This isn't really a "loophole"... You're not gaining much. You're spending an additional $240 ($10/month for 2 years) for something you most likely won't even be using.

I'd advise everyone to look into their data usage history. I bet most of you don't exceed 2 GB, or possibly even 1 GB, just during regular usage. Which means you can switch to a 2 GB data plan (which is the same price as your old unlimited plan) and still buy the iPhone 5 at the subsidized price. That's what I'll be doing after finding out that out of the 3 smartphones on our family plan, the most data that any of us has used individually was about 750 MB in a single month.

I'd still prefer the peace of mind that comes with unlimited, not having to worry about "watching" your data usage, but apparently it's not even something I should be worried about to begin with...

From what I was told you can't purchase an LTE device as a sub and keep your unlimited plan. Once you purchase that you have to go into the share everything plans.

You can't keep your unlimited plan if you want the subsidized price, that is correct. But you can switch to a different data plan, such as the 2 GB data plan for each line on a family plan, and that's fine. Or you can switch to a shared data plan, of course, but it's not required that you go with the shared plan.

The only ways to keep unlimited data are to obtain the phone using someone else's upgrade (like another line on your account), or buy the phone at full retail price. No exceptions.

At least that's according to the 3 different Verizon reps I've talked to yesterday and today (been trying to haggle my way into keeping unlimited, heh).

Does anyone know how long the phone needs to be activated on someone else's account before you activate it onto yours to keep your Unlimited Data?

A friend is using his brother-in-law's upgrade (separate accounts) and we've been told that they could activate/deactivate it on his brother's account and then activate it on his Unlimited Data account, but one rep said that it would have to be activated on his brother in law's account for 14 days.

Anyone have any experience or ideas on this?

Here's my situation:

Nationwide 450 plan $45, unlimited text $10, unlimited data $30.

It's a single line plan. I use between 1.5 and 1.75 GB's now and also have an iPad 2 with a 30 dollar 3GB plan.

with my discount I pay 96 dollars a month.

1. Can I add a line to my plan and use it's subsidy then do the switch and keep the 10 phone in a drawer someplace?

2. Should I just get a share everything plan for the phone and ipad which would be $40 for the phone, $10 for the ipad and $80 for 6GB of data. It would work out with the 22% discount to 101 dollars a month for 1GB more data then I have now and I'd be shocked if I actually go over 6GB combined between the two!

does that mean if I have line A and B:

line A: unlimited data iPhone 4s
line B: unlimited data iPhone 4s

Can I use line A's upgraded iPhone 5 and activate on line B; line B's iPhone 5 on line A?

Umm yes it will work. I've already done this exact thing except it was with the droid razr Maxx, and it worked. I still have my unlimited.

yes im aware. i was corrected awhile back.

NO. The point is to NOT upgrade to iPhone 5 on your existing unlimited data plan.. that's why the dumb phone line is a pre-requisite for this to work. (and provided that the user on the dumb phone line doesn't mind a 2 year renewal)

No. Only one of them.

For example, if you use line A's upgrade on line B, then line A must now be put on a new data plan in order to complete the upgrade - i.e. you lose your unlimited data when you upgrade. No exceptions. There is no way to keep it.

OK, how about this one.

Two line family plan
1 dumb phone - out of contract, month to month
1 smart phone - unlimited data, out of contract, month to month.
Both phones show eligible for upgrade.

I just want to get one iPhone 5 right now. How can I get it as the subsidized price?

I don't see an option on the website to transfer an upgrade, they both already have upgrades.

Do I have to call to do it? I was hoping to order via Apple.

Should I do something fancier, like get the iPhone on a new dumb phone line of service, then cancel my old dump phone line and activate the iPhone on my unlimited data smart phone line? If I do that, do I have to get a phone for the new dumb phone line of service?

Thanks

it's simple bro.

you can order online via apple but make sure you order for the dumb phone line.

once you PHYSICALLY get the iPhone 5 come Sept 21, CALL Verizon and ask them to activate it on YOUR EXISTING unlimited data line. Then have them cancel the residual 2GB plan that came with the iP5 on the dumb phone line.

in essence you're the perfect candidate to get this to work on your current setup plan.

if BY CHANCE you get iP5 and the nano sim it comes with is tied to the original dumb phone line, go to the verizon store and ask them for a free nano sim card. they will give it to you.

OK, thanks! Now I need to debate if I should add a dummy line and save $200 over the course of the contract with some risk of losing unlimited 4g, or buy a locked Verizon iPhone full price...

Do anyone know if I will lose unlimited data if I add corporate discount for my personal lines? TIA.

Ok so here is my situation:

Primary Line: dumb phone (upgrade available in Feb.)
Secondary Line (my line): smartphone (upgrade available now) unlimited data

Can i transfer my upgrade to PL, purchase the iP5 on that line, then transfer the iP5 back to the SL and cancel the 2gb data for the dumb phone in order to maintain my unlimited data and not have to buy the phone outright?

This is what I have and what I plan on doing:

All phones are off contract
Thunderbolt (Mine): Unlimited Data
Bionic (Wife's): 4GB
Razr (Dad's): 4GB

My dad could care less what phone he has, so I will use his upgrade to get the iP5.

My question is: Should I buy it from Apple or through Verizon? I am looking for the easiest way to get the phone from my father's line to mine.

Thank you in advance for your help. Keep posting, it is keeping me awake!

I've got the exact same plan and situation. Curious to see what others think about this!

From following the thread I don't think you can do that. Once you transfer the upgrade from SL to PL your SL contract will get renewed and you will lose your unlimited data on SL. You can not get any more upgrades from SL if you want to keep unlimited data. The only ways you can do it is wait until Feb. Get iP5 from PL and activate it on SL to get unlimited 4G, or add a dummy line as many have suggested.

ok so what if i dont preorder it and just walk into a store on the 21st and buy it. will i still lose unlimited

If you buy it subsidized using SL's upgrade you will lose unlimited. If you pay full price $650 And let Verizon know (it's unsubsidized) when you activate it you will keep unlimited data. If you still confused just go through the thread, that'd help you.

The discount only applies to the base $70's, not the additional $40 for smartphone/$10 for tablets. So they are not only increasing the price of the plans, they are further limiting the impact of corporate discounts.

Just ordered and verified way to keep unlimited

I just added a new line and pre-ordered the Iphone 5. I set it up as an individual plan as there was only that option or the share everything - not sure it matters which one is selected. I then called Verizon and verified that once I get the phone, I can take it in to Verizon get that phone switched to my unlimited line and move a dumb phone to the new line at $10 per month.

Can you please go into a little more detail on this. What plan did you have, did you do all of this on the website.

Question, why stay with Verizon if they won't subsidize? I think you can get a cheaper plan with some little local company if you don't want to be on contract.

Also, do you realize this means that Verizon isn't signing a contract with you which sounds great at first, except it also means VErizon at any time can just stop offering you the unlimited plan period cause they have no contract with you to keep it until the contract runs out?

In my case, my unlimited data contract is in effect until May of 2013, so i am good till then. If they do decide to end my unlimited after the contract runs out, than I will just sign a new contract in order to get a subsidized phone, sell it and use that to recoup part of what i am going to spend on the non-subsidized iPH5.

It is jumping through a few hoops, but I think on LTE I need to try and keep my unlimited.
