iPads are "family things" where kids play games and when they go to bed parents get to use. I can understand buying an iPad so my child can play angry birds and watch movies.

I DON'T see why any college age kid needs a quad-core maxed out 15" rMBP to write papers and take notes in class. And yes I understand that you don't have to be in college to spill beer on your laptop but I'm saying the average college kid is more likely to be careless about stuff like that. Again this is just my opinion but I think the Macbook Airs are much more friendly to the college population. I just think the 15" rMBP is overkill for most college students.

As student I never broke/lost anything like that, was just fine. - Whilst I didn't need a Mac (or want one at the time) I just needed something powerful enough to run CAD software so I built a PC myself.

I still don't think you need a laptop in college, better off getting an ipad/tablet with a dock-able keyboard - it's over kill to drag around all day.

But if you have parents that are willing to spend silly money on an over specced laptops you - so be it. I'm sure their very happy, I wouldn't of appreciated it at that age anyway.

I just hope theres a price drop along with the refresh (if theres any update at all this year!)

The maxed out 15" is definitely overkill for most majors. Personally I think the Air is too fragile for backpacks full of books (and yes, I do still carry actual books). I was also around for the MacBook when the Air was a niche item. Still hard for me to grasp that it's the "budget" model.

Think what you want. I'll be getting my 13" late-2013 rMBP i5 8gb RAM 256gb SSD.

Still can't understand why parents are letting their toddlers with their gooey hands touch expensive, breakable things. I work at a preschool, so I know what they do to toys. Of course growing up in the 90s there was no way my dad was letting me play with his palm pilot. That's what the GameBoy Color and the SNES were for. Of course we also had this awesome thing called Outside (yes, we still played outside in the 90s).

There's a big difference between 2 and 22. My parents trust me to be responsible with my own electronics whereas they didn't when I was younger. If you don't trust your kid with expensive things in college, you have the right to not buy them.

Tablets really aren't powerful enough to be your sole device in college. The Surface Pro might be an exception. When writing a paper I need the word processing program open as well as a web browser with multiple tabs open. Sometimes I have them side by side. This isn't yet possible with tablets and the main mobile OSes. Tablets are fine for note taking, but they're not yet capable of the multitasking that modern students are doing.

I know ScubaCinci has already eluded to the likely release of Mavericks on 29th October based on the 9to5mac article, but it seems no one noticed his post because there are so many posts flooding the thread

To summarise:
  • Financial Call on 28th October, Mavericks will likely release the following day
  • No invites sent for Apple Event thus far today, 22nd October likely candidate

My speculation is 22nd October Apple Event for new products. Retina Macbook Pro may be announced and ship following week with Mavericks. My 2 cents.

Quoting myself for the people who come to this thread for constructive speculation not to scroll through arguments.

My apologies. Just tired of people in this thread thinking that not everyone here should buy an rMBP. It's been a long wait, and emotions are high.

8-10 hours, and we should have some sort of idea :)

Morning! Let's hope we'll see some invites today.

Awesome! :D

I have a good feeling about today. Once I see the invites, I can breathe a small sigh of relief. Be it this week or the next week. Just think, we can all have our rMBPs this month!

And yes, I think there is a 90% chance that they will release the rMBP this month. Makes a lot of sense releasing it with Mavericks (even though this was not too clear a month or two back)

On Sept 3rd the iphone invites were reported around these times:

MacWorld 9am est.
Engadget 12noon est.
Macrumors 1pm est.
9to5Mac 11pm est.

Are you kidding me? Writing thousands and thousands of words over the course of 4 years, plus doing research in browser windows, then switching back between them? No way an iPad is efficient at doing that. And that's just for the standard major that only requires normal written out assignments. What about science majors that require tons of graphs, tables, and mathematical formulas, not to mention majors that require doing things other than just research and papers, like CAD programs for engineering, Adobe CC for design, 3D programs for animation, etc.

An iPad is good for note taking in class at best.

If I were a parent I would NOT spend $2000+ on a computer when I know that one drunken night and a spilled beer = all that money wasted.

Agree that the MBA is a good choice for college kids.

Oh, you will never imagine the things I have seen laptops survive at college parties

Exactly. Laptops aren't as fragile as most parents would think. At the same time though, they aren't as resilient as college students think they are either. Oddly enough, I've seen more laptops have issues (dents and screen problems) due to being stuck in backpacks with books than being dropped during a party or getting beer spilled on it.

Mostly true although students limited to one screen might like the resolution of the rMPB to be able to fit more on the screen. It's easier to be more productive.

This is it: the real difference between the air and the pro line is the screen. I'd much prefer an Air to be honest, but the resolution in 2013 is ridiculous. My 5 year old Dell net/notebook has higher density than the newest 13" Air.

If the mba13 had a modern 1920x display (if not more) everything would be different.

The Haswell Macs are like Half Life 3, never going to happen. :(

already macbook air and imac hasweel happened so..halfway 2 more to go..macbook pro and mac mini

----------

im very interested on how much will consume on idle a mac mini...because last year was still number 1

Haswell Airs were released almost 1/3 year ago now which is a very long time ago in this world. They'd better come up with something special than just the standard upgrades that the Air got as well. Please make us worth the wait Apple...

My guess is:

1) 1% - when did apple announce an event date anyway? The rumored event is only listed in one place, Christian Post, and I bet it has Kuo's fingers all over it.

2) 1% - hey, there's always a possibility

3) 98%

That was my point - I was being facetious. Did not think I needed to italicize and put smileys over it. ;)

you troll who bought the current rMBP and dont want a new update because your actual rMBP would be outdated....

we saw you from a mile away

Half-Life 3 trademark removed from European database

I think he's saying that the possability is probably the same when it comes to haswell rMBP :(
