13" 2.8 i7 dual core

Time to show my ignorance.

Been playing with a few specs seeing how prices compare and when I first saw that the top-level processor for the 13" was i7 I assumed it was a quad core .. but very fast .. then I looked properly and saw it's dual core.

I had incorrectly thought that i7 meant quad core, then I did some reading and found out it doesn't, it often does, but in mobile it doesn't. What about the top-level processor in the 13" makes it 'i7', ie in what way is it different from 'i5' given that it's still 2 cores?

I had been trying to convince myself to save a pound of weight and get a 13" but the extra cores come in very handy for some of the stuff I run and Xcode eats RAM for breakfast, lunch, and dinner so I want lots of that too.

Higher clock speed and more cache;

My rMBP arrived at move a couple of hours ago, can't wait to get home to try it out.

I hope everyone gets their shipment earlier than expected! :D

Also, it's great we're still keeping this thread going. Love this thread! :)

Me too. And after all - we're still waiting, aren't we?
It would be nice if many steayed on and told abut their handson experience with their machines to give those who are still waiting something to cling to. Also you shouldn't get of a thread liee this too quickly you moght go cold turkey.:D

I got a shipping notification on mine today...supposed to arrive 10/30...ugh, more waiting for me but in reality, I have no reason to be in a rush.

Oh, it's a 13" i7/16GB/512GB in case anyone else ordered the same and waiting on shipping info.

Waiting for Haswell MBP Mega Thread

The most important thing they have over the i5 is hyper threading. So even if you have two cores, there are FOUR total threads the system can see. This has huge performance benefits since more threads = faster multitasking In a dual core i5, there are two cores but no hyper threading so the system only had two threads to use.

So on the 15inch, even though there are 4 total cores, because of hyper threading, the OS can see eight threads. :)

I think what you say is wrong...
All the 3 available processors have 2 cores, 4 threads and (of course support Hyperthreading).

See this comparison to understand the differences between the 3 models. Most important: i7 has 4MB L3 cache (vs 3MB of i5 model) and base i5 model has 1100GHz for graphics (vs 1200GHz for the upgraded i5 and the i7)

Check the forum, there's a comparison in a post on the performance upgrade you get related with the cost of the upgrade. The most efficient upgrade is to go from the base i5 to the upgraded i5.

Thanks for the update. Mine is the exact same config, glad to see I'm not the only one with that config :)

I ordered it on the 22nd about 3 hours after the event with expedited shipping. We'll see if I receive the good news too.

I changed my original order from the i7 to mid i5 because there just isn't enough difference to warrant the additional cost.

Just booted it up for the first time. Damn it fast compared to my Late 2008 MBP. Display is awesome. Will check out the battery life once it's been recharged fully.

Im planning to get 15'' Retina Macbook Pro. What hardware for some normal use + some gaming on Star Wars The Old Republic (SWTOR) and Star Trek Online (STO) ?

If you just want to make your new MBP like your old, attach an external drive, and make a complete time machine backup. Then put it on your new MBP and restore from that time machine. Then your new rMBP will be 1:1 the same as the old :)

I did that, but for some reason, I feel like the machine is not snappy and fresh as it was before I restore from Time Machine. Is that a possibility or am I obsessed? Please, help as I am thinking of starting over again and just manually transfer files and install apps myself.

Please also tell us what display panel it has..samsung or LG ? You can do this by posting the results of this command run via Terminal:

ioreg -lw0 | grep "EDID" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

15" 2.3/16/512 dGPU arrived. Samsung panel.
Massive difference to my 2008 macbook.

for those still waiting - hang in there... it's worth it :)

You don't want to do this because the hardware is different it can cause problems. Apple recommends using migration assistant.

It could be. When installing/uninstalling etc. etc. it can get slower by time (especially if you're running an old setup). First, before you restore, try going to Disk Utility -> Macintosh HD and click "Repair disk permissions". It can often help a bit.

But when I reinstall, I always do a clean install, and manually drag over the files I need, so there are no slow system files etc. It's pretty easy to do. Just reinstall and mount your Time Machine partition in OSX. Double click it on the desktop, and then click the "Latest" shortcut. Then you'll see the backup and can drag&drop the file to your hard drive.
