Good morning all!
6.20am here in California, a little early to tell if invitations will happen today or not.
Going for a surf sesh and hopefully I see some news when I come back to my car.
Either way I'm not expecting anything to happen today but if it does... great!

....
Yes, I could get by with a PC for Word and Google Chrome, but I chose to get a Mac. My parents and I agreed that it was a good investment to not have to take my computer to Geek Squad every few weeks to have viruses removed.

And on my campus I don't really see cheap PCs there are a few Dells but most of them tend to be Lenovo and higher end HPs. We're not a bunch of broke college kids, apparently (or mom and dad are willing to shell out the money for a higher quality machine that will hopefully last until graduation).

I think your salesman convinced you that you'd have to visit Geek Squad every few weeks to have virus removed on a Windows System..

I've been using this dell laptop (core 2, 2gb, 5400 hdd) for programming for the last couple years in uni and my custom built at home. Does it do the job? yes. The rMBP is a pure luxury item. A majority of students I see in class own MBA's and MBP's. The windows community is shrinking. I'm buying the rMBP on release day although I really contemplated the MBA this month. I'm a CS major who likes to play games, and edit photo/video.

I agree with this. I've only owned Dell laptops and desktops and don't think I've encountered a virus in almost 10 years. That's like saying the reason people drive Mercedes vs Ford is Ford cars get into accidents. If you're not doing something that will lead to an accident, you will avoid most accidents.

The reason people get viruses is mainly ignorance. Don't open .exe files from unknown sources and if you're going to download or open them, at least have your virus definition files up to date. That will take care of 99% of potential threats.

My decision to switch to a mac is purely as a luxury item. I have a choice whether to buy a mac or pc and wanted a change. Maybe macs do things better or are more stable, but reading some posts on this board is enough to tell you macs are not 100% fault-free.

I'd recommend you wait another 2-3 weeks and THEN make your decision.

I do find it interesting how some people have no problem buying as a stopgap and then returning. It's just not in my blood I guess. . . I'm going to buy the thing I want when it comes out.

----------

Yep. October 22 it is. No big deal. It's just one more week of waiting.

You forgot to use the word "probably." It may be just me, but the utter certainty in these sorts of statements is bugging me more and more the longer we go... Especially because we heard the exact same thing before WWDC in June.

Yeah, I could get by using Windows too. And I'd save a grand. But I would be giving up so much. There goes all my OS X-exclusive applications, not to mention my productivity going right out the window. Windows is an OS I absolutely hate using.

I don't get why people are trying to tell people to go Windows on here. People obviously go with Macs for a reason.

I don't think anyone is saying go to windows - we're all here because we want macs. The other poster was saying that the argument that PCs have to be serviced that often for a virus problem is baseless. That's not the PC - that's the user.

iPads are "family things" where kids play games and when they go to bed parents get to use. I can understand buying an iPad so my child can play angry birds and watch movies.

I DON'T see why any college age kid needs a quad-core maxed out 15" rMBP to write papers and take notes in class. And yes I understand that you don't have to be in college to spill beer on your laptop but I'm saying the average college kid is more likely to be careless about stuff like that. Again this is just my opinion but I think the Macbook Airs are much more friendly to the college population. I just think the 15" rMBP is overkill for most college students.

This is an argument that will never die because it has always been this way - possibly from the beginning of time. College students speak as if they were the first to ever take college classes. Oh, I need this to do my work because my 2 page assignment requires a $2,000 machine. Sure.

When I was a computer science student, I had a use pentium 2 desktop and at $1600, it was the cheapest/maxed out machine I could afford. Of course, I convinced myself I needed something that powerful to compile 200 lines of C code. So funny when you think about it.

Stephen King and many successful authors wrote most of their bestsellers on manual typewriters.

OSX developers created this brand spanking new OS NOT USING rMBP.

The movies you see were not written nor edited on rMBP.

Let's face it - we want this because it's new and it looks cool. We want it for bragging rights and because we have money to burn. We do not need it because even a 4 year old model will more than exceed our needs.

