iPad motherboard cost isn't that much, rMBP is wayyyyyy more expensive.

But surely RAM fails and that is soldered in to those expensive motherboards?
Not to mention the failing GPU on some models. :)

the connectors on the Apple SSD may be proprietary, i don't know how OWC got their parts ... but it seems like its from the same supplier as apple.

for Micron to jump into manufacturing rMBP SSD, they have to consider whether people would want to upgrade their SSDs or not.

Crucial/Micro get a lot of Mac customers and they already make mSATA and NGFF format flash storage.
http://www.crucial.com/store/ProductMarketing_m500.aspx

Perhaps not unreasonable to imagine that Crucial M.2 (NGFF format) SSD, or a modified design, might have potential for use in the rMBP.

I'm not sure if the connector is the same as the one used by apple?

ADATA also have an NGFF SSD:
http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/5...ormance-preview-and-the-ngff-story/index.html

personally i'm not inclined to upgrade my SSD once i bought the rMBP even though i can, because the old SSD would have little to no resale value, and to make it as an external HDD is just ...... ridiculous

Perhaps if there were reasonable priced 480GB and 960GB (crucial) or 1TB options (upcoming samsung 840 evo), more people would.

However I don't see it happening for the 15" rMBP in this upcoming late 2013 release, as they would have done it for the MBA first. Perhaps the 13" rMBP could get the soldered RAM, but more likely the next MBA refresh which would be when late 2014/2015?

Welcome!

Could you please specify you needs?
I would recommend the 2013 13" MBA over the 2012 rMBP any day.
Why?
- You need a laptop ASAP; you can afford the MBA now, and the Haswell rMBP release date is still a mystery
- MBA has a lot more advantages: 12 hour battery, better GPU (Intel HD 5000), faster WiFI (AC), faster SSD, sleeker & cheaper!

The retina display is bonus but not that significant on a 13". So if you weigh your options, I would go MBA in a heart-beat.
In terms of resale value, I am not too sure, but generally all Macbooks hold their value relatively well.
you would still recommend that even with a deal like this?

Just a thought/question...

I recently purchased a rMBP 13" at Best Buy on sale with an additional $100 education discount - amazing screen and speed with no issues for my use coming from a mid 2009 MBP. It says late 2012 in the about this Mac info - 2.5/8gb/128 version.

I checked the serial number on the "chipmunk" website and this shows the manufacturing date to be in the first week of July 2013.

If there was an imminent release of the next gen MBPs coming soon would they still be manufacturing this model a few weeks ago? Is this site accurate?

dont you have any lag issues? like when scrolling web pages or stuff like that?
im looking into buying one and i wanna know if its really happening

No issues that I have seen so far. It has been amazingly fast, but I'm coming from a 2009 MBP. It starts up so fast! 8 seconds to do a full cold startup. It seems quick and snappy on everything I have done, no retina screen issues, great build quality with no issues.

I posted because of the recent manufacturing date that showed up on that chipmunk site - it says it was made just a few weeks ago, so it made me curious about how this might play into the speculation about the next gen haswell MBP models.

Dual External Display.

I just retired my 2008 MacBook Pro, and am looking forward to buying the next generation of rMBP. I work as designer and need to attach 2 external (non-thunderbolt) display to my MBP. rMPB would be the ideal choice since it has 2 thunderbolt port and hdmi but since their release has been delayed, I was wondering if I should go for ivy rMBP and use the extended display option or go for Haswell MBA and figure out a way to use 2 external display. I can't use usb graphic card due to lack to quality.

Please suggest the best way to go for and if there is a way to attach 2 display to MBA without using usb-graphic card.

Thx.

I personally would. The HD 4000 in the 13" rMBP is just a complete waste and kills the computer. It is the main reason I didn't buy one last year. It is a budget part suited for budget laptops and nothing claiming to be high end should have it. You can get the i5 MBA with the faster 512 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM for $100 more. The faster SSD and HD 5000 graphics are worth the extra $100 and will serve you much better than the screen on the rMBP.

