Sorry can someone explains what to do with battery?

From one side you cannot work plugged in all the time.

But you cannot do the opposite too (never work with the mac plugged in unless you are recharging the battery): given that the battery life is 1000 cycles this is the quickest way to usure your battery.

I usually works with the notebook plugged in. However sometimes I disconnect it and let the battery goes down to say 10% and then I recharge it.
This is what apple suggest:

For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her notebook on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing. If on the other hand, you use a desktop computer at work, and save a notebook for infrequent travel, Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month.

I found this post from GGJstudios to be really helpful when trying to know what to do with the battery: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/9875442/

This is NOT TRUE!
Read up on how batterys work now days.
What you are saying is accually the worst thing you can do for your battery.

You really shouldn't blurt out these things.

Yeah 4 years takes is toll. There are some ways you can make sure you get the most out of your battery tho.
Here are some good tips if you want to read about how to take care of you battery the best way.

Im still surprised that Apple haven't added a function to set max recharge of the battery to 50% or 80%.
Since many keep their laptops plugged in all the time. This area between those numbers are the best place to keep the battery loaded, to get the most out of its life.

That is why many laptop brands have a function to lock charging to not go over one of those amounts.

Thanks for the advice :). My current MBP has a host of other issues (why I'm replacing it ), but I'll certainly keep this in mind for my new rMBP :)

I had thought it was bad to let it completely discharge since you get all those warnings when it gets close. If nothing else it's probably bad for the other parts of the computer to quit without shutting down properly.

I think it would be so sweet if the rmbp had an IGZO screen - another way to differentiate it from the Air

RE: Battery cycles

We're way off topic, but it's kind of important considering all the misinformation available out there. As has been pointed out, you do not want to completely discharge your battery if you can avoid it. There's nothing to be gained there, except maybe calibration, which in is no longer suggested even by Apple.

I think there's plenty of confusion from statements like this (from Apple's own battery page):

"Lithium-ion polymer batteries need to be used for maximum performance. If you don’t use your device often, be sure to complete a charge cycle at least once a month."

This is a reasonable point, however it should not be interpreted to mean that you should do a full discharge. The statement is that you should complete at least one charge cycle per month. You can accomplish this, for example, by draining the battery to 50% and then recharging it twice.

See Apple's description of a charge cycle:

"A charge cycle means using all of the battery’s power, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a single charge. For instance, you could listen to your iPod for a few hours one day, using half its power, and then recharge it fully. If you did the same thing the next day, it would count as one charge cycle"

Just wanted to clarify that since I think many people see that first statement and think "I should discharge to 0% once a month," which is not what's being said.

And besides all that, has anyone actually measured the difference in battery lifespan depending on the charging/discharging practices used? For all this trouble and concern it better be significant.

If "good" charging/discharging practices adds 6 months to a 5 year battery, is that worth the trouble?

@elchorizo

Thanks, very helpful post. May I just underline the key sentence?

AppleCare support recommends that if you leave your Mac plugged in most of the time, unplug it every 2 or 3 days and run on battery down to somewhere around 50%, then plug it back in. That keeps the electrons moving.

This solve my question.

Ok guys 12 days to go!!! Damn Apple why having the keynote the same day of microsoft and nokia? Why didn't you anticipate your competitors and, most importantly, made us happier with a 15th Oct keynote instead?

And, final question, why everyone does the keynote on tuesday? What's so important with that day?

Will we arrive at 500 pages?

Battery health tips are like tips on brushing your teeth, no matter what you do, you're doing it wrong. :D

We interrupt this public service message about shaving habits and dying kittens to bring you this:

“The Mac line has not been forgotten, as the late-2013 editions of the Macbook Pro and Mac Mini will be announced during the event, according to our sources. Both computers will receive Intel’s Haswell processors as part of their update.”

Seems to be copied word for word from the other article from Sept:

http://currenteditorials.com/2013/09/11/round-two-apples-october-event/

Though I'll still say those guys did nail it. Oct 22nd event, iMac not being part of it.

Edit: Whoops. When I actually clicked the link it turns out they were quoting the article in question. Either way it's still just that one initial source.

2nd week of October, still no Macbook Pro announcement. Omg what is taking so looooooonnnnggggg????..............

Either way, both have been posted in this thread at least 3 or 4 times. Although those not wanting to read through the entire 11k post thread, I can't blame you :)

hi first post, waiting for the haswell mbp has almost driven me crazy. i'm glad to know others (many others) are in the same boat as me. this is turning into a support group for some now.

If you're wondering why the apple event is on Oct 22 and not Oct 15, it may have something to do with this.

Yikes. I guess Skittles really missed the boat--coulda cashed in big time on the iPhone 5C!!

Support group, teetering on the verge of full-blown insane asylum. (Speaking for myself...)

Welcome, in any case! One more can't hurt... :p

Ugh...! Just 12 more days until I never have to see the name "GSPice" on my screen ever again!! ;)

Except that I'm not getting it when it's released. ;)

And wait a sec, do I bug you that much? I agree with most of what you post! :D
