There are so many people here complaining that their 2009/2010 MBPs are "on their last legs" (learning a new expression every day). How can that be if they are supposed to be of a high quality build?
One word; Abuse. (intentional or not).

"Last legs" is a relative term. To me, any Apple product that has earned this label is at least still functioning pretty much normally. I have a closet full of Dells, Toshiba's and HP's that never seemed to have any "legs" at all and died abruptly. R.I.P. :( Contrast that with an old 2008 Girly-book (white polycarbonate) I gave my son-in-law. Though chipped and battle-scarred it still runs like a top.

Or they don't want to be early adopters again like they were for Retina and instead of having to optimize for another resolution (~3200x1800) they're simply going to wait for the 4k IGZO displays in 2014, and jump right to that for the 2014 rMBP, considering the current rMBP's display has a pretty decent resolution as it is. Current MBP: 2800x1800. Availabe IGZO: 3200x1800. They'll likely wait till 4k (~3800x2200) IGZO next year. Ofc, this would mean they don't get to take advantage of IGZO's battery savings this year either.

and early adopt the 4KIGZO display? Thats still counts as early adopting. Apple will no longer be in the lead until they release the new rMBP with equal or better battery life than a Dell machine, IGZO or not.

Those Windows-machines :p, I want to upgrade from a 2009 Dell Studio XPS which I treated very well, but taking it to school every day has taken it's toll: A hinge is about to fail, the screen is full of scratches (cheap plastic cover), particles everywhere between the display and the plastic cover (look like dead pixels but it's actually dust I can't remove), 1 broken USB-port, fan is scratching against something so it begins to screech when it gets hot and finally: 1 hour and half of battery life... (never achieved more than 2 hours and half). 4 years old and it's crippled :D

I'm sure Apple delivers better stuff, hell I'm used to the fact not getting more than 2 hours of battery life so when those fancy new Macbooks arrive and their 9 hours of battery life I tell you I'll use it for at least 5 years and I'll won't whine when it's battery health is at 70%, I'll be happy for as long as the battery gives me at least 3 hours of battery life. :)

Be careful not to make promises you won't keep. :D

Users of Apple products tend to whine about microscopic dings, invisible scratches, and inaudible noises coming from inside. Save your receipts! You might want to return it a few times and demand you get one that arrives hermetically sealed after being assembled by a Foxconn worker on a Monday.

You might be right ;)

I also have an 2011 iMac containing the HD6970m (Apple's is calling them back). I have time till May 2014 but I'm postponing it, I fear I might get my iMac back including some new features like scratches, noises, gaps between screen and case,...

So what do all the upcoming rMBP buyers in here think about the rumors of a 12-inch rMBA? Sounds pretty interesting to me, especially if it replaces the 11 and 13 inch models.

There are so many people here complaining that their 2009/2010 MBPs are "on their last legs" (learning a new expression every day). How can that be if they are supposed to be of a high quality build? I kind of count on using that machine 4-5 years for the money it takes to buy it.
Or have you all put such big strain on them and are using the ****** out of them?

Could you guys please tell me how that can be? Or can I hear some people who are still satisfied with their 2009/2010 machines and are upgrading just for kicks?

I use my MBP13 Mid 2009 every single day, it's my only computer, both at home and at work. So it gets carried around a lot, too.

  • The battery was replaced twice in that time and I'm considering to replace it again since it has dropped below 70% of its original capacity.
  • Last year, the main board failed and had to be replaced, together with the SATA cable.
  • Also, the clutch cover (the black plastic part on the back, part of the display hinge) was broken and had to be replaced
  • Two months ago, the SATA cable was faulty again.
  • Currently, the only thing defect are the rubber feet, that one after the other fell away. Apple told me the only thing they could do was to replace the complete lower part of the laptop for 80 EUR. So, I formed my own rubber feet using Sugru.

AppleCare covered most of the issues, but I'm really looking forward to replace my old workhorse with a new MBPr13.

I had a 2009 15" MBP until I sold it in June. Apple repaired my Superdrive, the MagSafe logic board, the screen, 3 out of 4 rubber feet (but they didn't change the bottom case) and changed the battery for free thanks to Apple Care.
I really think those MBP aged pretty badly.

One of the major issues with my 2009 MBP is the hard drive and SATA cable, neither of which are in the rMBPs. The other is an issue where it often won't respond when I try to wake it forcing me to hard restart. I suspect logic board, but Apple didn't bother replacing it when I still had AppleCare. I also had my MagSafe replaced, but there was a recall for that model year. My 4 year old battery is starting to go bad. In general my MBP was my sole machine that was tossed in a backpack everyday. Early on I was hard on it by not realizing that it takes a bit for the hard drive to spin down when you put it to sleep.

