Does anyone really feel the need for a 4k screen or are you full of want because it's the new shiny? I'd be perfectly happy with retina.
I neither want nor need a 4K 15" screen.

I *do* want a GPU package that is capable of pushing 4K at reasonable frame rates to an external 4K display.

"Based on IGZO" presumably means that Dell uses IGZO panels. Dell has announced the M4800 and M3800, both of which use IGZO panels with the exact same resolution and size. The M3800 seems to be practically identical to the XPS 15 with the expection of it using a Quadro graphics card instead of a GT. As far as I'm aware there no technology available that can be described as being similar to IGZO. The step has been straight from IPS to IGZO. I don't think there's an inbetween solution that can work. There's also no IPS screen that I've heard of anywhere that has this resolution. An IGZO display is likely also the reason why Dell can claim 13 hours of battery life. Everything points straight towards an IGZO display. By the looks of it this might be my next laptop. I was hoping that Dell would make a consumer version of the M3800 since I don't really use applications that benefit much from workstation drivers.

i too was thinking how dell can claim that much battery life without the power sipping igzo display. i think there's a high chance that apple will include these displays in their upcoming rMBPs too. They're probably just waiting till maverick is finished so they can advertise great battery life. IGZO+haswell+maverick= 12 hours?! man, i wish!

With ipad mini being delayed due to the retina screen, this month or this year may not be a possibility for rMBP.

----------

Do companies like MacMall and B&H discount brand-new MacBook Pros when they're released or does that happen a few months into the cycle?

Trying to decide whether to get a discounted early 2013 rMBP now or wait till the new ones come out.

My budget is around $1,500 to $1,700 and I'll be using Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign on it.

Keep in mind that the rMBP at MacMall is not even the current build - it's the 2012 build. Maybe when the new ones come out, the 2013 build will be discounted.

Maybe...the 13" Air went from 7 hrs wireless web in 2012 to 12hrs in the Haswell model this year. So with the 15" retina being at 7hrs in the 2012 model, maybe they want to go for 12hrs in a 15" Haswell retina model for late 2013 to match up.

I would expect IGZO to hit Macbooks next year. The various Sharp display sizes and resolutions have been known for months. I don't think I've seen any that would fit with the rMBP. I think the only chance Apple of getting IGZO displays this year is if they go with this 3200x1800 panel instead of a 2880x1800 panel. I could be wrong, but none of the rMBP screen related rumours seem to have credibility enough for me to believe them. There's always one or two things that are off about them. Haswell and Mavericks should give some extra battery juice. Sadly, I suspect that the IGZO display is likely a big player in the claimed 13 hour battery life.

All these rumors about the next generations of iPad and iPad mini scare me not less. I hope we'll hear soon some rumors about new MBPs because the waiting is killing me... :D

It's all clear to me now. They won't release the MBP this year because my mom didn't make me breakfast this morning.
I don't think so. This morning, when I saw my fried egg looked like this, I was 100% sure the Haswell MBP would be released during this month. :D

Waiting for Haswell rMBP for 8 months now - have some crazy idea at the moment - What if Apple realized that IGZO will not be ready until Q1 14' as well as Broadwell until Q1 15' and they providently decided to change "Macbook Pro release month" from October to February - starting from making a small spec bump of Ivy rMBP in February 2013? So, we can easily dont see Haswell rMBP until February 2014 until IGZO arrived; also it makes sense for delayed Broadwell to Q4'14/Q1'15 that probably could be released in February 2015. Apple is forward-thinking company and despite its unlikely, but its still possible.

Did you read what I wrote on #2?

You made my point precisely. Fast forward 5 years, and the cost of memory that is still compatible goes way up.. to say nothing of that fact that you simply can't upgrade a notebook mobo beyond it's maximum allowable memory, and certainly not with the newer, faster memory that isn't compatible, obviously.

But I did mention that here - and I don't deny it:

I still disagree on the memory front, I just bought 2x8gb sticks for an old laptop for my wife. it was DDR2 (which was released late 2003) and it was cheap.. as for your comment about the motherboard limit.. I wonder what that would be if we could upgrade the ram.. I actually wasted some money buying 2 8 gig sticks for my old mac mini, only to find it was capped at 6gb.. sucks. I do see your point on mobo limit, but the choices they give us now will be at least 1/3 of what we could have maxed it out to be in the future. oh well, Ive decided just to keep my mbp nice, and sell it every 2 years and upgrade..

I understand. My iMac came with 2GB, I upgraded it to 4, but won't upgrade it to it's limit of 6GB because its too much for too little improvement.

And like we both said, there's a slot limit (an argument against a non-servicable machine) as well as a mobo limit, which happens whether or not it's upgradeable.

Yes but you have to realize this makes no sense.
Apple knows very well that there is always new technologies on the horizon.
And there would be no reason to loose 4 months of sales AND loose the Christmas sales just to include 1 more technology, and "sync it to next release" better.
It would not make any sense at all.
The Christmas sales is the biggest sales of the whole year. Of course there is a reason Apple releases so many of their products just before the Christmas shopping starts.
It was the same reason they rushed the Air out just before BTS.

All,

I've been following the thread for quite a while now and I was wondering what your thoughts were on gaming on the new 13" inch rMBP based on all the rumors written in this thread.

I'm not talking about gaming on ultra settings. But I'd love to see some better FPS in games like World of Warcraft, Diablo III and some new Steam games through Boot Camp.

Currently I'm gaming on my MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010) 2.66Ghz C2D with 8GB's of RAM. Graphics card is the Nvidia GeForce 320M with 256MB memory.

Just wondering what you're thinking, so let me know.

Would'nt it be cool regardless of IGZO display not making it or not, that Apple decided to use silicon anode batteries that further help extend the battery life already increased by Haswell?

How is Dell pumping out all these new releases with IGZO displays and Apple not? I feel like Apple would buy priority over Dell

Last I checked, DDR2 sticks are pretty expensive.

How hard was it to understand. If Apple is having problems with retina displays for ipad minis, they possibly could be experiencing the same for rMBP.

I guess it's easier to believe rumors based on delusion cloaked as logic.

Sharp produced a variety of IGZO displays with very high DPI. Apple might take priority over Dell, but they probably won't be prioritised over all the Windows laptop manufacturers who typically use 16:9 displays instead of 16:10. If Apple is willing to use 16:9 displays they could easily have IGZO displays this year. It would be a slight downgrade in screen size, but these displays are otherwise a fairly large upgrade over the rMBP screen even if you ignore power savings. I wouldn't count on it.

I see your point but the manufacturing process for an iPad Mini display is not the same as the MBP's
