Calendar

Didn't mention the real big one: new button in Calendar month view finally brings back the events at the bottom.

Behold... iOS is now customizable. LOL. That was a joke. Android FTW. Apple is too slow and the changes so minor.

where on earth did you read that iOS 7.1 was going to make a wide departure from its normal, clone-inspiring self?

also, if you hate it so much, why are you here reading about it? i cant imagine reading about things i hated, it would be a miserable life of anger & resentment. unless i was being forced to...is that it? is somebody forcing you to read about things you dont like? who is this person? how can we help you free yourself?

That new cancel button on the slide to power off, and the hangup button on phone calls is FAR too small and looks completely stupid.

Why make it harder to press? It's not like they're using the screen around it for something else!
Might have been made somewhat smaller to decrease accidental hangups or dials that perhaps some more people were experiencing with the much larger buttons in iOS 7.0. Primarily though it's likely to move even more toward a newer UI that is based on circles in one way or another when it comes to buttons and other elements (like contact photos).

Australian English update to Siri in 7.1 seems a regression in quality. Instead of sounding pretty good (7.0.6), she now sounds more robotic, similar to how Bishop in ALIENS sounded after he was sliced in two. That's a bummer.

Whats more amazing is that how fast the iPhone 5 is...watching that video no way did I feel that it was running any slower than a 5S...unless he sped up the video intentionally

Overall I like it. Especially that the old month view is back in the calendar. What I don't like however, is that the Bold Text option now makes some parts of the OS too bold, like the keyboard or the buttons at the bottom of Safari or phone app.

But I don't want to turn off Bold Text either, since I prefer it on the home screen, app icon names, weather app, phone key pad etc. Seems like they should offer options under Bold Text so you can customize where in the OS you want the bold text.

um, is that innovation?

Ok, I watched the IOS 7.1 changes vid and thought - what great material for a Second City TV or Saturday Night Live skit. Is it me or is Apple floundering?

Seems the only thing Tim Cook knows how to do is increase price point and profit margin. He’s diluted the brand by adding S to everything so that nobody wants to buy anything because in 3-6 months and ’S’ will be released that has all the features the original product should have had to begin with. I’m not going to harp on the Tim Cook bash but he’d do well to stop releasing stuff and innovate more often. It used to be that when MacWorld came up, we all braced ourselves for the many Apple innovations. Then, Tim Cook persuaded the profit mantra ideal and Apple broke from the structured (and nightmarish) massive release at MacWorld. I think a compromise between the two extremes would be prudent. Is it me or do other Apple fans feel that it seems like when Steve Jobs was fired from Apple and we’re just waiting for him to return?

Don’t get me wrong, I think Tim Cook brings a lot to the table. But more and more it seems Mr. Cook is bringing commercialism to the table: 1) iTunes has gotten so far from pleasing the user experience and headed towards commercialism and bribing the user into making a purchase, 2) the products tempt you with innovation but in reality they are programmed to make you spend $$$ every 6 months, 3) the innovations in apps force you to purchase from iTunes to share the sale with Apple, 4) Mac’s have almost ceased to exist in innovation because of their lower profit margin, 5) there’s been no design changes of any major degree since Job’s passing, 6) probably something I can’t think of

So, if you read this Tim Cook - we are NOT that dumb to foolishly spend $$ for a tiny bit of change over and over. That’s what Gates did with Windows :O

Yeahhhh, nooo! This was kind of a let down software release so I do believe I will be keeping my Jailbreak and staying on iOS 7.0.6 until iOS 8 which I don't think will be that amazing. I think Apple likes to do major software changes every other year as in iOS 5 was kick ass, iOS 6 was a minor tweak of iOS 5, and iOS 7 was a major change so I am thinking I will be on 7.0.6 for a while.

Well... 7.1 feels pretty major with speedup throughout the system. It feels solid compared to 7.0.x., which crashed more than I expected.

If you want to stay on 7.0.x for a while, you should just update to 7.1.

Why would they change the new voicemail dot from green to grey? Also- I need to call Jen Birkett back!

Just off the top of my head...

You probably forgot that iOS and Mac OSX are free. Not sure why you spend $$$ every 6 months.

You also forgot about Mac Pro "not innovating my *ss". ;-)
It is a major redesign of how computers can be made.

It seems that you do have a lot of things you didn't think of or remember.

The Cancel button looks like the Mavericks X in the middle of the wave wallpaper. Maybe they are coming to their senses and are going to cancel Mavericks! :)

Dog: Mavericks Pup: iOS7 I can't believe Apple made these things. Maybe they farmed some of the work out to Samsung.

Yes, yes... So slow that Android still haven't caught up to 64-bit.

And so customizable, with so many skins to imitate iOS7 UI until Apple complained.

And so many malware on Android disguised as innovation.

Nothing in there to shout about. Don't they have anything more interesting to announce? So much for new products coming "throughout 2014". We've had bugger all so far.

Nice video and you covered just about everything. The only thing I think you missed is some option I heard about to hide elements of Safari when viewing a web page. I haven't read too much about it though.

You might need to have the high quality (naturally sounding) voice to download first, which generally happens when the phone is on WiFi and plugged in, so probably in a day or two when you are in situations like that you'll get the high quality voice downloaded and it will start using that which will sound better.

Don't think anything new related to that exists in iOS 7.1.

You realize this was a minor point update? None of that would be expected or really even hoped from it. However, it did bring quite a bit of stability and performance improvements, which is what would be expected from it and what most people would actually find useful (over some "spiffy" new features).

Calendar in notification center

Didn't mention the real big one: new button in Calendar month view finally brings back the events at the bottom.

I complained many times to Apple about how inefficient the calendar's time blocks were in notification center. If you had one event at 9am, then an event at 6pm, it would only display dead space until you were within an hour or two of the 6pm event. It was soooo stupid. Now, it lists all your events for the day......It is so much better!!!!!

I haven't used iOS 7 (except on friends' devices) as I use an iPod touch 4th generation that doesn't support it. I'm not a huge fan from what I've seen. When Apple came out with the Mac, it was following others to an extent, but the friendliness of the OS design was Apple's own take on a GUI. OS X came out of nowhere with its Aqua design. iOS 7 just to me looks like an attempt to follow and keep up with the Web's move to more stark and modern looks.

I question whether all these tweaks are being added to accessibility rather than as general preferences as to not make an admission that generally people aren't happy with some of the UI. It seems like if you have to make so much of it customizable to make it palatable, you may have made a design mistake to begin with. There's certainly nothing that I see in that video that I envy or that I would particularly want in a phone if I were to ever buy a smartphone. In fact I think it looks a little dated and less elegant than iOS 6--sort of like the gimmicks you might find on old feature phones. Just my opinion.
