Hahaha made my day

I remember the hundreds of outraged member's comments made shortly after WWDC, most insulting the decision to prolong the release, and some claiming that the current rMBP won't sell well, as it would be outdated in the new emerging Haswell notebook market... It now seems like a lot of those people are buying the current rMBP.

Goes to show you that the rMBP was in no need of an update at WWDC - it is still the top dog a year on.

Personally, I am still holding out, I refuse to be a stock clearer in Apple's scheme :p hopefully the new GPU doesn't disappoint

I think this thread should be renamed "I am still waiting for Haswell, but I just ordered / bought / got my new/refurb MBP to outsmart and withstand the waiting game"...

It is always a win/win situation for Apple. Thanks to their marketing intelligence, most people would still give away their money to get old gen or even new release with ditched components at the same or more expensive price...
Bravo Apple, chapeau!... :D

I felt a tinge of worry when I read that Apple is specifically asking Intel to do this.

Does this mean they want to push for Iris-only rMBP? Is Iris even anywhere near beating a 750M?

I know wanting a discrete GPU may eventually be a thing of the past, but I don't think we're there yet.

There was extensive discussion of this earlier in this thread. General end is that the Iris Pro 5200 is much better at compute tasks (transcoding video, compiling code, etc. Think how you would use a Quadro or FirePro card), but it is worse (20-60%) at gaming. Those numbers (particularly the 60%) will likely be improved somewhat in future driver updates. So whether it is better or worse depends on how you will use your GPU most of the time.

So I've still got a week left to return this Air top spec. I've made a huge mistake. To the Apple store I go :/

So, code compilation is done now by the GPU instead of the CPU... What a lazy CPU is the Haswell... :D

What huge mistake did you do?

And having an extra 128mb of CPU cache will help with CPU tasks.

Yes, moving display framebuffers from EDRAM to iGPU would be much faster than moving them from RAM to iGPU (which was the case with HD4000). In fact, if iGPU has direct access to EDRAM, then CPU would likely just instruct iGPU to fetch framebuffers and display them...

This seems like the right thread to post in... I need a laptop for college that can do both photo/video editing and engineering work. The 13" retina macbook pro is the perfect size and quality and has the retina display for media editing. Will waiting for the haswell macbooks be worth it (in my case)? I'm stuck with purchasing from the Apple store because my parents agreed to pay for a 1/3 of the cost with a gift card (nonrefundable, but I'm still hugely appreciative). I could get a refurbished "13.3-inch MacBook Pro 2.5GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5 with Retina Display" for $1518 including the protection plan. Is the plan even needed? I do not like the added $250... That could be saved for college.

If you can wait, then Haswell will be definitely worth it. They will add a much better iGPU (The HD 5100) and it will likely have better battery life as well, not to mention a better display if Apple decides to put IGZO.

The current 13" rMBP will match all your college needs you described, although falls short if you plan to game (due to lack of discrete GPU).

Basically, you can either get the current 13" rMBP now, take advantage of the BTS offer; which will land you a $100 Apple Store gift card. And obviously immediately use it for College.
or
Wait a rumored ~2-3 months for the Haswell rMBP, miss out on the BTS offer and enjoy the extra battery (est. 5 more hours), better graphics (est. 20-30% better) + other goodies.

Totally depends on how urgently you need the laptop, if you can comfortably hold off for a few months then I'd advise you to wait, if not, go out and grab one now, the current rMBP is still a great machine.

In terms of the protection plan; you get 1 year apple-care complimentry with your purchase and you can purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan anytime within the one year warranty period. Read the FAQ for more infor

Seems to me the only reason to buy now is in the event of catastrophic failure of your current machine or urgent need for work, fear of no dGPU, or impatience.

If it's for the sake of two months my trusty Santa Rosa MBP will have to soldier on.

Hi everyone,

I've been reading this thread for ever and now I'm lost with all these rumors...

I'll be in the market for a brand new laptop and I want to buy a mac for several reasons.

- I worked as a graphic designer for one year (apprenticeship) on a Mac Pro.

- I will enter college where i'll study multimedia communication.

I use my laptop for browsing web, watch videos, watch HD movies, Photoshop, Indesign and coding (HTML, CSS, JS and so on). On a less regular basis I also use Illustrator, Premiere, Audition and Blender.

The laptop i'll buy will also be my main computer.

Do you think The macbook pro(15" retina) that will be unveiled in october will suit my needs ?

I know everyone is asking the same thing, sorry to bother. Plus sorry if my english isn't perfect, i'm working on it !

Thanks

I'm doing all this and web development (mostly php+mysql = netbeans, dreamweaver) + some .net thru parallels desktop (i'm closing photoshop and netbeans when using windows) + xcode (i'm learning now) on base Air 2011 (except for hd movies).

Me too + HD movies on a base 2012 Air but with 8GB of ram :)
