The Iris Pro also has 128 MB eDRAM to boost its performance over past Intel IGPs. I suspect the other performance gains in CPU and memory are just from the Haswell architecture.

Anandtech has reviewed the Iris Pro in the past and it holds its own against the GT 650M.

Reread that article. It is slower by up to 40% on many tests. And, that's last gen technology. The 750M is 10-20% faster than the 650M.

The Iris Pro is much closer to a 640M, which it replaced on the iMacs. Good thing that Apple seems to know what's up.

Yes, Iris Pro meets the 640M. However it "almost" meets the 650M, but instead, is considered a 640M equivalent. It is true the 750M is basically a rehashed 650M, but it still has performance gains over the 650M. It will likely be ~20%

The 13" has plenty of muscle for LR and PS. I live in those two apps using an Early 2011 model. (Sandy Bridge, HD3000). Two additional components are also a must IMO:

  1. An SSD to handle Large RAW files as you go in/out of LR and PS.
  2. A well calibrated external monitor
SSD's are commonplace now. Go for large. Good 27" monitors are cheap these days.

Oh thank you! That's exactly the answer I was hoping for. I'm working with a Win7 PC now which isn't a problem per se but it's like 6years old and full and really really really slooooooooow. (Win 8 is not an option!)
So I´ll go with the 13" and save the additional money for a bigger external screen. Thanks a lot!

I think they probably will be released this October, but I have no problem with the fact that I don't know when they'll be released. Early November wouldn't surprise me at all either.

October or bust

Even if it's only announced in October and not released until early November, it'll still be better than this. At least then we'll know exactly what's going to be in the update and when we can buy it.

Do you think it´ll handle the files of a Nikon D600? (24MP)

Hi there,

First post for a first time mac buyer. I am sick to death of PCs burning out on me. I've been watching/lurking this thread for a while after checking the buyers guide for weeks before that and I'm with you all, waiting on the new pros...

However....

I'm starting to think that I could be waiting for nothing if the 13" cMPB will do the job well enough, or more to the point, if the new ones will make much of a difference.

I'm a musician using mostly ableton and various other DAWs. I'm wondering will the new Haswells make any difference to me other than battery life? Will any of the predicted new features/upgades? Or will they infact hinder me in any way?

I am aware that I am asking some possibly stupid questions, but you all seem so well informed and friendly, that I'm hoping someone can help me out. This is a whole new (and exciting) world for me.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the huge first post.

Welcome to Macrumors! Hope you'll enjoy your future Mac

It wouldn't make a noticeable difference on Haswell for you.

Do you want a retina or cMBP? Live is not yet optimized for retina displays, so you won't get any advantages on that (other than it looks GREAT when browsing the web, and it's slimmer).

Definitely. I process Canon RAW file equivalents that average 25MB in size. LightRoom handles them easily and this can only be better on newer MBP than what I have.

Hang on a few weeks though. See what happens with the update.

I would be surprised if the Haswell MBP release were to be announced in advance. I don't see any reason to expect it to be different from this week's iMac release. In the seemingly unlikely event the Haswell MBP release doesn't happen by 19 November, then I would start to expect Apple to push it back to early 2014. I still think October looks more like than November or 2014. I'm personally hoping for 1 October because, if it isn't released then, I will buy an Ivy Bridge rMBP.

Why would it not?

Just updated my "rMBP updated SMS script", as I noticed that there was no "New" badge on the updated iMac models. Isn't that strange? The MBA's have their "New" badge, but not the newly updated iMac?

So had to update, so it sends a text if HD 4000 is not on the page :D

Thanks again.
And of course I´ll hang in till the upgrade comes. Can only get better, right?
So are you in for an upgrade as well? I thought your 2011 macbook was alright handling your RAW files. Or do you upgrade just for the fun of it?
Did you upgrade the cpu or do you have the base model?

----------

Why would it not?

Just wanted to make sure because I´m sitting in front of a big desktop PC
with 4GB Ram and applying wrinkle cream to prevent ageing everytime when LR has frozen yet again. So my thought was: Yes, the Macbook will be newer but it is "only" mobile technic and I often read between the lines that mobile isn´t as good/as fast as desktop stuff. I also bought a netbook from Samsung some 3 years back and it´s just awful even if I just use it to write my RAW files to an exernal drive, not speaking of trying to work on them.

So I wanted to be sure if a 13" would be enough for LR and Photoshop.
I want to be set for a couple of years as I have never before paid so much for a computer let alone a notebook.

Maybe they want to coincide the release of the mac pro with an update on rmbp.

My guess is that the rmbp will be 'updated' with a new chassis in a space grey color.

this will be after the 'ipad' event i think.

Space grey is not my taste. I am very happy with the current design! It is even one of the main reasons, why I buy the rMBP.

It will be interesting to see if another DP for Mavericks is released next week.

If not (which is what I expect), they're wrapping things up and preparing for an October release.
However, if they do release another DP, things are looking bad for an October release of Mavericks and thus for the rMBP.

So, fingers crossed for no more DP's!

Hey we're closing to catch the "just bought a MBP etc.." topic!

Just 142 posts left. And, we sum up all discussions in this forum regarding haswell rMBP (at least other two) we are well above 9000 posts.

That's really a lot...

And fingers crossed for a GM, which should be this Monday if we're hoping for a release on the 15th and go by the timeline for Mountain Lion.

And why is that?
I would have thought it the other way round.

Because most people looking to get a 2nd hand machine are more concerned about a deal and a low price then the specs. So a machine with a $1000 worth of upgrades you will need to sell them on by offering a lower price.

A 16GB iPhone has better resale % then the 64GB for the same reason. The $ saving consumer does not want to spend lots of extra money on GB's. They will be happy to own an iPhone. So you can sell a 16 for close to retail. A 64 will have to come down a little more in $ because you will be in a price war with the 16 and 32.

I can confirm this. Not this year, but since 2008, I yearly bought my macbook during the back to school promo + my 12% student discount. So I could sell it one year later without making any loss, while using a brand new macbook pro. This only worked with base models. In 2011 I upgraded my SSD and I made a 150€ loss. It's not bad, but I wouldn't upgrade anymore. Even obvious updates like 4GB to 8GB ram won't pay out for you.

Never upgrade, if you want to resell it! 95% of the buyers just care about, when you bought it and that it has no scratches and not if it has more ram or a bigger ssd :)

That would be great. But even the following Monday would be good too. Of course that's assuming the event is on the 15th and not the following week.

Well thanks for the tip. Problem is, I was counting on using it longer than a year and I really do need a big ssd so I can have my large LR-catalogue plus previews on it and still be able to work efficiently. Plus I'm planning to install Win7 too, so I don't think I'd be happy with the base model. So it wouldn't make any sense for me, would it?
