As for rumors, almost every tech publication is reporting October. CNET, 9to5, iMore... plus business journals and others, all saying October. The last week and a half has seen almost everyone say something is coming.

They're all reporting from the same sources though - Gurman and Kuo; and both of those were from some time ago; the silence at the moment is deafening.

They're all reporting from the same sources though - Gurman and Kuo; and both of those were from some time ago; the silence at the moment is deafening.

But, I bet they all point to a single source (rumor/leak). So really, no one has a clue.

I want the general opinion on this. What would you think of Apple and the future of the Mac platform if they just released the rumored products (5K cinema, iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro), with Kuo calling the MBP upgrade "most significant upgrade ever undertaken by Apple", with just a simple press release. The Mac (apart from the bland macOS Sierra in WWDC) hasn't made an appearance on stage since Fall 2015. All recent macs (after the iPhone 6S/iPad Pro intro) have been announced with just press releases. However, I know I would ecstatic about them releasing it however they want, be it a press release or an event. But, It's almost like they are starting to treat it as a niche product. Something that doesn't deserve the massive attention an event would attract. It would be sort of like: "Oh yeah, tell the press we upgraded a significant part of our Mac lineup, and introduced this gorgeous 5K cinema display" while with iOS devices they seem to be more like: "We have to tell the whole world about this". IMO It would further support the idea that Apple is starting to or is already treating it as a second class citizen. I know I may be overthinking it, but a press release for such significant upgrades would make me think all of the above and worry about the future of the lineup. It just gives me that sort of, "Oh yeah, we make macs too" kind of vibe. So, what are your thoughts?

BTW: On a more positive note, I found this on reddit.

SO I'm an Appel Rep. at a large electronic store. As of late we're seeing the quantity dwindle that comes from the manufacturer. This leads me to believe that we're coming to that point and I believe sooner rather than later. My guess? I'd say we're looking at before the earnings report on the 25th.

It may or may not be true, but there it is anyways.

I can't imagine Apple releasing their first major redesign in years of their best-selling Mac without a Keynote with an Ive design video. Just because it dwarfs the iPhone doesn't make it an insignificant business. If anything, they will want to do a Keynote to emphasize that it is still important to them.

That said, John Gruber did say that Apple told him last year they wanted to stop doing October keynotes. Anything is possible.

IMHO The google event and devices are so good that Apple will get scared and not hold an event for the next 20-40 years.
I saw the LS too. Google Assistant is superb, the Pixel phones however.... They outdid themselves designing the ugliest phone of 2016, it's right up there with the LG G5. Jesus christ.

I think it looks like an iPhone 7.

Before some moderator deletes our posts about google, I actually find in really nice looking. Especially the black one. At the end of the day it comes to personal preference. For example I really hate how iphones look.

This thread is much more quite today? why?

Moderators clean-up :D

I want the general opinion on this.

I agree with you.
I mean, it could happen.
If we won't see any invite (for an event that right now exist just in our minds, btw), and this means Apple will update the Macs via press release, I will seriously start worrying about the Mac's future, and consider to switch platform.
I still have the new Razer Blade in my heart...

The problem we have is they seem to be COMPLETELY IGNORING macs.

I still wonder how was Apple able to skip their entire computer line for more than an year. o_O
How difficult could be to stuck new CPUs inside those damn cases?!
The only "updated" Mac is the one that doesn't even need it, and the one that could really be updated now with Kaby Lake.
My God...

the MacBook Pro in the channel meets the needs of the vast majority of people who might want or need the machine.

Yes and I don't (and never did) question this. I believe the current rMBP would suit my needs just fine.
What I do disagree with is Apple's price policy. I am not willing to pay 2500+ € for old (and outdated) hardware.
If Apple had dropped the price of the MBP last year after modestly updating the hardware I would have bought it. But Apple believes they don't need to do that. Fair enough. So I don't need to buy it for that price.
I'm still holding on to my early 2011 MBP (non-retina, 8GB RAM, 500GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD) as it is still working well but I sure could use a new machine. And I will spend the same amount (hopefully soon) on a machine that's worth the money.

I'm not very well-versed on the press releases, but have they ever released that many things via a press release? And have they ever released a newly designed product via press release? I guess the magic accessories were new, just not anything earth-shattering. But those are accessories.

Let's also not forget that last October's hardware press release happened two weeks prior to the fourth quarter earnings call. Something will happen soon.

As far as press release vs. event:

If it's a silent release then I'd buy it and work over the course of the next 3-5 years to migrate to Windows. A redesigned laptop with only a press release! And just 6mo ago we had an event to showcase bands!? That would absolutely be the the death knell of the Mac as far as I'm concerned.

Now how likely is that to happen? Somewhere between zero and never.
