am i the only one who finds Launch Pad pretty pointless? You've got the dock for your most frequent apps, and then the apps folder as a stack in the dock for all the others? Does Launch Pad improve on this at all? I'm usually not a hater of new features, i'm always up for new stuff, but this one just strikes me as totally redundant.

Very nice video. I can't wait for Lion.

Yeah, I agree. I just use my apps folder in my dock, and have my most used apps in the dock as well. Perhaps is may be nice for those who don't like the dock and want an iOS experience out of it.

Launchpad is redundant in my opinion.. just click the applications folder! or use finder..

The thing i most like about my apple desktop is that its CLEAN not cluttered with shortcuts like windows...

Would like to see more GUI changes..

Re: LaunchPad

I think some UI designed for iPad's 9.7" touchscreen shouldnt be directly copied to Mac Computers with larger screen sizes up to 27" or more!

It's a waste of screen estate.

It will make a lot more sense when Apple releases their first TOUCH BASED MACS!

There are three songs in each of my videos, and if you read the description on YouTube, you see that they are just to keep the videos from being boringly silent. Since I didn't feel like recording my voice for them.

Thanks for the video. My sister has always wanted a Mac but never wanted the price. After watching the video, she is getting in line to become a switcher.

Installing

If i install LION, do i have to re-install everyting on my Mac? Or is LION an upgrade OS?

Everything seems to be resource-hogging glitz instead of making the os work better with ram and multiple cores and improving power and productivity in a computer.
... this one seems obsessed with largely useless glitz that most people won't even bother to use, or will find that their computers suffer a performance hit trying to keep up with the gimmicks.

+1
I don't need all this junk. When I get my new MacPro I'll have to downgrade to Snow Leopard because none of my graphics apps or peripherals will work with Lion.

Interesting video but the new UI bits look overly complex and unless I'm mistaken, spaces no longer supports a grid layout which is a major downgrade in terms of functionality.

You can also add me to the list of people that don't see the necessity of Launch Pad or of having full screen apps - with the possible exception of photo apps like iPhoto and Aperture that already have it.

Most of these new UI features also seem to require touch gestures and with my Magic Track pad gathering dust because it cluttered my desk, I can't see how any of this stuff will work well for non-laptop users.

I would have been more impressed if Apple had spent time on improving the built in software like Mail and Safari to bring them up to spec with competing software rather than all this UI eye candy.

Finally, please let's have some update on the security situation in Mac OS X Lion. Snow Leopard is a joke in the security industry and widely regarded as one of the least secure operating systems in use to day thanks to weak implementations of ASLR and DEP and a complete lack of sandboxing.

I agree

Apple has a long way to go. That was all embarrassingly complicated.

Thanks for making that video, however the tempo got a little crazy when taking it all in for the first time. I'm concerned that there might be too many changes in the user interface at the moment which will confuse newbies and the less nerdy Mac users. I might have been impressed by Spotlight the most the improvements make it a super app. I can see many people getting lost in the layers Apple is adding to the interface.

I hereby give someone permission to rehost my video(s) without the audio if they want. Just make sure to link to the original(s). :)

BTW, where are you located that Sony is cockblocking you? I could probably just remove the audio via YouTube (You'd think YT would just mute it for people out of jurisdiction anyway) but that's the part everyone likes. :(

I'm in Germany. For some reason many videos are blocked here that aren't blocked elsewhere. Almost always, I can watch those videos via hidemyass.com. Unfortunately, the quality (when played via hidemyass.com) sucks.

Launchpad with the dock makes the desktop look too cluttered.

I agree with you. I don't see Launchpad being that necessary. Quicksilver (Gnome-Do for me) is the preferred method of launching apps. It's clean and quick.

Agreed, launchpad for me is completely useless compared to Quicksilver.

I like less ***** taking up space on my laptop, not more.

I hide the dock as it is, I literally cannot remember the last time I clicked on an icon to launch an application with my mac. its your computer, you know what program you want to use, absolutely no chance lauchpad will be a simpler process for launching an application, as least for me, as I already feel the dock is useless.

That's where sensible defaults come in. Apple is usually good at this. The defaults are intuitive enough and provide a good balance for new users to adapt to the system while more advanced users can customize things to act like they want (though sometimes, there's a certain lack of options for things).

There wasn't anything overly complicated in that video, not anymore complicated than the current OS X anyhow.

Since we saw an Apple patent application for an iMac laying down type device, it is save to assume that OSX will morph into IOS as others posted already.

Probably with an option for keyboard input and some "really working" elements of voice control.

Adopting will take the usual pain to get used to and then the fine tuning will begin.

No need to complain, instead stay with Snow leopard until Lion is optimized
and in revision 5 or 6.

Currently IMO weak:

SAFARI - doesn't feel right vs. Firefox
App folder in dock not desirable, so hopefully Launcher will help
gray slider inside app folder almost invisible and too small
I Don't use stacks

Lately Apple logo designs (itunes, Thunderbolt etc. graphically weak

All in all things are starting to look cluttered.

Apple needs to work going back to simplicity.

Can we do things without restarting?

Plenty of work Apple.

Don't expect revolutionary OS from any manufacturer for now until we go to full voice control.

For now everything works with ease and whatever Apple doesn't offer is modified or taken care of by other developer apps.

This is done with many events and IMO silly. Who says you wouldn't buy the music yoiu listen to?

There are Firefox plugins to change headers which makes it look as if you are from another region. Google how this works.

I watch German sport events that way.

Agreed. None of this stuff looks at all intuitive and for a new user, I can see a lot of confusion on the horizon.

I'm just not impressed much by Lion. It seems like I'm losing some features, like Rosetta, for a bunch of iOS-related things that don't interest me (though I'm sure they interest other people, just like I'm pretty sure a lot of people don't use Rosetta much). I'll probably skip this kitty and hope for better features in the next one.

Of course it's still a work in progress, so it could get some amazing changes between now and release, and if it does I'll eat my words and buy it :)

I actually disagree. Rosetta means I don't have to pay a fortune to replace some legacy apps. Lose Rosetta means Lion is not viable. Lets face it, it really wouldn't take much to incorporate Rosetta.

Disappointing if Rosetta is not going to be supported.

As a side note, will Exchange 2003 be supported in Lion?

Wow what's with the dramatic music? I keep waiting for someone to come out and knife me!

The features look interesting. What are the minimum requirements to make all those features work? 16gb ram? Hexacore processor?

I hope this thing isn't slow....! Maybe it will be, and then they will make Snow Lion 8 months later....!

I'm just going to have small partition for booting into with 10.6 for all my legacy apps when needed. Not a perfect solution but better than losing them all.

From what I've seen & understand Spaces & Expose has been integrated into Mission Control which looks much more efficient overall. Or am I missing something?

The gestures aren't completely in place, Spaces don't remember app positions, etc. Apple screwed up nothing. They just have to iron out the issues before release.

I know ASLR will get proper implementation in Lion, also there's some kind of sandboxing for apps, so both these things you're mentioning is getting attention.

What I'm curios about GUI wise is the hiding scroll bars. Can that be turned off? What if I at a glance want to see where I'm standing in a document – do I have to scroll to do that?

Also I'm wondering about the ”resize window from all edges” feature.
One thing I find annoying in Windows with this when I quickly want to move a window and manages to hit the area of the upper part of a window which makes the OS think I want to resize the window instead of moving it. How does this behave in Lion?

Just throwing this out there, an iOS desktop (iOS X?) would be nice. like instead of a traditional PC with mouse setup, maybe a 20 inch tablet that is propped up on a desk and runs iOS but with app/window functionality would be really cool..
;)
