I'm just saying the biggest isn't always the best. They're always is going to be some little skunk-works team out there that comes up with something fantastic. The original Mac was a skunk-works project in the shadow of the Apple II.

Of course. Vivo sells more than 50 million phones a year though. Context matters.

Vivo is one of the top 4 chinese phone manufacturers (along with Oppo and Huawei), they sold more than 75 million devices last year. Not 70 million in one quarter, but I would still consider ~20 million to be a large scale production.

They won't need to make anywhere near 75 million screen-embedded fingerprint readers. VIVO is known for low cost Android headsets for sale in markets like China and India where low cost is the major determining feature. Most of VIVO's models don't even have a fingerprint reader at all. I wouldn't expect a top tier feature like a screen-embedded fingerprint reader to suddenly be on all of their models.

Kudos to VIVO if I'm wrong, but I'm just not seeing it happening.

Chances are note 8 may beat Apple to it as well. Hopefully Apple have got this right

There's no wrong or right. They only offer one phone, basically. You get what you get and you don't question it. That's how you roll with apple. It's good and bad. If apple had four phones to offer no ONE phone would have it all and you still would wonder 'what if'.

Well, no one force you buy and they are even remotely concern about your sale.

So they don't give a **** about how westerners think. You are not their sales target.

You can buy your precious iPhone while I will certainly buy this.

Yet Samsung made much better phone than Apple, as far as right now.

Apple is done, it is now selling overpriced junks.
S8 is a good phone (except for fingerprint reader on back). Too bad it took them a decade of copying to finally get there.

Vivo+oppo+oneplus = same company different branding.

Combined they are bigger than apple in world wide market share.

Oppo - mid range
One plus- high end
Vivo - all

The context of the conversation is not total market share, it is speculation about the yield necessary for embedded screen fingerprint readers to meet demand. If most of what a company sells is low priced handsets, then most of that market share won't get that new fingerprint reader.

Most models now don't even have a basic fingerprint reader, whereas 100% of Apple's models do.

Apple is a testament to the "getting it right is more important than getting there first" mantra. Neither the Apple II, the Mac, the iPod, the iPhone nor the iPad were first to market in their product categories. I hope all the competition is focused on getting it right because that's best for all consumers in the long run.

That's not quite correct. All recent models have fps. I think your misconception about "low" price handset. Yes, compared to a way overpriced Iphone then vivo pricing is "low". But if you look at entire hardware +software package dont be surprised those vivo handsets can match or exceed Iphone (except the cpu) at half the price. Placing a screen fps may add cost but these chinese manufacturers can do it because they are willing to go with 5% profit margin instead of apple's 40% margin. That's why in most parts of asia, they are walloping apple big time in sales.

What nonsense, company X does a feature so in your mind that means Apple is doing it?

Perhaps not the "exact" same thing always, but it explains why Apple is doing a variant but only after company X does it...... Apple usually does it "better", then company X anyway, which is why they take time, then company Y follows up with a "better" solution.

Not in the space race to the Moon

I don't think anyone will get to the moon, but SpaceX

Records your print, then sends it to the Parties Central Database. :apple:
Yup. I suspect this the most. And judging by a few recent regulations against live platform, Party will surely put a hand on such extremely easy way to collect identity data.

Some Chinese just cannot he trusted, no matter what.
Sorry Vivo, but in the true tradition of Chinese companies, you've done a "Ferengi" and copied Apple. I'll never buy a Vivo, whatever you put in it.
Well, I would worry they send my data to China rather than worrying they are copying Apple.

What makes you think this is a rush to market? It's not like the idea for under screen fp tech came from Apple. It's also not like Vivo/Oppo (they're the same company) don't have a reputation for introducing new features before other companies.

Of course the idea did not come from Apple. But who gives a flying monkey! The truth of the matter is, only when there is a rumor of Apple doing something new, all these other companies try to get in the game, and not just get in the game but dying the be the first. Like being first means fck all! We all know what happen when someone focuses to be first rather then best.

First means nothing. Best means everything.

First means quite a lot when you're opening up new technological capabilities.

If this proves true, it'll put a lot more pressure on Apple to deliver in screen fingerprint recognition rather than the ridiculous sensor on the back approach.

I'm in the camp that would prefer Apple to delay the next iPhone if necessary to get this right.

This breakthrough would help encourage Apple to deliver the goods.

What's so ridiculous about sensor at the back? Once you get over the mental block, it is a much better position than front. Even with the off-center S8 fps, I can unlock faster using single hand than one located in the front since I dont need to twist my thumb to reach the fps or need to use both hands.

Congratulations man !!
You're probably a unique sample 1 out of 10 million, and qualified for a free upside down charging Mighty Mouse ...
(oh no, it's Apple)

which is Apple's fav game. and why I won't be shocked if they don't announce something like this with the iphone 2017. it might be in the 8 cause that's next year. after a few months of seeing if it even works well with the Vivo phones. if it gets reviewed as a dud they can drop it and no one will be the wiser cause they never officially said they were doing it thus its not delayed or cancelled

often all it means is bragging rights. like those idiots who run to a board thread to post any inane comment so they can claim they posted first. sometimes to the point of literally just saying "first"

Maybe you should try one first before you jest. I used to think fps at back is ridiculous too but not anymore.
