I've used my 17" for six years and i'd say it was closed lid for about 80% of that. I had to replace the battery last year to get more juice but, otherwise everything is well. The dGPU on this sucker is always on because iGPU can't be used when connected to an external display, but I still game play some games at very very low settings because the 330m is so weak. It generates decent amounts of heat, and the fans spin up but i've never had a problem with it. The screen is superb and the keyboard appears untouched.

I may be more hesitant with one of the dGPU recalled machines but on the non recalled ones, nah I don't worry about it at all.

I also use it closed most of the time (15" mid 2010 with dGPU), had to change the logic board once (around the beginning, under warranty), not sure if it was due to dGPU or not, maxed out the RAM, 256 SSD and also changed the battery once.
The fans are a bit of an issue sometimes (much better since an internal clean up)
And really looking forward to move to a 4 or 5K external display for the new one.
Plus having just one cable to plug unplug for docking will be great !

So who will get what ?
Assuming the choice of standard models being:
  1. base 13"
  2. up 13" model
  3. base 15" (iGPU)
  4. up 15" model (dGPU)
I hesitate between 2, 3, and 4

For me it has to be 15" model, highest GHZ CPU, dGPU, hopefully 32gb RAM (fingers crossed its an option) and highest storage available. Then add my student discount of £339. I've waited too long to settle for less

Pobably the 2.
13" is enough for me. For anything bigger I just use an external monitor.
But I really need the 16GB Ram. And because I guess 256GB SSD will be the base, I need to upgrade it to 512 GB at least. If it wont have any SD-Card slot I might even consider to go up to 1TB SSD.
i5 would suite my needs I guess. If the i7 would be a real quad core this time, I might consider upgrading to i7 also. Just to be future proof.

I'd like them to decrease the bezels enough to go up an inch in screen size in the same form factor.
I would really like a 4k MBP.

this is something I would like to see too but no rumours support it. I think I read somewhere the footprints were reduced [which is more likely anyway]. On the leaked chassis it didn't appear to be a reduced footprint unless that was the 15" and not 13" as the speakers looked smaller to me.

Personally I think I will be getting a maxed imac and a mid range 13" [or even back to a MacBook if the MBP is a disappointment - needs to be slimmer, lighter and same speed for me to pull the trigger].

In case there wont be a USB 3 port or two, what kind of USB-C hub/adapter would you recommend?
I need to plug in an external HDD, mini-displayport->monitor and sometimes an external drive.

I am fairly sure you can do a store pick up on a custom ordered mac and yes they can be returned the same as any other computer.

Oh that's nice that you can return BTOs.

And as for your first statement, can you tell me how you placed a custom order in the first place. The question before was asking me if you could customize at the Apple Store, which is not possible; online is the only way to do it.

Probably a higher specced 15" with an iGPU
I really have not heard great things about dGPU's on macbook pros and unless they put in a really good one this year i'd rather just get the igpu

The answer is no, you'll have it to customize it online, wait longer than usual while its made in China, and I dont think you can return customized laptops, AFAI.

There is a small number of possible combinations of processor, SSD and RAM options for a given model (e.g. 15" MBP) - perhaps 12. Even if the local Apple store doesn't have something in stock, they will find it elsewhere in the country. You won't have to wait a month for it to come from China.

So you think that if you pre order with some upgraded options from a standard model, it doesn't necessarily take longer to get it ?

order it online, pick up in store. Will take a couple of days more than a standard model to build.
any model can be returned in 14 days.

But if there are now several colours, that 12 needs to be multiplied by the number of colors ..

With the amount of rumours about a refreshed Macbook Air, is there a good chance of one coming out with the 15w Kabylake processors?

If they thin the bezels and give it retina, would you guys be interested in it?

It would basically be a more portable version of the rMBP 13'', as it should be able to be made thinner due to using a 15w processor instead of 28w? It could also omit some of the OLED bar stuff that are on the Pro, so the Pro still has a defining moniker.

I think the rMB 12" would not be made completely obsolete, as it would still be smaller - and it's unique feature, being fanless, would remain? (the 15w Air would still need fans).

Hmm...

So many combinations :) But I don't think apple will offer gold and rose gold color options for mbp, it just doesn't seem like it's gonna happen to me. I do think they'll add a space gray or matte gray option.

I, personally, would be very tempted by this kind of model in its highest specced form (whether it's dubbed pro or air). Only downside would be if it was missing the OLED function-row.

Go ahead and hate me.

That would make far too much sense. Even with the current bezel I would have loved such a machine.

I would certainly be interested in an air if it was like this. In fact, it would be ideal for me - slim with reasonable power and a retina screen.

Any guess what GPU of the MBP 13" will be? I'd be happy with RX 460M.

I'm looking forward to buying a new laptop, and if I'm spending $1500, I'd expect the new machine to be more powerful than my previous piece. My current ASUS laptop which I bought for 600 bucks 2 years ago has Geforce 840M which is only marginally weaker than the Iris Pro 6200.

If the new card will be only 20-25% more powerful than the Iris 6100, it won't cut it for me (not a hardcore gamer, but I like to play games here and there). Might as well go grab the MacBook 12 for portability and start ordering desktop parts.

The 13" model probably won't come with a dGPU mate. Iris 550 Pro only is the best guess.

That's what I thought.

I'll see what they'll release. Right now I'm 50-50 between the MBP 13 or MB 12 (I need a light on the go laptop). If the new MBP 13 won't come with Space Gray then I'll just get the MB 12 and build a desktop :D
