Thinking on this wish-list is they release MacBook Pro and Mac Pro side-by-side. Brother-and-Sister which brings in the MBPr casing to match MP, perfect time for minor tweaks for moving from 16:10 to 16:9 for IGZO display, matching TB2 ports, maybe even a TB2 Cinema Display with matching casing; 4K version to come latter... That would be an event.....

Yeah, a black 17'' MBP. That would be nice. Although I wouldn't want 16:9 resolutions on laptop screens.

A black rMBP would be awesome, but I would be concerned about the long-term reliability of the coating or whatever they do to get the color.

2.7ghz February 2013 16gb RAM 512gb flash.
I'm looking at exactly the same machine, and with Haswell not appearing and the early 2013 machines having a replaceable SSD, I'm having a hard time justifying waiting any longer.

802.11 ac would be nice, but I already have a strong n connection via a last-gen AP Extreme, and I don't need a range increase.

PCIe SSD is "better," but I'm guessing I won't notice the difference over the early 2013.

Longer battery life is always a plus, but how much is "enough"? From what I've read, the early 2013 life is at least as good as my current MBP's, and I'm on the AC adapter a lot of the time anyway.

The increase in processor power over the current 2.7GHz i7 is incremental.

There's no reason to believe the Retina display will be any different on the Haswell.

I doubt I could ever saturate a TB 1 port, let alone a TB 2 port.

As I want this machine to last at least as long as my current MBP (>5 yrs), it strikes me that the ability to upgrade to a 1TB SSD in the future is a plus over the Haswell machine.

I qualify for the Education discount, so I get the $100 App store card while the BTS promotion is on.

I can always return the early 2013 machine in 14 days.

So:

Anything I'm missing, folks, before I stop by the Store tonight?

My last Macbook was a 13" Pro Mid 2010, hoping for a bit of a jump :)
I'm on a 2.4GHz C2D, late '08 MBP. The early 2013 scores seem more than 3x higher -- I'm hoping to see more than a mere jump. :D

I got the 15" 2.6GHz refurbished. It has 16 GB RAM and 512 GB HDD. It was only $2189 so i figured I should grab it before they run out of that configuration. I'm really looking forward to playing around with it, being as my last laptop was a MBP from 2008.

When I got my 15" 2.7GHz 16GB RAM 512 GB SSD rMBP a year ago it was for quite a bit more than you paid  I paid the early adopter rate ;) Great deal. It's going to blow your 2008 MBP away.

Might deal with doing some gis grad work on my 08 penryn until the new ones come out. Start school late August. My 64gb jump drive will be my best friend haha.

How do you know that the Haswell rMBP won't have a replacable SSD? :)

Good question. I don't.

But the move to non-removable SSDs on the Haswell Airs gives pretty good reason to suspect a similar shift is coming with the Haswell MPB, given that the Haswell MBP internals will be being re-designed. I can't imagine that if the Airs and the Mac Pro are getting PCIe SSDs, the MBP's won't. That has me expecting a non-removable MBP SSD.

Any other thoughts, folks?

Even with the older SSDs, OWC was the only company offering replaceable SSDs for the current Macs.

It definitely makes more sense to buy the storage upfront that you need, as it seems like it costs more to upgrade it yourself later on. I can definitely see non-removable SSDs in the near future.

The SSD on the Haswell Airs is perfectly removable. Finding aftermarket replacements could be difficult however.

Looking at the iFixit teardown, I was actually surprised to see that the batteries are not glued to the bottom, like in the rMBP.

Thanks for the correction! I understood otherwise.

Well, that's one less point for the current rMBP.

Any other comments?

The new airs have replaceable PCIe SSD's, do they not? I would think that the same technology would be used in the new rMBP's...

Edit:
I see thundersteele beat me to it. Now it's doubly true :)

This is interesting. Apple just released their earnings for the last quarter and this report from the manufacterers says they will ship q3, my moneys on sept 10, a tuesday, 3 days after BTS ends on sept 6.

So what really happens is that I (and a lot of other students) am forced to buy off the old macbook pro lineup 5 days before the new ones come out...:mad:

I just graduated from college and if its that close for you then I would definitely wait. The first week or two of classes aren't likely going to have anything major and even then there's the library... Especially if its only a matter of days. I would definitely wait and not buy until you absolutely have to.

If it is really just 5 days, you will be covered under the 14 days return period from Apple, so don't worry !

man the refurb store is stocked right now with 15" models, makes it hard to wait! but September really isnt that far away...

i was looking to snag this one.... for $1,599 thats a steal, but i don't need it right away..

I guess that means we will rally this thread up again on;

September 10th

3rd time lucky?

Sounds like a good date to me! Should be hearing a whole lot of rumblings by this time with iPhone, iPad, and other products due to launch in the upcoming months, who knows maybe (and just maybe) that analyst Kuo turns out to be right!

I just really can't see them releasing the iPhones on two separate dates, which makes me question the rest of her analysis. It seems like it would confuse the average consumer making them think the cheaper one is just the new iphone. And since apple is so secretive it's not like they're going say the regular one will be released later. Just seems odd to me.

I am working very hard to talk myself out of that same one. I don't need it at all... I have the 13". But goddamn that's a great deal.

Is the only difference between the 2012 and 2013 rMBP the 0.1 GHz clockspeed? Nothing changed on the inside or anything?

I found I deal on craigslist for a retina macbook pro 15" for 1000 dollars. Is this too good to be true?

it has 2.6 ghz intel i7, 8 gb ram, 512 gb ssd hard drive. it is a 2012 model.

I really need a laptop for college which is starting soon, should I pull the trigger and get this laptop, or wait for haswell whenever that should be

It would be too good to be true even for the base model. With those specs, there's absolutely no way.

As far as I know, that was the only change.

Sorry, but that's incorrect. There was some improvements/changes to the innards, although nothing I would worry about that much.
