My 2 cents
As an avid billiards fan, I have been waiting for a decent pool app to come around at a reasonable price, and now that Virtual Pool's price has gone down dramatically, I think it is totally a must buy for iPhone owners. With a little marketing, this application could be the next huge hit on the App store.
This application, a remake of the best selling pool game for PC's back in 1998, brings back a lot of the traditional gameplay, with some great iPhone established controls. It plays smooth, and with a little practice, the use of English feels natural. The English and pool playing is a little dramatic, like most applications, but really this is just a gravity engine issue since the dawn of time, and not something that is easily dealt with. That being said, the ability to really finely adjust your shots makes this app set apart from the rest. Furthermore, the overhead view point lets you get a clear look at your aim, in case the standard "at the table" view is too close to see where your next shot should be. To actually shoot can be a little challange, as the cue stick is on the bottom half of the phone and you find your finger slipping off sometimes, and when you "flick" forward to actually make contact with the cue ball, it may go faster or slower than you expected. The learning curve is low however, and isn't that difficult to understand. The difficulty however comes when you have to compensate for English. I am not really sure how this could be improved, so I think its something I'll gladly get used to.
The graphics are very retro looking, but you can expect that as the franchise just made a port to the phone. The balls and cue do look nice, and the table looks decent, but the game itself seems a little "cheap". But really when you play the game all of that is put in the back of your mind as you are trying to play your opponent.
The AI is very well spread. You have the easy players who will take some time to think and let you have a few games, and you have the near impossible that will not let you drop a rack unless you break and run. It may prove to be a daunting challenge to beat the final boss, even in a quickplay game mode, but you'll enjoy the AI for the most part.
There are 6 games to choose from: 6, 8, 9, and 10 ball, along with straight pool (point game) and rotation (another point game). These games can be played via a career mode or a quickplay mode (as mentioned above). The career mode immerses you against many computer players, each allowing you to "bet" a certain amount of money you gain by beating other players. As you progress, you do see a spike in difficulty. The replay value is tremendous and allows for a great gaming experience if you have time to drop a rack or two. There are also difficulty settings to really set the bar high!
The developer (above) claims he will add multiplayer, and then this game will surely be a best seller. It already is a fantastic app at a great low price, so do not miss this one!
PS -- I put this review in the app store. I really am rooting for this app to do well and continue to get the support it gets right now.
