Today is the day or we will wait another month or two?

Why do I do this to myself? I should have purchased a laptop back in February but got suckered into thinking the next great thing is only weeks away. Almost 6 months later and here I am knowingly trying to believe the hype that it's any day now. In the meantime, I have a laptop being held together by butterfly clips(very true) and needs to be restarted several times a day - especially if I make the mistake of watching any video clip.

Come on, apple. Release the damned rMBP. It's too late to buy a current model.

Did anyone see the Digital Storm 13 haswell notebook?

Absurd. Quadcore and Nvidia 765m in a fat package. With the thermals of Haswell, I wish for dGPU and QuadCore in a 13 Retina MBP. I feel it can be done. Perhaps not a very high clockspeed, but it should be possible. I just think the 15 is too big, and the 13 air is to weak. I want the 13 Retina to be the portable power vacuum spot.

To everyone waiting excitedly for the earnings call: As far as I know Apple hasn't ever announced updates or new products during the call. The updates that coincide with earnings calls usually happen the day after.

Edit: As The_Samurai points out below they have also sometimes released new products on the day of the call, but only after the call is complete.

I'm inclined to believe that they will be having a huge event somewhere in september, releasing the mbps, the mp, the ipads and the ipods/iphone(s). ...
Besides, there are a couple of reasons why releasing the mbps in september seems reasonable:
...
-Mavericks
...

I think that's the reason for the delay right there: they're holding back the new models until Mavericks is ready (just like the mid-2011 Mac minis and MBA were held back for Lion).

The benchmarks we've seen for the new rMBPs have all had a custom build of Mavericks. Further, it does not make sense to develop a whole new build of Mountain Lion in tandem with a custom build of Mavericks.

As such, you won't see Haswell MBPs until Mavericks is available for sale.

What an ugly machine, but what great specs! I wish Apple would put those in the 15" rMBP, even though it only has an HD4600 (which is still way faster than the current HD4000).

Since the rMBP seems to be getting the Iris Pro CPU I fear we won't get an announcement today / tomorrow, because I don't know of any already released laptops with Iris Pro (please prove me wrong).

Wrong.

A totally new form factor iMac 21.5" and 27", alongside the introduction of the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad happened right after a conference call in late 2009. There was no mention in the earnings call itself, the store was down and when it came back... lo and behold, entire new iMac range as well as new accessories.

Well, I did say usually :D That's one I had forgotten about though.

The basic idea is that Apple doesn't use the earnings call as a sort of pseudo-event for new products. Rather they don't want to release new products in the weeks right before an earnings call, so they tend to pile up for release immediately after.

but isn't that the earnings call itself is not intended for consumers? so why would they use it to refresh consumer products?

sometimes i do wonder about the connection between those two.

anyway, so ... 2009 -> 2011 -> ???? :D is there such thing as a pattern?

No worries! I'll wait till tomorrow :D Even until Sept/Oct... Two weeks before previous WWDC I get Air 13" 2011 and of course after two weeks the new model (2012) was released. I'm pissed off since then! I'll try never to do that mistake again. I can wait 1-2 days or months but I'll be happy next couple of years..

Yes, they did indeed, but don't confuse external marketing efforts with marketing needs. To consumers, this thing looks pretty outdated right now, and that's even more true as other manufacturers release their Haswell models. Especially if tomorrow's call shows Mac sales numbers that are roughly in line with the projections that came out today, there's a really big problem in Mac sales. Apple can't really afford to wait.

john is spot on. When a consumer is looking for a laptop for school, business etc - they generally are looking for most bang for buck, stability/quality, and longevity. With most of apple's business competitors having already released Haswell based laptops (or soon to be released like Lenovo T series) - waiting to release an update based on Haswell alone is a sales problem. Yes all these other upgrades are nice - but the reality is - for a business consumer who uses their laptop on the go alot - the current macbook pros are solid and haswell will add a huge benefit of battery life alone.

the rest of the upgrades will be nice - but certainly could wait until first quarter next year. Get Haswell out NOW when customers will benefit alot from that battery life.

That is not necessarily the primary reason at all. Last year the mbps had been released before ML was, and all the customers were merely entitled to a free upgrade. However it does make sense for Apple to wait given all the other parts of the equation that I have listed.

at this point, after reading this whole thread, i think it would be stupid for them to wait. Why would they wait for mavs? Why would they wait for TB2? Mavs is a free upgrade if you bought your mac within a month of its release. TB2 has no peripherals. They aren't going to introduce a laptop with tb2 and nothing to utilize it. If i was in charge, to get the most money from the consumers, I would release a Haswell chip now with 802 ac. Then in 160 days from now, release one with the ssd improvements and tb2. Then make the claims that this laptop is so much better because its running mavs and all the numbers juiced. this seems to be apples model. thats how they release iphones

That's what I'm trying to say. They don't use the earnings call itself for product announcements. They just don't want to launch new product updates in the 2-3 weeks before the earnings call (because of the SEC Quiet Period), so there is sometimes a backlog of new products that get announced afterwards.

I'm on the fence about whether they're waiting for Mavericks or not. However, I'm pretty sure TB2 is not part of the equation. It's not going to be ramped up until 2014 and it will require updated Haswell processors. I would be surprised if Intel updates its processors so soon after the last generation (esp since Broadwell is apparently pushed back to 2015 now).

Product announcements are for consumers, investors and developers at all times. In the case of the earnings call, if Apple is displaying lower numbers, a new updated product could instill greater faith in the investors money.

They were released at WWDC if memory serves, and had their own custom build of Lion 10.7.4, before moving to the general build of Mountain Lion (there was a subsequent custom build of 10.8.2 to fix a glitch for MacBook and mini users, but this was not related).

The fact that the new MBPs have been popping up with a custom build of Mavericks suggests that they are unlikely to be bothering with doing two custom builds (ML and Mavericks). Hence, there will be no updated MBPs until Mavericks arrives.
