Went to my local Apple store today to exchange my 9 day old 13" rMBP that has developed a hardware fault, and was told both the i5/128 and i5/256 models are out of stock. A definite sign for Haswell on the 22nd?

:apple: iPhone 5 32GB White, rMBP 13" i5/8/256GB, iPad 3 16GB, iPod 5.5G 240GB, Shure SE425's :apple:

No.

I don't care about +/- 1 kilogram -- until I'm at the airport and they're weighing my carry-on, at which time I care about every gram.

Since when do they weigh the carry ons? I travel to Europe regularly and I have had problems many times upon my return because my luggage always gains weight in Europe, but I've never had my carry on weighed. And I always carry on my computer

----------

That would be pretty nice. If they implement 4K next year, I'll be one happy guy.:D

----------

I haven't posted in a while as it's Canadian Thanksgiving over here. I've never understood why Americans have their Thanksgiving in November.

Why do you have yours in October? Is your spread the same as ours? An American thanksgiving is simply awesome. Without question my favorite holiday of the year

Stupid question that came across while planning which type of configuration of rMBP I should get (once it's out):

  • Do I get less battery runtime when I choose a faster processor, due to the greater power consumption of the processor?
  • Do I get more battery runtime when I choose a faster processor, since the processor can perform its tasks faster and can thus go back into a sleep mode after a shorter amount of time?
  • Or is the battey runtime independent of the processor choice, since they all consume the same amount of power due to their same TLP?

It depends. When leaving Greece I've had my carry-on weighed every time, when leaving other countries in Europe I don't remember having my carry on luggage weighed however.

Aren't laptops and cameras allowed on top of the carry-on? Then you could just take them out for weighing.
But mine has never been weighed either (mostly Europe).

Well, the Greek really need every Cent, don't they? :D

This will vary. Under light workloads, the i5 and the i7 should get roughly the same battery life. Under medium/heavier workloads, you would obviously get less battery life but the processor would be able to perform tasks faster.

I wouldn't let the battery weigh too heavily into your decision. It'll have a minimal impact most of the time. But yes, if you are pushing the CPU hard then it will use more battery.

That's news to me. Although I just Googled it and yup, airlines are starting to weigh carry-ons. That's ridiculous. I always just put mine under the seat in front of me. It's not like I'm putting a heavy bag in the bin and am causing a possible safety issue.

I don't like Thanksgiving at all. Hate when it comes!

Yes it works exactly in this way.

Consider the Intel i5 and i7 in the MBA: both have a 15W TDP while the i7 its faster (3.3Ghz with turboboost against 2.6).
Empirically tested, with light workload the difference (both in performance and battery) is negligible. With heavy works the i7 is way quicker, but drain also quicker the battery.
In my opinion the i7 is better: if you need power you don't care at battery consumption and, in any case, your task will be performed faster (more intense but shorter power consumption with a given task). In normal use instead the quicker CPU does not alter power consumption.

On the MBA, I think it is a no-brainer to go with the i7. But on the rMBP, I think that decision is a little more complicated. I'm thinking I will go with the i7, though.

Nope, had my return date extended by the manager, that way I still have a laptop (albeit slightly faulty) until the new rMBP's are in. Fingers crossed!

I'm curious because I also bought a laptop this month, what did he say when extending the warranty etc. did he say until the end of this month? Why did he do it? What did you say to him?

the direct ("bad") way would be this:

Gilmore girl just made everything click. Although I pretty much understood due to my years of film production and the fact that I've watched literally thousands of set ups being lit, Gilmore Girl just made everything easier to comprehend.

I actually think about this the opposite way. The Air's impressive battery life is somewhat less impressive with the i7, which to me feels like compromising on the machine's intended function: long battery life ultra portable. I also worry somewhat about the temperatures the i7 hits in that case without the rMBP's air flow. It spends plenty of time in the 96-98 range at full load. That's inside its spec range, but the reality is that these temperatures may decrease the overall lifespan of the system.

I see the rMBP as being about getting as much processing power as is reasonable in a given form factor, and I would generally always seriously look at the i7 upgrade here.

I'm not sure if that actually makes sense, but it's my thought process. I guess what might really be going on is that I feel like once you get to an i7 MBA you should just go all the way to the rMBP.

i was just looking around checking out prices.

If 4K Monitors are going for 3.5k and are forced into a 32" monitor, what makes people think sharp will sell a 15.6" 4K monitor for a price cheap enough to make its way into a consumer laptop by next year?

I'm highly doubtful. If anything, we should see a smaller resolution IGZO this year or next. I don't expect to see 4K IGZO make its way to consumers, for another 2 to 3 years.

2014 for 3K, 2015 for a 4K most likely.

Because other manufacturers are offering 4K 15" displays *now* -- e.g., Dell M4800 (website says ship date Oct. 24). 4K TV's are not 4K laptop screens.

EDIT -- the Dell is 3200 x 1800 -- not *quite* 4K, but not far from it. Same for Samsung's 13.3".

2nd EDIT -- it appears I somewhat jumped the gun, as some do not consider 3200x1800 16x9 to be "4K". I stand by my original statement, though -- if they are building 3.2Kx1.8K screens today at well below $3500 TV prices, it ain't much of a stretch to expect to see similarly priced 3.8k screens very soon.

XPS 15's got an IGZO to release on October 18th, 3K, but an IGZO.

I'm not sure how it's spread in the US, but K-12 students don't have to go to school on the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend, and everyone gets Monday off of work/school. What's wrong with Thanksgiving? At the least, it's a paid day off.:D

Well, it's probably airlines trying to find another way to charge their customers more.

Waiting for Haswell MBP Mega Thread

I found this video of a 15.6 inch IGZO screen at a Sharp demo somewhere recently. The video has less than 1000 views as of now.

The rep said they are in mass production.

When the guy asked the Sharp representative if they will be used for apple products he said "I cannot say". He did nod "yes" however before shaking his head with the negative response.

He also seemed to confirm they will be around by Christmas time.

The interviewer was really probing the guy for information so I think you guys will like this.

I'm using my Ivy Bridge 15" rMBP at 1920x1200 so, in the seemingly unlikely even the Haswell 15" rMBP will have 4K resolution, I would probably replace my brand new Ivy Bridge rMBP on my next trip to the States. However, I don't expect a further increase in resolution for the rMBPs before 2015 at the earliest.
