I've been picturing the each key being the TouchID portion of the bar. It would be the spot which never changes, and esc works similarly to the home button.

Also, let's stop calling it the "OLED" bar, or "Dynamic" Whatever that Apple wants to call it. Clearly, because it can offer limitless different options on the keyboard, we should call it "The Any Key." Now when something says "press any key to continue" we'll know exactly what to press.

Good evening folks,

I'm a bit out of the loop in terms of rumored specs for the high-end 15-inch Pros. How do we anticipate they will do at gaming through Bootcamp? I love Macs for daily use, and would also enjoy being able to play modern games at 1080p on medium settings if at all possible.

If you can get a PC, then I'd go that route seeing as you can get better GPU and CPU outside of Apple products. Far as what they'll release, probably another sub AMD chip in the 15" that'll be underclocked purposely to fit in their super ultra extravagantly thin MBP.

Hey guys, so I'm scared that UPS/FedEx will cause substantial damage (They've done it a LOT of times to expensive items) if I order to ship to home. Do you guys think it'd be better to select "Store Pickup" when ordering when the new rMBP drops?

Just get pick up pick up in store. Also, if UPS/FedEx are really damaging your items, then you should have hopefully filed claims for them with the vendor.

Siri will take care of that

Thanks for the chuckle. "Siri, escape."

I've ordered expensive laptops from Dell and Lenovo before and they've shipped without issue...but if a local Apple store has the config you want, why wouldn't you get store pickup? It's available to be picked up that day and you don't have to wait for shipping. At least, that's what I did with my (now sold) mid-2015 mbp.
I mean like the two options being 1)Custom Config ship from china to my home 2)Custom Config ship from China to a nearby apple store

I think my UPS/FedEx division here sucks, as packages are always lost and/or damaged. Therefore, I was wondering, do you think it'd be a good idea to ship a custom config to a store to pickup? Plus, would it take longer than shipping to home?

Probably be quicker tbh. I know here in Boston/Dorchester, the UPS/FedEx are pretty good about package care, even making a special trip after hours delivering my 2012 iMac way back when. But I understand a lot of places have issues (former friend once ordered a new toilet from Amazon and they left it in pieces in Brooklyn on her front steps. lol).

would it make MORE sense or LESS sense to place the touch id on the power on key.
it could be like it used to before iphone 7, tapping on the key will activate one function, holding down on it will be used as touch id and pressing the key will initiate startup hibernate or shut down

I don't buy this. The OLED bar is a display in addition to an input device. If the system crashes or you're running some weird drivers off of Boot Camp, your ESC key won't work. This key is much more important to function than FN, as FN just switches between the (no longer existing) embedded shortcuts and the Function keys.

Esc on the Fn key would make sense unless they use it to toggle between different views on the OLED bar. I guess I'll bind the Capslock to esc then, which is already quite common with Vim users.

The OLED bar is a display in addition to an input device.

I imagine the Dynamic Display will have an embedded OS similar to the Secure Element in the iPhone (The Secure Element will also be present in the MacBook in order to power TouchID), obviously present itself as perhaps a USB HID but with a little more robustness than a simple display.

This way, the bar can interface with the SMC to display stuff like a critically low battery even when the unit is off.

I'm not saying we don't need a physical ESC key, I just think they would if they put the proper precautions.

Can you get customized macs directly from the apple store? Or do you need to order it online?

Not trying to roast on you bud, but how can you get something customized at the Apple Store, which is retail and not a manufacturing store. What do you expect, to walk in and say, "Hey link me up with that 5.8 gHz 25" MacBook Pro Pro Plus and throw in a quantum chip as well while you're at it?

Employee: Oh that'll just be a minute sir!

The answer is no, you'll have it to customize it online, wait longer than usual while its made in China, and I dont think you can return customized laptops, AFAI.

I am fairly sure you can do a store pick up on a custom ordered mac and yes they can be returned the same as any other computer.

So who will get what ?
Assuming the choice of standard models being:
  1. base 13"
  2. up 13" model
  3. base 15" (iGPU)
  4. up 15" model (dGPU)
I hesitate between 2, 3, and 4

That wouldn't be legal, the 14 day return policy is valid for all orders be they standard models or customs built to order models.

On the returns policy page it does not say that built to order laptops are exempt from this rule, therefore you can return them.

  1. base 15" (iGPU)
  2. up 15" model (dGPU)

I'm still debating. I don't necessarily want dGPU, i'll be docked 97% of the time and looking to get an eGPU.

But I need that 32 GB and that 512 SSD will be nice (if they follow tradition).

Also chicks love Quad Core i7s so...yeah...

Oh, I actually hoped for:
5. 25th Anniversary edition (15", dGPU)

Would be a nice thing if they'd somehow offer a "special" on Oct 25th, like a 1-day-celebration offer. Yeah, I know they will not, but I have also dreams...
[doublepost=1475134446][/doublepost]Sorry for that question but it is hard to find something in this >1000 pages... Why aren't any i7 quad-cores on the radar? I am sure there is a demand for that although these are significant more expensive than i5.

I'm exactly in the same case : docked 80 or 90 percent of the time.
When docked do you use it closed ?
And a reason why I hesitate on dGPU is to avoid problems/more heating/more fan noise ...

Speaking of this, does anyone still believe they are keeping the FN button on keyboards? I've yet to hear a convincing reason for it. I think we should start getting used to ESC being at the bottom of our keyboards.

The FN button is almost the whole reason I don't use the Apple wireless keyboard while working on a desktop. I use Logic with all manner of modifier key commands ~ ctrl/option/shift/command and that damn FN key gets in the way.

I can understand why people would use it, but I would prefer it to be placed somewhere else out of the way. Hopefully this incoming MBP OLED strip will impact this a bit.

P.s. I use the full size wired Apple keyboard instead with a Mac Porno

I won't entertain anything less than i7 quad-core.

If this new whatever it is is going to be a bit of a let down, I think I'll grab a top spec 2015 15", hopefully at a discount price when (if?) they sell them off to get rid of old stock.
It could turn out to be the last sought after MBP with ports, magsafe, headphones etc!

I've used my 17" for six years and i'd say it was closed lid for about 80% of that. I had to replace the battery last year to get more juice but, otherwise everything is well. The dGPU on this sucker is always on because iGPU can't be used when connected to an external display, but I still game play some games at very very low settings because the 330m is so weak. It generates decent amounts of heat, and the fans spin up but i've never had a problem with it. The screen is superb and the keyboard appears untouched.

I may be more hesitant with one of the dGPU recalled machines but on the non recalled ones, nah I don't worry about it at all.
