What do you guys think about screen reflection ? I find it pretty annoying especially when you are coding and you have an IDE / editor with dark background. I am not ugly as **** but it simply distracts me. While it's true that i use external monitor which does not reflect that much i simply just can't stand panels on MacBooks when i use any IDE with dark background (and no changing it to white / lighter is not an option)...The white color just kills my eyes.

Any solution to this ?

How about this: As the retina is only a refelction of the light reflected of your body/face you should make sure, there is no direct light on you. Try for more indirect lighting. Let the light instead be reflected from a wall farther behind the display so there's more of an ambient lighting than direct harsh light. Is that an option?

I think it's just them trying to make things simpler. Look at how it no longer says MacBook Pro under the screen. I would love to see it return, but I'd say it is gone for good.

I don't think that really has anything to do with why they took it away. They wouldn't have offered it to begin with if they thought it would "complicate" their line-up. I think you over-exemplify apple's obsession with "simple". Although I'm not sure the exact reason why the MacBooks maintained the badge for so long, Apple had been putting their "iPad" and "iPhone" badges on the back of devices for some time. Likely because it is less pretentious.

I think one reason they removed the badges from the rMBP was because the new design led to heat vents in the front, underneath the screen, which would have likely melted the badge over time if they'd kept it there (I've seen pictures of the plastic melting from the heat). And of course, the secondary reasoning could be simply to say they were complying with what they do with the rest of their products.

This ! Skeumorphism might not be future of design but to be honest it has always worked for me.
This abomination called ios7 vista resembles Windows Vista...It's glassy, it's so white and bright that it burns my eyes ...etc.It just does not work and it certainly does not look good.

I think Skeumorphism vs. Flat is preference of style. Although I have many gripes about the issue, and could probably write a thesis over the whole ordeal, I will keep my comment to one short gripe. You simply cannot argue over how much less intuitive iOS7 is, versus iOS6. It's baffling

Are you referring to the classic MBP with the DVD drive? That is going to be discontinued pretty soon, perhaps as soon as when the Haswell rMBPs come out.

They won't be updating the cMBP at all. So I think you are confused. All MBPs do have Retina, at least the ones that Apple is updating. The classic MBP is just hanging around right now.

Yes, definitely confused. You say that all MBPs have retina, but that would mean all cMBPs have retina, because cMBPs are Macbook Pros. So that statement is confusing.

The cMBP is not the low-end model. The cMBP was there long before the rMBP was. It's just an older type of MacBook Pro that will be discontinued soon. The cMBP won't get Retina, let alone updated at all.

Perfect, thanks for clearing that up!

I feel like this is actually a simpler concept than I'm reading it to be. Or, this is completely over my head :D

Thanks for all the (mostly reassuring) answers to my question about the longevity of the MBPs. I just returned from my parallel life outside this thread, (yes, there is such a thing...) and had a lot to read.
So what I take from you is that the MBP is mostly ok if you treat it carefully but also that it definitely is worth to buy some applecare for all the little things that still can go wrong.
By the way: I have (somewhere) a veeeeeery old Windows Laptop that still "runs" XP or maybe even "the millenium edition" (I´m not sure, I haven´t opened it for a long time) and it does it slowly but stable. But I almost never used it because I didn´t like it from the start so that doesn´t really say anything.
I intend to use the Haswell retina as a desktop replacement and buy a nice big screen for the money I save between the 13" and the 15" althought I´d really like a quadcore.
Well, you can´t have everything, right?

Yeah I think he's already assuming that after the 22nd that all the MBP's left will be retina. Which by itself is not confirmed. They may still keep the cMBP's around.

For the most part I prefer the iOS 7 style. Some of the skeuomorphism in iOS 6 and OS X is so ugly in my eyes that it was shocking to see it from the same company that makes the beautiful hardware. I actually remember being surprised when I first saw the Notes program in OS X. The main things I dislike about iOS 7 are unnecessary animations and the new App switching menu. I also dislike the fact that it introduced more lag, but I doubt that was intentional ;) I haven't noticed anything that I would describe as less intuitive than iOS 6, so I don't agree with that. I saw a render of OS X redone in the style of iOS 7. I think it looks much better.

sorry, didn´t mean to cause you a headache, I just think a lot about these things as I like taking pictures so I take notice how light is reflected.

