I have to say I am loving (here and elsewhere) the attempts at justification

- "you should buy a new phone" (to get dual SIM)
- "you should swap SIM cards" (so making Whatsapp useless)
- "you shouldn't use your phone so much on holiday" (because people only ever go to Europe to sit by a pool and do literally nothing else)
- "it's only £x on top of the cost of your holiday" (see above)
- "just change supplier" (to an inferior network)
- "x offer free roaming" (so far)
- "UK government should legislate" (which won't help with the operators costs one bit)
- "I hope we're charging EU visitors the same"

Speak for everybody why don’t you. I love Europe and voted remain BUT I can also understand why some voted leave. The never ending boat loads of poor, suffering young men with Nike trainers coming over (zzzzzz). The problem was that the first European country they landed in should have taken them and/or put a stop to it. They didn’t. They let them pass and pass and pass until they came to the UK. It is still happening now despite being out of Europe.
That's not true, and is probably one of the reasons some people decided to vote Leave.

From the article: "Under the UN Refugee Convention, there is no obligation on refugees to do this—an interpretation which is upheld in UK case law. Those trying to cross the Channel can legitimately claim asylum in the UK if they reach it."

As soon as the operators stated they had no plans to reintroduce roaming charges after Brexit you just knew several of them had a clock ticking down to the point where they suddenly would have plans...

It's clear that this is just a money grab from them and no doubt it will slowly increase over the next few years. Only £2/day now but I bet it gets up to £3-£4/day by the mid 2020s.

Thankfully I'm on Three and I can see them retaining free EU roaming (alongside the other countries they offer). Their coverage and speed isn't great, but I believe they've bought up more 5G spectrum that the others, so I'm hoping they get a bit better on that soon as we move to 5G.
Didn't Three cut their roaming fair usage policy recently so you only get to use a maximum of 12GB and month (9GB for pay as you go) before you get charged £3 per GB?

To be honest it's the people in Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland border I feel sorry for as they could be hit by roaming charges is they inadvertently connect to a cell tower over the boarder.

Should have watched Planet of the Apes, just once. Just like any business in the world the more people/money the more global say, importance and strength. Now the UK is gonna loose Scotland rather soon (I predict) which leaves them even more alone. Good luck, you're gonna need it.

We will welcome to Scottish with open arms :)

Too bad they will have to pay roaming charges when calling England.

I'll just use a EU sim when visiting the EU, a US sim when visiting the US, and an English sim when visiting England. It isn't even remotely an issue to use a country specific sim. Even town to down you may find one provider has better coverage than the other when going to some places. And of course, you can leave your phone at home when traveling abroad. If I am visiting England I hardly need to have a smartphone with me and the same goes if I am having a wee holiday in France.

plenty of other countries were doing exactly that. Was kind of the point.
Can you document this statement ? Norway, Iceland and Swiss, they are all paying the same amount to the EU budget but they don't have any power in the EU parliament, as they are not members.

Not always that simple. In Germany buying a local SIM card (prepaid) requires a ID check now which you either have to do at a post office or via a Videocall with App XY. Of course the instructions are only in German too
Around here it's the same.

It's quite bothersome and nothing like those "burner phones" you always see on TV.

Still we do offer English instructions :D.

Unpleasant, but inevitable, IMO. After all, these telcom companies are private, so will always want to maximise their profits and unregulated roaming charges can bring in quite a lot.

And how is this an improvement in any way over the previous situation where you just didn’t have to worry about it at all?

I was referencing net benefit of the eu budget. Contributions vs benefits.

There are newer members and older members, and if you are not European you don't understand the trauma of the world war 2/cold war on the continent and the need to integrate economically and socially the east flank. It's more than Trumpian transactional talk.

I think it’s understandable that they put back roaming charges to citizens outside the EU space. It’s their platform.

In fact I think they should charge on top 30% of App Store sales and digital services in general considering it’s their network that it’s being used to transport and eventually deliver the digital merchandise.

You do realise my parents were playing in bombed out houses growing up. The trauma isn’t limited to the east, now I’m not here to debate the pros and cons of empire but the loss of it brought on by WW2 severely damaged industry in many areas of the UK. Granted London is very prosperous but plenty of areas aren’t why should people living under the breadline care about the Eastern Europe?

I was pretty neutral on the EU but the idea it’s some kind of utopia is laughable.

Not so easy at the moment with having to have passenger locator forms and showing QR codes at check in and customs to enter countries. Not everyone wants to take a laptop with them and run around looking for a printer to print out entry forms, vaccine status and PCR test results, which some forms need to be completed when abroad.

This was to be expected, it's pure profiteering by Vodafone, you actually use their own network across the EU so to them it literally costs nothing for you to use roaming. It's nothing to do with Brexit, apart from that being used as an excuse, and everything to do with profiteering.
The mobile operator companies made everyone pay for roaming charges till the EU brought in regulation to stop it. And then they just moved the cost into other things.
