Also as far as boot screen goes, didn't someone recently find out that boot screen is on board now, not the gpu? on newer machines.

I think they found that the entire ROM for the card was on board.

I don't know how important that is. Doesn't mean cards still can't have their own ROMs (the eGPU ones still do), and it doesn't mean a new Mac Pro has to do the same thing.

I'm not sure how things are going with boot screen on newer computers. Newer Macs supposedly support EFI GOP, so in theory they should display boot screens on stock PC Cards for eGPU. But, haven't heard if that is working or not.

I think you underestimate how little work Apple wants to put into a Mac Pro. What you've described is probably more work than Apple wants to put into a Mac Pro.

Then Apple could have done as suggested on MR and other sites.
1. Keep the old case (no retooling)
2. Gut and place parts with up to date specs inside
3. Offer in space grey (I ran of out time and did not change the color of pic below)
4. Place a lighted logo on the side and call it a day!

Apple may come up with something "great" but there is a 50/50 chance they will blow it again!

Space grey is just to appease people who want a colour choice. I personally see zero appeal in that colour on a mac. I love the silver.

As for the tooling for the cMP. I bet you that stuff was scrapped as soon as the trash can was tooled up

I'm not saying they won't. Don't get me wrong.

But the 2013 design was strongly influenced by a desire to support Thunderbolt. I think just assuming that one of the design points of the new Mac Pro is directly to screw with Mac Pro customers is just... not right.

But Thunderbolt could also be the limiting factor on the next Mac Pro unless they figure out how to make it work with PCIe GPUs without breakout cables.

The old design was never going to work with Thunderbolt, at least at the time. That was always never going to happen.

It means that there was never a chance that the 6,1 was going to get a 3rd party upgrade for GPU.

A lot of fanbois here assured us that 3rd parties were going to leap into the breach when the stock GPUs were past their sell by dates.

You are probably correct. Makes no sense for Apple to exclude any segment of "prospective" buyers. Since their ultimate goal is to be the first Trillion dollar company, all sales count. Just make a box that is user upgradeable.
Apple, stay out of the RAM business there are companies that do it better than you will ever do it!

Apple, stay out of the RAID card business there are companies that do it better than you ever did it!

Apple, don't be so %^&!@%! greedy by stuffing the box with things you make that pale in comparison to others. What you do you do very well. :p

TB2 was a limiting factor for the tcMP, with TB3 external capture cards and other peripherals it had enough bandwidth to work properly as on PCIe slots (despite some capture using 16x slots, actually they only need 4x).

I dont see Apple ever seriously considering TB3 for eGPU on the mMP maybe they develop a very custom Thunderbolt equivalent (or buy one eqv from Mellanox) with enough bandwidth to allow full x16 PCIe eGPUs work properly (realize the stackable mMP concept), but this will be very expensive with limited user appeal.

The mMP will be as conservative as they can build, we could see some A1xx cpu inside for security or iOS emulation duties, but surely the eGPUs wont be on the cards as major improvement for mMP.

Conservative Innovations we could see as part of the mMP:

  • A10x cpu (as co-processor) inside or in propietary module
  • Neural Network, DSP, FPGA PCIe (or custom PCIe 16x module) accelerator solutions.
  • PCIe x8 NVMe
  • Truedept camera or TouchID/TouchBar (as TB3 peripheral).
  • Two-Phase passive liquid cooling.

I was watching a live stream a while back from Puget Systems. The boss there mentioned a bunch of stuff in passing while having a casual conversation regarding PC builds. Interesting things mentioned were, threadripper motherboards are showing up with Thunderbolt headers on them, he knows when Thunderbolt will be available in non intel situations but couldn't talk about it due to NDA. But the most interesting thing he mentioned is that he talked about Thunderbolt and I'm sure he mentioned Thunderbolt 4, which he in passing said will be really really fast.

Doesn't the MacBook Pro already include an A10 controller chip for the keyboard's TouchBar?
A stand-alone USB 3.0 keyboard with TouchBar seems like something Phil Schiller & pals might also want
to include with the 2018 modular MacPro.

A TB3 wired keyboard would allow a deeper integration of the Keyboard's security enclave and the system's storage controller (enabling/disabling storage encryption)

after the repeated fiasco of the liquid-cooled G5s i'd say its pretty unlikely we see a liquid-cooled product out of Cupertino for the forseeable future.
Most Apple computers currently use liquid cooling - the MP6,1 is (probably) the only exception.

See the copper tubes for the liquid cooling on an Imac?

I honestly don't remember it being a huge deal. A tiny, tiny number of machines developed leaks, right? And once replacement Power Macs were unavailable, a few lucky folks got Mac Pros instead.

It wasn't anything like the iMac logic boards going bad.

I think a lot of people would be hard pressed to call that an actual liquid cooling system unless they were trying to be pedantic about it.

during the warranty period. since then its been a whole lot more. just take a look at ebay, you'll find maybe a dozen liquid-cooled listings versus hundreds for air-cooled.

{edit} its actually 4 liquid cooled model listings i could find right now.

Count me in as one whose liquid-cooled dual 2.5GHz G5 melted down. Never again, please.

At this point, I'd say that the cMP chassis is looking rather dated, and the nMP's design will forever be mocked. I'm very curious about Apple's mMP plans. I vote for a big aesthetic change breaking from both pasts.

Why does the look of the chassis matter?

It has nothing to do with performance.

Just in time for Ive to screw up the MacPro design again. Can't they keep him away from it this time?

First thing I thought too. But hopefully the project is too far along already.

Just when I thought the Mac Rumours forum was the most negative/depressing part of the internet, it gets taken to a whole new level.
[doublepost=1512806450][/doublepost]I don't mean to be rude but I am big into happiness and positivity and hate negativity. Everyday on here its full of negativeness and complaining.

I greatly apologise but can't we have some happiness here for once.

(yea I know a retread photo I used in 2016)
If they can't, we will! All hands on deck! There is enough surplus of the nMP to use as ammo to keep him at a safe distance until the mMP is completed! :p
