Thinking about returning it for the top tier 13"

Why are you having second thoughts? Did you receive it and don't like it? More ram means securing your machine against future apps that may need it. You may not require it, but it's there for you.
How much will the 8GB 13" cost?
If you feel it's more than you can handle, hold on to it for a few more days to gauge the response time. Then return it and get what you need. If you prefer the experience with the 15", buy it again. If not, keep the 13" and know you made the right decision for you.
I still help my parents, but the fee is that they listen to me talk about macs.
Told my parents a year ago that I won't help them with their Win XP systems. Either upgrade or get a mac. They didn't get macs yet but their iPads cover for 90% of their usage

Ordered my middle of the road rMBP from Amazon, no tax. Shipped and will be here Tuesday. 8gb ram and 256gb flash storage. I do not game or do a lot of intensive use. I have a quad Mac mini for that. I am replacing a 2009 MBP. I have a iPad 4 which I am selling. I will also sell my 2009 MBP which still runs fine. Thinking I will do a rMac Mini upon release.
Is it really that cheaper to buy it in china? Also what are you going to do with customs?
I don't think he's buying it from China, customized Macbooks are built in China and shipped from there.

I'll post up if I do when I get mine this eve. Thanks for the info, I didn't realize it was impacting older models. FWIW, I upgraded my 2010 15" MBP to Mavericks on day one and I haven't experienced the issue.
Seems the new 15" rMBP's are not effected by the Mavericks glitch that's hitting the 13" units -- I haven't seen a single 15" freeze report.
That said, I can't think of any reason the 15" MBPs would be immune, and maybe it's just that I've missed 15" problem reports.

Someone on the comments for the MR article thought it might have something to do with having a dGPU. I think there may have been a few mentions of the new 15" models without a dGPU. No need to turn this into another GPU war though
I have 5.2 installed and it's not slow at all. I have all my pictures on a Windows Server box and it's not bad. When I do local editing as well it isn't bad either. I don't keep gigs of pictures on any of my computers though.
