Would that necessitate a dGPU? Would the Iris be able to handle the retina and 4K at the same time while doing graphically-taxing tasks?

But what pipe is going to carry all those pixels out to the 4K display? It's my understanding that current Thunderbolt doesn't have enough bandwidth.

Just checked again, order status is back up & the order status is still processing items. Clearly if Apple's to make its "delivers by" deadline they would have to ship like now... The only thing I can think of is there is a shortage of 256GB SSD modules. Otherwise, they've got to be updating the MacBook Pro retinas soon.

But then on further thought...

I'm getting a classic MacBook Pro with this order & it doesn't have a 256GB SSD so it would have shipped already. Then it would say, "Partially shipped" in this event. More food for thought.

Doesn't Apple use two manufacturers (Samsung and Sandisk) for the 256 GB SSD?

TB1 could do it, but not in Apple fashion (e.g. A hack using display port 1.2 extensions). Plus, wouldn't be able to daisy chain devices. Assuming a TB2 Cinema Display is about to be released, I'm thinking they will hold up the MBP release unless they just want to put something out in the interim. Better have TB2, if we have to wait until October.

If they were to update the MBP's, do they just send out the new versions in place of ones people have previously ordered without notification? Curious. Hope next week sees the refresh, desperately craving it now!

Couldn't you push the 4K over HDMI? But then again, I doubt an Apple monitor would have an HDMI input.

The other problem is that I don't believe TB2 is supposed to be ramped up/widely available until next year, so I'd be surprised if that's the holdup for the rMBP. Besides, I think that holding the rMBP for TB2 is doing customers less of a favor than releasing a TB1 Haswell version.

I might just be being selfish though, since I don't plan on using an external monitor. (On the flip side, TB2 would be nice because I plan on keeping this machine for 4-5 years and if I do end up using an external monitor you can bet I will want it to be 4K. But it's not a deal-breaker and my current laptop is struggling, so for me the sooner the Haswell machines are released, the better.)

It seems more that they were forced to shut it down (for more than three days already) - "maintenance" for the dev center has never lasted this long. Guessing that major issues are at fault - e.g. huge data loss or security problems.

Security problems...

I'm in 100% agreement with you!!! I myself have no real interest in 4K, I may use an external monitor at some point, but have no interest of spending that much money on a monitor. I'm sure there are some people with specific professional needs that would benefit from 4K external monitors, but don't believe it should hold haswell release up. There will be many more MBP releases before 4K monitors become the main stream.

Is the Developer Portal still down?

Dev Portal was down due to an intruder and security risk. Not sure it is related to the down time at the store.

Received this email from Apple just minutes ago.

Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then.

In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.

Edit:
You know I'm getting rather sick of waiting for the Haswell rMBP :p
the anticipation is killing me.

Wow.... I clicked see more stores on the online store and saw that every Apple Retail Store says "Ship to Store"

Maybe true, maybe not.

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro show that. The MacBook Air can't be out of stock so it could be a glitch.

just went in the page, based price for 15 inch 2.7 used to be $2799, now reflects $2599?:eek::eek::eek:

What are you guys talking about? You are confusing a lot of desperate people here. The price you are talking about $2599 is probably the price in the Education store that you are probably in right now.