Anyway, just release the damn things so I can spend the $5000 I've been dying to blow on a machine I'll babysit for 3 days until the newness wears off.

----------

Hopefully we are in for good news in the morning. Good night MacRumorers.

As much as I would love to have this happen, I don't think it will.

----------

Out of curiosity though I wonder how many of these new owners will be using Windows on their rMBPs in some form or another.

I will. I'm a software consultant and one of the reasons I'm okay with blowing $3,500 on rMBP is because I can use windows for my job. If not, it would have been harder to justify 2 new laptops.

Because he has no clue like the rest of us.

Exactly! We're all speculating here - hence the name of the site. When people like Kuo repeat crap a 100 times, others start believing it and this is where we are today - hoping for an announcement that may never come to release a product that was never promised on a date that was never scheduled.

Waiting for Haswell MBP Mega Thread

You forgot to use the word "probably." It may be just me, but the utter certainty in these sorts of statements is bugging me more and more the longer we go... Especially because we heard the exact same thing before WWDC in June.

But it's not the same as before WWDC. Apple couldn't release the rMBP then because the processors weren't ready yet. That's why they couldn't release the iMacs until last month.

There is no way that they are going to wait until next year. That will be a dumb move. Remember, Apple needs to make money. October is the most likely candidate or whenever they release Mavericks.

All I think is, there is a pretty good chance that they will release it this month.

Well I guess the only thing that might delay the rMBP is if Apple decides to wait for IGZO.

dont they need to release new ipads as well for the upcoming holiday season? who is going to buy the iPad 4 and iPad mini at this point unless you really need one?

I'm with Autrement. The certainty of people bugs the crap out of me.
Who told you the reason Apple did not release the rMBP was because processors were not ready? Even if that was the case, processors are not the only components in laptops.

We don't know what apple plans to release in the new system so it's silly to make assumptions of the readiness of these systems.

What if the rMBPs are ready to go, but they faced a problem that would have necessitated another release months later similar to ipad 4/ipad 3.

No one knows anything and we're all speculating. Apple is going to release a product when they feel like it and whether they make us wait 3 weeks or 3 months, we're still going to buy it.

The average customer does not know about MacRumors and will not care about Haswell or broadwell. They'll go into the store and purchase it anyway.

As far as the holiday sales possibility, that does not even factor in. They will release the ipad and apple will make more on ipad/iphone sales. The average person does not spend $2,000 on an xmas gift.

so much for..

a) silent update (already passed the time)

b ) invites for event (not happening today based on previous years, october 16th it is)

october 22nd it is then for macbook pros.

Previous invites have gone out at [edit: 12pm] eastern, 9am pacific.

Still, no rumor is better than a 9to5Mac's news saying that Apple is having issues manufacturing the next rMBP.

It now make sense that Apple waited until now but no one here can know for sure they'll release them this month

there have been no new rumors about when the event is going to be either.. all have said october 15th.. where is a rumor article about it being on the 22nd possibly or later? there have also been no articles that denied either possible date.

True, but the rumor mill was 'a buzz' with people talking about them. AllThingsD, Walt Mossberg, Engadget, etc…but nobody is saying anything now.

No invitations are going out today. I'm not trying to troll but look at the evidence compared to prior events.

We'll know in a week if there will be an event on 10/22.

I am positively, absolutely convinced that invitations might go out today.

I was reminded last night of how bad the battery is in my original unibody MBP. My son borrowed my charger yesterday afternoon. Although my MBP was in sleep mode, it was down to 36% when I picked it up in the evening. A short time later, I saw the lovely message about running on reserve (whatever it's called??) power. Ugh!

This may be true of a lot of college students, but I'm an industrial design/industrial engineering student and a MBP is essential for doing my work. Running Solidworks through Bootcamp on any other portable Mac is horrible, especially if you're switching from Solidworks on windows to Rhino or Inventor on OSX. All of the IDers I work with have designed multiple products exclusively on MBPs.
