Well you know how it goes, either you stick with Apple or you don't. Some of the stuff you mentioned would force other people to go Windows.

This just isn't 5-10 years ago where Macs were all Apple had. The laptop market is dwindling. I think an argument can be made that Apple is doing all they can.

You mentioned yourself that you are a minimalist when it comes to things. I on the other hand feel like I am on the other end of the spectrum of users trying to get the most out of every penny I invest in these machines. For Dell to have an XPS 15" IGZO model releasing Oct 18th + Haswell processor with a 13 hour battery life, that is a clear shot at the rMBP and a slap to the face. Kind of upset that they beat Apple to the cut.

Well me being a minimalist doesn't have anything to do with the hardware I want in a machine. I'd gladly take IGZO and 13 hour battery life.

Why not just buy the Dell XPS 15" with IGZO instead of the upcoming rMBP 2013/2014 then?

I absolutely have to use OS X. And no way am I going to use anything but a rMBP. I would have bought a Windows laptop months ago if I was willing to do those things. I'm not the one complaining, though. Like I said, there are people who would switch to Windows just so they could get those things that the new Dell XPS offers.

I'm perfectly fine with getting good year-to-year improvements. It's how Apple operates, and they are smart for doing so. They aren't going to include in everything in the Haswell rMBP when they can do so in the Broadwell refresh.

It's like complaining that the iPhone 4S wasn't more after waiting 1.5 years after the 4. People will never be happy.

Ah, got it. The past few months I've just been acting like the 2 grand I'll spend on a Mac just isn't there. And you're going with AppleCare, right? Any reasoning behind that?

I've been thinking about going with more than 256GB, but I'm not sure I'd need it. I can certainly afford a maxed-out rMBP, but no point in doing that if it's going to be a waste. I'm somewhat of a minimalist and would hate having excess space. 128 is too little, but 256 is just right for myself and a lot of people.

I think with SSDs and the cloud, we are rethinking how we use our storage. We no longer need to store everything locally like we did only a few years ago.

If it weren't for AppleCare I would've needed to buy a new laptop 2 years ago instead of being able to get by with what I've had. I didn't have any issues until the last year of AppleCare when I started burning through SATA cables like mad. I'm about as tech-savvy as the average early 20s college kid, so I had no idea what was wrong when I first got the flashing folder of doom. Now I have enough knowledge to replace hard drives and SATA cables myself, but it seems like a waste of time and money to keep fixing a four year old machine that's on its last legs anyway.

So I guess I want AppleCare because it's been helpful in the past and gives me peace of mind for three years. This will probably be the last laptop my parents will buy me, and I won't be making a ton of money after I graduate. With AppleCare I can hopefully get through another 4 years or possibly longer.

256gb just seems like the perfect amount. I don't think I could make 128gb work when my Time Machine backup is probably around 150gb. Unless I can get my current MBP running at least long enough to remove some things and create a new TM for the new rMBP. There's some software I plan on deleting once I get everything set up anyway.

Just a question, pretty sure this would've been asked, but would the Apple store physically have the top end configured model in stock on the day it's released? e.g. for the current model, it would be 3.0ghz, 768GB SSD and 16GB RAM.

Nice clear and informative table!
Only thing I'd recommend is to keep the price of the potential rMBP prices to the current ones off the Apple store to be conservative.
Also, perhaps add a couple more competitors to the high-end category. HP-Envy 15" maybe?

Thank you!

Yea I wasnt sure about the rMBP prices, I was either going to change the Base SSD or lower the start price by $100. but in reality we'll probably have same SSD and same price :/

HP-Envy looks pretty solid too, I was mostly just wanting to compare Ultra high res laptops. but I guess I had the airs and the Razer in their for reference, so I'll add in the HP later

I would love it of the 13-inch got bumped up to a 256GB SSD as base, but I don't think it will happen. But I can totally see a price drop of $100.

because if everything else in the notebook stays the same: Ram, SSD, CPU/GPU(just being changed to next gen), display, etc.

I feel like there has got to be more of a bonus than just refreshing CPU, wifi, etc to the latest hardware.

So I am hoping for either a $100 drop, or SSD increase. or something haha

I use education/work discount anyway. But I certainly don't mind getting out of there spending even less money.

Thank you,

not that I don't believe you, but do you have source

Damn! 13 hours of battery life! this XPS is real impressive! too bad I am looking for a 13" notebook

On the dell community, we think the 4602 is an error, so the 4702 make more sense

I am currently running screaming for the hills, away from Windows (8) after having learned on and suffered from all Win Versions beginning with 3.11 until I was really content with Win7. That´s a really fine OS and I´m very fond of and familiar with it.
But Win 8 is such a no go for me and I could imagine that many other who have contemplated switching have found a good reason in switching now because of Win 8 as well. So let them run, there will be others to buy these beautiful machines.
I´m getting a Macbook for now, will have Win 7 installed on it (I haven´t decided on Parallels vs. Bootcamp yet) and see how MS and Apple develop in the next few years.

So as this ist my first Macbookpro which is competing against an old Samsung NC10 netbook with 1GB of Ram and Win 7 Starters (almost as bad as Win 8), it will be a huuuuuuuuge upgrade.

Oh sweet! for some reason I could not find those, but this has the specs of the XPS 13! I was looking for those too

I do wish dell offered a ultra high res option in the 13"

Man, the more I look at the XPS, the more I want one! Maybe I'll have to look into hackintosh again.... but in reality I wont be able to hold myself back once the rMBPs are updated

I'm with yo. I've waited for months to get a mac and dell out of the question. I've been a loyal dell customer for over 10 years and started off with a refurb desktop, but I'm ready to jump ship. As a technical consultant, Mac gives the best of both worlds: the newness of a MacBook and also access to windows OS for work.

It's one of those times that when you're ready for something new and different, that's all you want. Dell can come up with the best system yet, but all I want is a MacBook.

Apple Stores should stock the 'ultimate' configurations (I assume you mean either 3.0GHz/768/8 or 2.8GHz/768/16), unless they sell out before you get there.

I would consider it on topic because it is the most direct competitor to the Haswell rMBP. And it will ship with an IGZO screen which spurs further conversation about whether or not the Haswell rMBP will come with an IGZO screen too.

then lets talk about all laptops as they all have keyboards.

Can we keep the topic on the Haswell MBP?

WAY to many post about DELL.

So... How about them haswell retina MacBook Pro?

Joke aside, I don't know how long you have been following this thread but people have been talking about the haswell Asus and Dell for a while now and then the conversation just fades because it all comes down to the rMBP. If you keep pushing the conversation out people will just keep talking about it more. Just let it fade out.

Hopefully tomorrow we see some invitations from Apple.