Something that is lighted directly from the direction of a mirror /dark retina will reflect this light very strongly back to the direction of the mirror /retina.

So my thought was: use indirect light and let it reflect more than oneway because this way the light gets weaker and weaker because of the long way it has to go and there is less reflection.

Maybe I´ll try for a picture (please forgive my drawing, there´s a reason why I prefer to take photographs:rolleyes:)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Apple were to come out with a different IGZO resolution screen than their current Retina resolution, wouldn't they have to re-optimize all of their software and wait for third parties to do the same in order to take advantage of an IGZO resolution?
Mac software is resolution independent, though not all of it has been optimized for Retina resolutions.

Correct. It has not been confirmed that Apple will drop the cMBP, but it seems overwhelmingly likely.

Correct. I don't like to make sacrifices either, so I will easily choose the 15" over the 13" despite the money. It is to each their own. I have no need for a bigger display than 15" but for those who do, the 13" might be more suitable.

O.K. then I´ll correct myself: I can´t have everything.
Of yourse I´d love to get the 15" and plug in a bigger screen for Lightroom and the likes but I don´t have the kind of money to buy both the MBP 15" and the big screen.
A laptop as a computer alone doesn´t cut it for me.

So I can´t have everything and need to compromise.

That is true. It could be any number of reasons. But it's gone now anyway. But I agree that it should have definitely remained an option, at least on the 15-inch.

Yeah, that's what I meant. They may or may not be dropped on the 22nd, but they most certainly aren't getting updated. And that's what the other poster was asking about.

I have a 27 inch Dell external monitor that I use with my Macbook Pro. It has a matte coating. If I turn on all the lights in the room and open my window curtains I can still barely see any reflection, even on a black screen. The only noticeable reflections I see are from bright lights shining directly into the screen, and even then it's usually not bad. Meanwhile, I can probably shave using my reflection in my cMBP even with the only light source in my room being my Dell monitor. Probably my biggest gripe with Windows 8 is that it caused a return of glossy mirror screens. A rMBP won't be that bad, but I still hope that a matte option will be available.

Yeah, that really is a more simple solution to the light problem.
But I just loooooove the retina and it´s brillant looks so maybe I´ll do the same
and buy a matte screen so I can have the best of both worlds...

Not moving the rMBP is definitely one way to keep it in nice shape for a while. Just remember to unplug it occasionally so your battery doesn't go bad being plugged in all the time.

Yes, thanks for the reminder, I was planning on reading something on the matter. I will take it to the living room from time to time, so it won´t just run plugged in.

How do the other ones of you who use the MBP with a screen handle the battery issue?

Couldn´t Apple make an option you could choose that would make the battery only suck energy if it falls below say 30% and stop when it reaches say 80%?

Ahaha that's great. Thanks for the photo, universal learning :D

Yeah makes better sense this way :)

I always figured things were better off if the light was shown more so in front of me rather than directly on me, but of course if I'm really trying to get work done I just close the blinds completely and work in darkness. But the people who do that kind of work eventually turn into night time vampire batmen anyway, right?

O.K. then I´ll correct myself: I can´t have everything.

Hah I didn't mean to devalue your comment, that makes very much sense.

Actually, I was wondering if the lowest-priced Macbook Pros would be offered with Retina displays. But since we're assuming that all MBP will have retina from here on out, my basic question is: will there be a low-priced, 15.4" MBP option now? Like, $1600 or so? The base level retina 15.4 is $2199, which is too expensive for me. That's all I was asking.

Went to my local Apple store today to exchange my 9 day old 13" rMBP that has developed a hardware fault, and was told both the i5/128 and i5/256 models are out of stock. A definite sign for Haswell on the 22nd?

:apple: iPhone 5 32GB White, rMBP 13" i5/8/256GB, iPad 3 16GB, iPod 5.5G 240GB, Shure SE425's :apple:

You´re welcome, finally had a use for that drawing app...

Working in the dark is not that good for your eyes, some hidden indirect light even a small one is always better even for vampires and bats

Well, the answer to that is no. The lowest-priced MBPs are a different model entirely, like I informed you of before. The 15-inch Retina MBP may or may not see a price drop, but no way will it go down that low.
