I'm getting tired of reading people talk like they know for a fact exactly what processors Apple will use.
Think like I do.

Are you new to this thread or no? Have you not read about all the speculations that Gurman and Ming Chi Kuo have stated in the last several months? It's called probable reasoning and the fact that mbp sutiable kabylake chips aren't even out yet means that it is very likely that Skylake will be used for the new mbps. If you disagree, show me some credible evidence that Apple is skipping Skylake.

I have four major university assignments due early October. I am currently computerless. Should I cave in?

Ah don't even give that lame excuse. The IPP is a 12.9, hence 13" device that can perfectly handle iOS and has touch screen capabilities. They've already done the hardwork for translating iOS onto a larger device when they made the IPP. Now all they have to do is stop being greedy and offer that capability. But then again, do we really need it?

It's not an excuse, also you can't comapre the IPP to a MBP. The IPP is a consumption device in a bigger frame than your usual tablet that's about it. And yes, some recoding would still need to be done because of different resolutions and different chips. As powerful as the A10 is it's nowhere near the capabilities of a full fledged MBP chip.

Would we need it? Well I can't speak about others but I know I don't and don't even want it. One of the biggest disadvantages of windows 10 for me is that hybrid style. Yeah, it's a lot better than Windows 8 but still the OS has too many compromises and restrictions...something I really don't like.

I would call Apple's translation of iOS to a large-screened device half-assed at best... iOS 9 certainly helped leverage some of the advantage of having a big screen, but there's still way too much wasted potential. My iPad Pro feels like a blown up iPhone to me when I use it.

And thats why I asked, that do we really need it. I mean Apple can do it, but do we need it. I never bought an iPad and never will, tablets just dont make sense in my ecosystem (well the SP4 is a hybrid and I like that) but iOS is just lame on the IPP. Heck even my mother, whos a computer illiterate hates the IPP because she thinks it makes her look dumb tapping apps on that big of a screen. I would just be happy if Apple gave me an OLED or microLED P3 gamut display rather than touch or iOS enabled crap with a great trackpad - as it is already.

Agreed, I don't think we need it either :)

What will happen first?

- Apple reveals the new MacBook Pro (releases it soon after)
- Nintendo reveals the "NX"
- iPhone 8 parts start to leak
- Jay Electronica releases an album
- North America ends one of the most controversial and unsatisfying presidential election races in history (will probably end in almost 50-50)
- Black Friday shoppers fight over low end, off-brand TV
- Tesla delivers their first Model 3

The lack of leaks is starting to make me loose hope. Why has Apple forgotten us?:(

Bottom line is that October is THE month for Apple to announce new MBP's before the end of the year and they will have Skylake. What processor for the 13 inch & 15 inch, no clue.

If they don't announce them in October, then I would be shocked if there was no announcement and release in March as (according to the roadmap), the 45w Kaby Lake processors should be out. Disclaimer, I have no clue if those KL 45w processors are good enough for Apple to put in the new MBP's.

Once thing I'm assured of, keep on reading this thread (and being the peanut gallery with my comments) on my Dell XPS skylake 15 inch laptop that has fantastic battery life.

If there's no October release then I'm gonna give up and hunt for discounted current models and just buy one. Inb4 it comes out in November

It shouldn't be hard to find a typewriter for very cheap. That should let you get the assignments done while you're waiting for the MBP you really want.

I used a typewriter in the previous millennium... Just curious, anybody in this forum use a typewriter in this millennium?

It would help if you described what kind of assignments they were. Obviously computer science assignments would be quite different from simple essays. Also what resources do you have? Is there a library with a computer lab nearby? Do you have an iPad or a newer iPhone?

The real question should be if you're comfortable not having a computer for the next two months (with delays/shipping). I can assure you that almost everything you need to do can at least be temporarily done with an iPad/in the library. Me personally? I'd wait.

iPhones have Pages... maybe invest in a bluetooth keyboard and call it a day?

Seriously, get your work done. If you're only writing a research paper there's really no excuse. If it's more complicated, requiring specialized hardware, your school will have machines you can borrow. Don't let "Hot Newness" be an excuse for procrastination, and don't let that procrastination be an excuse for buying an overpriced antique.

While being a medical student, Im also a freelance playwright. And yes, I use the Olympia SM9 my grandfather used to own, however only for writing plays, never used it for school, as they always require the typeface, font to be Times New Roman.

But tbh I find fountain pen to paper the best experience. And I found typewriting the next best experience, I hate writing on computers, especially the MacBook which is too shallow.

This is so true most of my assignments are research and essay based. Formatting is extremely strick font size, margins, double spacing, ect.

I think I'm going to cave and get a MacBook Air. It'll mostly be used for word processing and research.

Problem is I'm really frugal with money and it kills me inside knowing I'm overpaying for old technology.

Having the best iGPU available means you don't have to use the power hungry dGPU as often and you can have decent battery life even with moderate use. I'm certain Apple would not want to go back to having dGPUs on every model but we'll see if Intel forces them to. I'm sure Apple would prefer to drop that battery murdering and logic board frying dGPU altogether as soon as iGPUs are good enough.

Yet the Dell XPS 15 with I7-6700HQ and a 2gb GTX 960M still gets more battery life then the current 15" Macbook Pro?

I think people are willing to trade off using an iGPU for a dGPU with better graphics.

iGPU is an iGPU at the end of the day, there are laptops now with desktop series GPUs (1060, 70, 80) that still pull decent battery life. Not everyone who wants to buy a 15" "PRO" laptop wants to be stuck with an iGPU.

Boy are you guys going to be surprised when they stick these new M7's in all new macbook "pros". ;)
Not all 45W chips are created equal... The ones destined for the 15" MBP are the ones with Iris Pro 580 graphics. 6770HQ, 6870HQ and 6970HQ are the ones we are looking for. I could only see 6700HQ and 6820HK on Alienwares site. I might have missed something but I don't they would want to use the most expensive processors as they have decent but battery life killing dGPUs anyway.

The problem with that is that it's only the igpu that's different is it not.

If the basic non-Iris igpu has increased in ability by say 30% from current spec in mbp igpu then do people think it's out of the question they use those chips in new models? Especially when apple doesn't have many other options lately and in the foreseeable future.

Do you put a Skylake with Iris that is about 30% boost in graphics from current mbp or do you put a Kaby with basic igpu that is about a 30% boost plus another 10% processing power and efficiency above Skylake.
Or do they put dgpu in all. (probably the least likely but could happen)
(loose and fast numbers above)

As long as apple has some nice stats to put on their pretty little slides for reporters to report on. I don't think they care that much about Iris brand recognition.

NOPE, they have the 6820HK and 6700HQ, thats not Iris Pro GT4e chips, thats intel hd 530 not iris pro 580

Just stop talking about stuff you don't know anything about, not being rude, just please stop.

Please stop talking as though there is no other possibility than Iris.

It's truly foolish. Even worse when some are jumping on people here for their foolish, closed minded views.

I agree. I can't believe how Apple is trying to further innovate the non iPad Pro line. They must be like "hmmm what can we do to the iPad Air 2? Give it four speakers! Nope, that would take away from iPad Pro sales. Give it an Apple Pencil! Nope, that would take away from iPad Pro sales. Wait I got it! Let's just take the new home button on the iPhone 7 and put it in the new iPad Air and we'll say its the best iPad we've ever made. Then we'll wait another year and do that to the iPad Pro.
This sound about right.
But you missed a forced price bump from removing the 64gb.
