I remember when I mocked my teacher's Mac OS 8 but secretly drooled at the G3 hardware.

Even so, that would be at least 5-6 years down the road.
Well, I plan to be around then. (And preferably not pecking away at a 27" iPad or, flapping my arms at who-knows-what tech they come up with).

Dude, I was an Apple hater but living in denial. Saw my brother-in-law's whitebook many years ago and marveled at the engineering and construction. First laptop I ever saw that didn't creak when you opened the display and you could do it with one hand. Never looked back.

Also born in 1990. I remember when all you would see in coffee shops for much of the 2000's were Macs. This is still true, but now you see iPhones and iPads all over the place as well.

I actually really miss that era, when all people had were a laptop and a basic phone.

Apple isn't that 'exclusive' brand anymore it used to be. Nowadays it's quite normal that you have an iPhone if not a MacBook and/or iPad. Everybody just picks up a brand to be somebody. More like, all my friends have an iPhone so now I need to have one 'haswell'. ;-)

As do I, but I'm not sure if it's because I miss being younger or because it was a "simpler" time.

Yeah, I know. Look at how many people who have an iPhone/iPad but are running Windows.

But in the past few years, it's becoming increasingly more and more about the ecosystem. So I think this will change again.

I do agree with you on that, only the 'die-hard' Apple lovers will stick to the brand. Still I don't think it is a bad thing that Apple allows their users to use Windows on their Macs.

There is no doubt in my mind the early 2013 is anything short of incredible especially at a discount it has relevance these next two years. The Haswell looming around the corner presents three big improvements: performance, battery life and better screen. Not to mention Thunderbolt 2, 4k support, possibly new build, maverick os and different probably better GPU.
I expect the screens to be identical between the Ivy Bridge and Haswell rMBPs. Mavericks will run on both, so that's not an issue. I expect the big improvements to be battery life (due to Haswell), 802.11ac, PCIe SSD, and a 1080p FaceTime camera. At least the 13" model will also get much faster graphics performance.

That's good to know. I was going to use it in 1920x1200. As a developer, display real estate is everything to me. I wonder how font looks in the terminal at 1920x1200.
I just opened Terminal app on both my 2010 15" MBP at 1680x1050 and my 2013 15" rMBP at 1920x1200. The type looks dramatically better with the rMBP at 1920x1200. It's at least as easy to read (for my eyes) despite being smaller.

I'm surprised you already bought your MBP. I thought you were going to wait with the rest of us. :(
But European prices are a bitch so I can understand.
I wrote a few times that I would be departing the States on the 7th of October and would buy before that.

It's been a good run. Safe travels.

And enjoy your trek across the Ivy Bridge.

I'm leaving the States next year. If I was in his position, I most definitely would have bought when I had to. But since I can wait, I definitely am.

Here's to the 15th or 22nd.

Cool, I still actually haven't seen a retina display properly. I'm saving that experience until I get my own rMBP. That's really great to know though. People say that text is a little hard to read at 1920x1200 resolution so I was a little concerned. But then, I'm a guy who stares at 11pt font on the terminal pretty much all day. Of course, if Apple uses an IGZO display, it will be much better.

Yeah I know, I just wanted to comment on it anyways. :p

Yup--that pretty much echoes the experience I had auditioning Logic on the rMBP at that resolution setting. It really is a night and day difference to my eyes. Can't go back to a sub-retina display. Just can't.

If your eyesight is good, you shouldn't find text particularly hard to read at that resolution. The bottleneck at that setting is the user's vision, as opposed to the fidelity of the display.

LOL at you youngin's

Haha, I know I'm being a typical 90's kid in saying that, but, nevertheless, I do miss the late 90's/ early 2000's. My first Mac OS I used extensively was OS 9, which I absolutely loved. Those colored iMacs kicked booty at my elementary school, and they were still there when I had to visit back in 2008.

Anyways, I've decided I'm gonna go ahead and pull the trigger on getting an Ivy Bridge rMBP. I'd have to...erm...wait a few months after the release anyway, and my Dell laptop from 2009 is on its last legs.

That new dell looks so tempting in the specs and price. If only windows 8 didn't suck. All we can do now is wait and see what apple does. ModMyi website said they confirmed the iPad Keynote day for the 22nd. So I guess that makes it +1 week of waiting. #

I think I just prefer it for being a simpler time. Because I'm still that kind of user today.

Ha! "A simpler time..."

Try NO cellphones, NO pagers, and heck, no answering machines! Prior to the 90s, you could quite literally "get away from it all" just by going outside. And somehow, work still got done. Amazing, innit?

FWIW, my first real PC (not counting my older brother's hand-me-down ZX-80) had a 52MB hard drive, which was just about enough space for MS-DOS and "Wing Commander 2"--a state-of-the-art gaming rig ca. 1990.

I keep wishing I could take Grand Theft Auto 5 back in time to show the 14-year-old version of myself what was in store... just to see the look on my pimply, slack-jawed, awe-struck face. ;)

I always thought the 22nd was more logical for an event than the 15th. As long as this thing is out no later than the 24th, I'm happy.

Bummer for Apple about the retina iPad minis.

Those things would sell like hotcakes over the holidays, but it's looking like all the workers-rights violations in the world won't be enough to fill the First World's stockings with them this season.

I say this as an absolute hypocrite, of course, since I kinda want one myself. ;)

accept for november 11th availability does not sound right.. i was thinking more november 1st a week after the event.. that was the case for the iphones.

If the reports are true I might call it and pickup the rMBP Early 2013 and not the Haswell update this month. Then resell and purchase the Sharp IGZO 4K2K version in mid/fall 2014 my mind is set. I must live in the here and now be as productive as possible. I was referring to the new Maverick OS combined with Haswell processor and GPU when calculating the performance.

I'm thinking similarly, but I'll be getting the Haswell update, and passing that on to my other half when IGZO MBP is released.

thats make no sense, release at the veteran day when all store will be close?
I think those days are over. Other than banks, most retailers are in full swing.

a 10/22 announcement with a pre-order period seems plausible as does 11/11 for the retail fronts. Also, Black Friday is a week later this year.

Agreed. Maybe Apple is having trouble ramping up for production for the iPad 5 as well. I can definitely see the iPad mini 2 being delayed until March or so, but who knows.