I'm looking at a replacement because I can't keep using a machine that gets the flashing folder every other day. I don't have the time to keep going to Apple nor to take the time to replace the SATA cable myself. I also gamble that it's always the SATA cable and not my hard drive.

I'm hoping that the flash architecture of the rMBP will hold up a little better. I'm also hoping that with better habits that sleep issue doesn't come back (I've seen it in newer models which worries me a bit).

So don't worry about people posting about replacing their four year old machines. Older technology doesn't hold up as well. Also notice that those of us with issues take them everywhere rather than just using them at home or in the office.

A retina MBA sounds wonderful for most day to day activities and I am sure will sell well. However, I'm getting a MBP for audio work so the MBA isn't an option.

I feel like the sweet spot is a 13.5" -14" rMBP. A 12" MBA is still too small. 13" imo should be the cut off spot.

Anyway, is this Haswell refresh dropping this month or what?

I haven't posted in a while as it's Canadian Thanksgiving over here. I've never understood why Americans have their Thanksgiving in November.

Lol I think October is better also, but we created thanksgiving first with the whole pilgrim harvest deal so I think it can be forgiven. That's what I would say if I were a self-righteous american, anyway ;)

Lol, no seriously I was kidding.

I figured I'd jump on the bandwagon, but from a differnt perspective. I have a 4-5 year old non HP/Dell/Gateway windows laptops and it has not had a single problem since I bought it. Still going quite strong, and I'm only planning on upgrading for my own selfish needs, and I'm looking for an HD screen at this point. Then again, I don't treat my tech like it's a rug mat that needs to be stepped on many times a day in order to perform it's duty properly. So I guess my situation doesn't really count ;)

Glare is still too big for me but anyway i have no other choice.
I can't go with Windows / otherOS as it just is not an option for me.
I dislike open source DEs or tiling managers and Windows just sucks. Whenever :apple: kills OSX that's the end for me. If they go ios7 way on OSX i am done guys. That's just abomination.

Yeah there's no real solution. Apple boned people who need true "anti-glare". They took away the Anti-glare option and reduced glare on the glossy model by 60% (I think?) in hopes that it would be a viable replacement I suppose. Great for those who don't need a anti-glare panel (cMBP glare is so bad....) but sucks for those who do.

Lol I think iOS7 is a pile of crap. I don't think they'd change the entire theme over (even after a couple years) but they're certainty trying to integrate it a bit. Things are gonna get messy

Be something if anti-glare returned. We all know it won't, though.

It wouldn't make sense for Apple to drive two different directions on GUI design in OS X and iOS. There are signs of Apple going in the iOS 7 direction even in Mavericks. They will probably go even further next time.

I, for one, am the kind of person to try and offer your customers the best of every option as long as it doesn't put a serious damper on any potential profits or expenses. Then again, apple is probably more forward-thinking than I am. That, or anti-glare was killing their supply costs for some reason.

Looks like I'll be relying even more heavily on third-party designers then. Apple just isn't doin it for me anymore. Waiting patiently for the iOS7 jailbreak. Might be a while

I think it's just them trying to make things simpler. Look at how it no longer says MacBook Pro under the screen. I would love to see it return, but I'd say it is gone for good.

I've been following this thread for a few weeks now, watching the "news" reports about the eminent release of the next MB Pros and I still have no idea what's going on.

Should I wait for an affordable 15.4" Haswell rMBP, or just go ahead now and buy a refurbished rMBP since they probably won't bring retina to the low-end models anyway?

What do you mean by low-end models? I would just wait until the 22nd. The prices on the 15-inch rMBP might drop.

But how much are you willing to pay?

I hope not, otherwise this would be the cataclysmic end of good UX/UI design!

iOS7 is already a major catastrophe but if this plague spreads further to desktops it will be the ultimate end of everything apple has achieved during the last seven years.

This ! Skeumorphism might not be future of design but to be honest it has always worked for me.
This abomination called ios7 vista resembles Windows Vista...It's glassy, it's so white and bright that it burns my eyes ...etc.It just does not work and it certainly does not look good.

Fierro basically I mean are they going to make all macbook pros retina across the board, keeping the same pricing. In other words the lowest-spec 15.4 macbook pro would also have retina and would stay at the current base price of $1,799 (or whatever)... How likely is that?

There is a difference between losing skeuomorphism and completely flattening everything just for its own sake. They could have added subtle design elements to give the icons, menus, etc. some body without going skeouomorphic. There's basically no visual heirarchy in iOS7, and it's really difficult to visually scan things and read from anything but a device that's right up to your face.

Are you referring to the classic MBP with the DVD drive? That is going to be discontinued pretty soon, perhaps as soon as when the Haswell rMBPs come out.

They won't be updating the cMBP at all. So I think you are confused. All MBPs do have Retina, at least the ones that Apple is updating. The classic MBP is just hanging around right now.

14 is the best road to apple make some Money. Its perfect for everyone
