SO some interesting news here: Dell releases a new Inspiron 7000 line on september 26th. This is (undoubtedly) Dell's answer to Apple's Macbooks

Let's take a look at the 15" model shall we:
-22mm thick
-aluminium housing
-Haswell processors
-Gorilla Glass touchscreen available at 1920x1080
-Optional Nvidia Geforce graphics
-separate number pad
-battery life ranging between 8 and 12 hours
-starting at 700 dollars

I am not saying you'll get the 1920x1080 (Gorilla Glass) screen, i7 and a Nvidia dGPU for 700 dollars but it wont be much more expensive than HALF the price of the Macbook Pro retina. I don't know about you guys but these look very good, and at half the price Apple needs to be at least as good! Ofcourse it lacks the retina display and it is still a bit thicker than a retina, but you know what I mean.

Will Apple add an optional Nvdia dGPU as well? Will Apple's rMBP's achieve 12 hours as well? Will Apple drop the price since the difference is becoming huge?? Will Apple announce the new rMBP somewhere around september 26 too??? Food for the mind in this topic I guess.

You did not stake the storage in the computer. Raise the price ~$200-300 for an SSD, and then another $100 for 8GB ram standard. Once we're at $1200-1400 we're at about same price as other windows competition compared to the rMBP. But yes, mid-ranged computers have gotten extremely affordable in the last year or so...

^ I say $1400 like it's an okay gap, because I know the gap between a Macbook Pro and the equivalent spec'ed will never be less then $400-$500. You can call that, the Apple tax, or the price you pay to run OSx. Or "superior build quality, if you must. Or even, the "apple experience"

I guess 8GB will be standard, the SSD will probably be an expensive option :)
However it's worth to mention, it depends on how good the new rMBP will actually be and at what price. Dropping the cMBP and keeping the base rMBP at the current prices is unacceptable.

Well here's a summary for the 13" model (the one I'm interested in).

CPU (at 28W)
Base CPU: Dual core Intel i5 4258U @2.4GhZ with TurboBoost at 2.9 or (less likely) Intel i5 4288U @2.6Ghz, turboboost at 3.1Ghz.
Optional CPU: Dual core Intel i7 4558U @2.8Ghz, turboboost at 3.3Ghz.

GPU
Intel HD5100 (Iris Pro)

SDD
Base SDD: 128 Gb or, less likely, 160 or 256Gb.
Optional: 256, 512, 768 (not likely) 1 Tb.

RAM
Base SDD: 8Gb DDR3
Optional: 16Gb DDR3

SCREEN: Retina display unchanged or (less likely) a thicker and more robust front glass

WiFi: 802.11 a/c

BATTERY LIFE: 10 hours

PRICE: Unchanged or, (less likely) slightly reduced (-100$/€).

ANNOUNCED
: October or (less likely) 2014 or (even less likely) silent update end of september.

Oh I forget.... F U C K, I want this damn machine!

As for me the difference with the actual rMBP is important. This is a significative upgrade. I'd the opportunity to test for an hour the actual rMBP, it has some lag and difficulties, expecially when opening photos. HD4000 is not enough for the retina display.

Yup. Bingo. That's spot-on. Many people post predictions and get everything wrong.

I'm personally hoping for 256GB as standard, but I'm not expecting it. 16GB RAM option would be nice, but not expecting that either. I think we will see Thunderbolt 2, but no IGZO screen. I'm debating whether I want to step up to the i7 CPU.

I want this 13-inch machine badly as well.

.

I strongly prefer to spend money for 256Gb upgrade, much much more important.

As for the RAM: why not as option? The OS support it. If people want to spend money on that apple should be happy.

As for me: for sure the base model, perhaps (but unlikely given money constraint) if the base is only 128GB I will buy the 256Gb.

So basically, aside from new Intel innards... just an option for 16GB RAM?

Sounds pretty boring. Don't outdo yourself there bro. :D

Intel HD 5100 is not (Iris Pro). 5100 is Iris, and 5200 is Iris Pro. Big difference

Correct.

Ok, I'm very happy for Intel Iris Graphics 5100 (this should be the correct name).

While 15" buyers should be very happy for Intel Iris Pro Graphics 5200 (well, more or less...)

It has always been Intels plan to integrate as many features of other components of the system in to their CPU's so they can be the sole chip provider for the system. I wouldn't be surprised to see them integrate audio and networking in to the CPU before long.

from what I remember of a past IDF, they were showcasing a digital networking component, that could indeed fit in the cpu and that was its purpose anyway, I think it was this year IDF

anyway integration for them is much more beneficial, PCH is gone next year

checking this thread for months and now signed up to say i really fed up waiting this haswell!!! need new macbook and still dont wanna buy latest retina because of coming haswell line.

Welcome to the party. We are all in the same boat here.

If you are wanting 13'', wait for haswell. If you want 15'' - saving several hundred dollars and buying now is not a bad option. (if money/time are issues).

I personally want 15" one and hoping that the iteration we are waiting for will include TB2, so I can plug a bigger 4k monitor to it as well, in a year or so when they get cheaper. Otherwise I would have already bought the current one..

Well that seems about what we would expect for it. Perhaps you should include IGZO as a maybe. And doesn't Apple usually have three different CPUs instead of two? Please correct me if I'm wrong on that one. Apple could drop the price of the rmbp, to conintue to make the cmbp the least-favourable model by an even higher margin. Or perhaps Apple will keep the high price in order to make some higher margins. I'll go with an October 24th anouncement.

Three CPUs are in the post you quoted. But no, not always. The Haswell MBA only has 2 CPUs.

One look at the spec sheet.

1. QHD+ 3200x1800 IGZO
2. 0.7 inches/4.5lbs
3. Upto 16GB/512GB
4. Quadro K1100M 2GB.
5. Haswell Quad core 4702MQ.

If this has an option for around $2200, I'm sold. Dell has an excellent three year warranty on their business line so that's another factor to consider in the price.

Yes, yes I would.

Unless Apple does something bat **** crazy this year.. say release the Haswell rMBPs in a week. :D

I agree. One key new feature is missing from your spec though (IMHO): Thunderbolt 2

WOW!! The guy mentioned that this dell is the thinnest notebook? Isn't the rMBP .70" thin too or is it .71? Damn, Apple sure better be cooking up something good with their next rMBP line!! This wait is killer!

That was not part of Intel's plan in the 1970s and 1980s, but it has been part of Intel's plan since sometime in the 1990s.

I think it started a bit earlier than that, they released the 80486DX2 with integrated (and fast) mathematical floating point logic in 1989. This chip was the first that didn't support a co-processor for floating point and it didn't need it either.

As I say it debuted in 1989 but the designing of the processor started much earlier than that possibly before 1985 which shows how forward thinking they were even in the 80's - Since then they have gone on to integrate the memory controller, PCIe controller and Graphics. They even have chip designs with 802.11 wireless networking support with the antenna tracers coming out of the CPU socket.

Now obviously when I said it has always been Intel's plan to integrate other system functions into the CPU I was referring to people here discussing the iris pro like it's a revelation, it was clear they always intended to put that fast GPU in to their CPU's since several years ago without Apple being involved and the same goes for all the other stuff they have integrated over the past 25 years, this is what Intel does.
