Do I need a dGPU?

Hello experts!

I am excited to order a new 15" rMBP but undecided as to whether I need the dGPU model. I am a graphic designer; I work mostly in InDesign, with typography, and also do some basic image editing in Photoshop / Camera RAW. No gaming, no video editing, no sound recording. Will I benefit from the 750M? Are there any negatives to it (other than $$s)?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

pretty much what i expected but was still hoping for an Iris Pro in the 13 inch. At least it has thunderbolt 2 so i can hook up an external graphics card.
It's nice that it is lighter, thinner and cheaper.
The cheapest 13" rMBP with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD is just $100 more than the cheapest 13" MBA with 8GB RAM and 256 SSD.

You can use TB2 to hook up an external graphics card...how would I do that?

Just canceled my order.

...and changed my shipping to 2-3 days. :p

It's only a day quicker but damn it, I've waited too much already.

HA! Yea I so excited that we did not have to wait until February!! It will be sorta cool to see the 5200+750M performance. I just knew they would throw in the 4600 (glad I was wrong). Im hoping this will last me a good 5 years as well, Apple does make some awesome machines! The wait since April was killing me, lol!

When is everyone merging over to the "I just ordered...." or have you and Im just too lazy to check :D :D

I'm not ready yet. This day has been emotional.

did I make a mistake getting 16gb ram?
its complete over kill for me but I want this machine to last me 5+ years like my early 08 macbook did (and its still going, but lots of beachballs with 4gb ram)

My machine also worked well for the three years I had it, but with AppleCare I was able to get a new logic board and trackpad for it as a means of future-proofing it just before the warranty expired. This, in theory, was going to make it easier to sell when it came time to upgrade. Unfortunately, it was stolen before I had a chance to put that theory to the test, but you see where I'm coming from.

Well, for me, I think I would have to deem it an unnecessary expense., and deal with problems when they arise.

Overkill is better than underkill. For $200, you buy peace of mind. And for that, you can run as many applications you want. You don't even worry about quitting them.

No, just expedited my shipping date. It said October 29 before. Now it's one day earlier. :)

I see. There's no point in expediting mine as I'm only home from Thursday to Sunday. I knew I would not receive mine before Halloween just based on shipping time and the days I would be home. I just hope there are no additional delays as it could mean no Mbp until 11/7.

Too bad they do not ship the store. Was kind of looking forward to picking this up at the Michigan ave Apple Store. No worries - I should ready to pick up my ipad shortly thereafter.

Yeah as soon as they announced that they will be shipping them today, I was elated and was already planning to go to the Apple Store to pick one up right after my classes.

But then disappointment, as always, set in and I have to wait for another week.
Maybe the shipping dates will change and I can get it on Friday? That would be awesome since it leaves me free on the weekend to mess around with it.

But oh well, I'm fine with it arriving Monday. It'll get here when it gets here. No point in worrying about it too much.

Finally got through school, work, and getting caught up on this thread so I can say...

IT'S HERE!!!!!!!!!!

Now the question is when will the stores get them so I can order for pickup? Want my 13" 2.4ghz i5 8gb RAM 256gb SSD!!! Need to give boyfriend back his Lenovo.

Also, what should I do with my mid-2009? I'm pretty sure it needs a new SATA cable and definitely a new battery. It also has recurring issues that I can only figure means logic board. Worth it to get it up and running again? I have a friend who might be able to use the parts to get his working again. Craigslist is low balling me since it doesn't boot currently. There's also Gazelle. I also heard something about Apple doing trade-ins?

But I'm so excited!!!! It's everything I expected. Hopefully the stores have them by the end of the week!

Well here's a belated welcome back. Probably get a new battery and SATA cable, but I would hold off on the logic board until you calculate if it makes sense financially. If more expensive then how much you would get for it, I would leave it, but it's up to you to decide. Maybe you should keep it in case you lose your new rmbp or something.

No mistake, better safe than sorry....

Am I making a mistake if I get 2.3 Ghz, 16GB, and 512GB with iGPU as a BTO and not get the readily valuable one with dGPU? I know they are the same price, but I just do not need the dGPU and I have this belief that it heats up the machine, and turns the fan on frequently with extra power consumption.

Thoughts?!

Available this morning, right now, at the Apple store of HK. I guess i'll skip my lunch today !

coming from the previous rmbp 13" late feb with 256gb, is the new one (with 256gb as well) a big improvement? Only has 2.4ghz so i wonder.

Thanks. I just ordered my 15" with 2.6/16gb/1tb and some posters said it was a waste to upgrade storage when I can easily purchase and upgrade. It did not make sense even if 1tb was available aftermarket for $400 because I would have had to remove the 512gb I had in the drive to install.

I was able to upgrade from 512 to 1tb for $450 using edu discount.

Hi Sara. Sorry, I didn't mean to mislead you: my point was that you could make do with the 512GB drive for now and upgrade later once SSD prices come down. And I'm not sure whether this applies yet to the SSDs found in the new MBPs, but on former models you could place your original hard drive in an enclosure and use it as a nice, compact external drive after installing the new one.

Bear in mind that Apple is selling you that SSD for the total price of $750 + the cost of the stock 256GB drive in the base model. That's pushing $1000 for 1TB of data storage. You're paying for the luxury/convenience of having all that storage at your disposal at all times, on a flash drive. But do you really *need* access to 1TB of information at all times?

For my own needs--which are probably different from yours--512GB is tons of space to have access to on an SSD, and any storage that I need above and beyond that--for instance, my recording sessions/projects/etc.--can easily be stored on traditional CHEAP external hard drives. It's also a bit more secure--I just had my laptop stolen two months ago, but all of my crucial data was backed up on external drives. Had that not been the case, I would probably be typing this from a mental hospital! ;)

Anyway, the bottom line is, if you can afford it, a 1TB drive will be a super nice luxury to have. But in my books it is squarely in the "luxury" category.