Thanks for your suggestions. I am not a heavy user though i want one for browsing, pdf reading and watching Bluray(1080p) rip movies.
Is there any noticeable difference between MBA and rMBP displays in regarding to my needs above?
Will Haswell MBA fit for my needs? Thanks

Yeah seems like Kuo was right. I could see Apple making two models of the 15inch rMBP. One with Iris Pro graphics for probably $1799 and then another 15inch rMBP with HD 4600+7500 that starts at the current $1999 price.

That would satisfy a lot of people at least. A lot of people want to dGPU and a lot of people don't!

Not a lot of people NEED a mac. Most, including me, just want one. I need a computer for college, early August. I can use a mac or windows laptop, I just like the mac operating system better. I cannot justify purchasing a $2000+ laptop with outdated specs. And by outdated, I mean not the latest.

I agree. There are some though that either need it for work, or for software that is simply better on a Mac - to say nothing of developers.

I'll answer my own question... the physical interface appears to be a little different:

Currently i have pc with samsung 23" tn panel display, and the colors arent accurate at all,
If i color the whole screen purple for instance, at the top of the screen it will look purple but at the bottom it will appear kinda blue...

Thats the reason i want an ips panel where the viewing angles are greater and the colors are more accurate...

What would you do in my situation?
I use photoshop as a hobby while studying computer science in college...

RAM is different, the reliability is so good you can use it for years .. transfer between generations of laptop without failing.
SSD in the other hand doesn't have reliability as high as RAM.

Those formats that you mentioned is a standard, can be used on machines other than rMBP.
the Mac market alone is not that large it isn't worth pouring R&D resources just to develop a product that people may or may not buy.

Yes. Mainly because Apple wants to get rid of Samsung...
I see this a lot, but I don't begin to believe it. The litigation hasn't been pleasant, and Apple has made some strategic moves to improve their bargining position with Samsung by reducing their near-total dependence in some areas, but I have to believe that Apple knows that Samsung has tremendous resources and bleeding-edge development work that Apple will want/need to have access to in the future. After the "play fair, don't just steal our designs" phase (the litigation) is over, both sides know that it is in both their long-term interests to have a strong relationship.

I'm all in for an Iris Pro-only rMBP! Would be PERFECT for my needs. I'm not a gamer, but I use Photoshop regularly (I work as a developer/web developer, but sometimes design things). And the edram of the Iris Pro makes this thing screaming fast with OpenCL.

So I'd rather spend the remaining cash on more RAM and a larger SSD.

16 gigs of RAM is a must, but I could afford a 512GB SSD if Apple cut the price on the Iris Pro version.

Oh well, let's see what time will bring!

I'm an optimist, so please humor me
In the case where a new model comes out today (yes I know it's unlikely please don't respond saying it won't come out today), what time would the store be updated? around 1pm ET when keynotes usually start?

I hate to rain on your parade... but usually the store is down before 6:00 AM EST with silent releases :(

I'd say go to an Apple Store or a Best Buy and see if the screen on the Air is accurate enough for you. In my limited use of Air's, I've not had any problems with off angle viewing (the purpleish look you are describing). In the most extreme of viewing angles, the rMBP will still be better, but the Air should look fine in most normal use cases.

I've bought a MBA 2013, and i have had a real problem with angle viewving. This display is a big ****. (Sorry for my poor english).
Then i've returned it to Apple, and now i wait a rMBP with a real good screen ! :)

September is usually iPhone/iPod/iPad month.

I think you're looking squarely at October.

I feel mean for having to repeat "October, October, October" so many times in this thread... but... people, please accept reality already and stop this madness.

Browsing a review and... another kick in the face. I don't want to have to buy a laptop for college a month before the new one comes out...

Lets say they have both September for iPhone, and October for iPad.
whats the point of releasing macs on October if they are going to do a silent refresh anyway?

the paradigm has shifted to tablets ...
mac sales are declining, and the longer they delay the refresh the longer those numbers will recover.

For the 15" rMBP, how much a difference will Haswell really make? Realistically.

Additional battery life, mostly. Possible reduction in gaming performance if they go iGPU only. Then there's the possible PCIe SSDs and 802.11ac, both which aren't Haswell per se.
