They should have done it today. Announce the new MBP and iMac's or whatever. Do a 2 minute Steve Jobs tribute. Sales would have sky rocketed. I should apply for Apple, I doubt they could afford my brilliant ideas though :D
It is still possible today. Dont forget the differenent time zones. It's 4.39 PM overhere, but it's early in the morning in the US.

I'm considering caving and ordering an iMac if nothing is announced soon. I need a computer by early November.

doubtful, Apple will be courageously pushing people towards the future (one that isn't ready and doesnt work properly!)

I'm sorry but what are you referring to not ready? How do you know that Apple has not worked out all the bugs for USB-C/TB3? And yes, get rid of USB-A legacy crap. And Apple is courages for doing it. You could argue the headphone jack removal from the iPhone 7 was an interesting use due to no inclusion of a non-propriatery port, however this is USB-C and does not compare.

USB-C is ready, non-proprietary, and pretty much accepted as the future standard by every company (including Apple). Apple themselves stated that the rMB was a preview of future laptops; you can bet the rMBP will look similar.

I just want to bounce a few ideas off you guys for what computer (MBP, iMac, Mini) I should recommend based off what might be released in October.

I have this friend of mine who is completely and utterly illiterate when it comes to computers. She just told me that this Christmas she's getting a new computer and asked me to help her select one. Let's just say that the enthusiasm of my response reminded me why I'm single and have so few friends. Considering that she's been pretty happy with a fairly basic mid '13 Air I don't think performance issues would be a real problem. On top of that, she's saying that she might want to go with a desktop this time around. Her budget is unknown, but I'd think that something less than $1,600 would be ideal. I'm debating between the mid tier 21.5" iMac, a mid tier 13" MacBook Pro, and a upper-level Mini (and maybe an Air, written in ranked order).

The iMac is a good choice for anyone who can afford it and wants a desktop. I mean, it's a pretty screen with acceptable performance. Questions: Is the Fusion Drive roughly as good as an SSD? I wouldn't want her new computer to be worse. I'm assuming that the iMac will be updated with the MBP this month, but given the current options I'd say the 2.8GHz, Quad-Core, 8 GB RAM 21" with the 1 TB Fusion drive, which will cost $1,400 before student discount.

The MBP is obviously an option, especially since it's getting updated soon. I think she'd be good with the entry level 13" for $1,300, and the new updates would only make it better. Really, the question is how much of a difference there is between the MBP and the iMac. The smaller form factor of a laptop vs a desktop means the desktop can fit better hardware, but for a very casual user is it very noticeable? The real dilemma is between getting a nice laptop to replace in 3 years, or a desktop that lasts (hopefully) twice as long.

The Mini. Not a good idea right now, I know. My question is about the updates. How likely is it that the Mini will actually become a viable option? I'm talking about a fusion or solid state drive, maybe a quad-core option, Skylake, etc. all together and significantly cheaper than the iMac and MBP. I'd think the Mini would be a great option for someone with solid desk space who doesn't need an amazing screen, but without those updates I just can't justify recommending it to my friend.

So any ideas? Anything I should be looking at in particular? What are the chances of a good update to the Mini? What improvements would really make the iMac better? Do you think this update will focus more on the MBP and make it more appealing relative to other Macs?

Some people take stuff way too seriously...

If you want front-page rumors, then go to the FRONT PAGE. I posted the KabyLake iMac thing here because I got it from the front page of appleinsider.com. The thread is named "Waiting for Skylake MBP thread". NOT "Skylake MBP News thread". Nothing actually dictates that we share news here. Not even the title. We are all literally WAITING FOR SKYLAKE.

It's really not a hard concept. We're in the general vicinity of Macbook Pros, but every online forum goes off-topic once in a while...as if that's a bad thing. That's the funny part.

Yeah, ironically if we only posted regarding skylake we'd be at less then half the pages and a majority of people wouldn't of bothered coming back to this thread (or even site). Me personally, I load this thread more then I check the front page (because I'm a pessimist and don't expect any rumors to be released). So if this thread were to close I would visit the site less.

The last rumor was that kabylake imac that popped up on bestbuy. Honestly, what is there even to talk about in this thread besides rumors and news? if you want to find people to talk to just go outside

Anyways, i am contributing to my own complaints by posting so much. peace

But this is a MBP thread, right? Wouldn't that be off topic?

If she's got an iPhone (4.7" or 5.5" models), and she doesn't need computing on the go, I'd go with the iMac solution and upgrade the drive from a fusion one to a smaller SSD (it would be less capacity, but similar to what would be found in a laptop anyway).

Don't know why so many people expect invites this week.
Not one rumor or serious guess was talking about an early October event/press/release.

Several users, incl. me, posted logic calculated dates for invites > announcements.
None will come this week. Keep calm. Monday/Tuesday is probably the first option for you.

Absolutely.
We should start worrying tho if there are no updates/rumors/most importantly invites until 14th.

How do you know that Apple has worked out the potential bugs with an all USB C machine, you dont. You're speculating exactly the same as I am.

Honestly, you think that Apple is courageous for releasing a pro level laptop with all USB C I/O in October 2016? Seriously? Its old news, these machines are so late to the game that there are already a number of Wintel/Chromebook machines that are all USB C.

Its not about ports anyway its about taking away functionality that is an established standard and replacing it with something that isn't very good or doesnt really function as intended. So far that has been the case with the lightening EarPods and bluetooth connectivity which were supposed to be all we needed to release a 3.5 mm jack lets hope the OLED function keys on the new MacBook Pros are better implemented.

USB-C is ready, non-proprietary, and pretty much accepted as the future standard by every company (including Apple). Apple themselves stated that the rMB was a preview of future laptops; you can bet the rMBP will look similar.

Accepted as the future by Apple but not accepted enough for them to use it instead of a proprietary solution on their mobile devices?

Honestly there would've been far less fuss had they put USB C on the phone when removing the 3.5 mm jack because they would've been replacing an older standard for a modern one. The iPad pro would be far less of a joke as a Pro level machine if they put a USB C port on it but they won't abandon lightning and all those lovely licensing fees ;)

So given we are seemingly unanimous with the bs 27th date, what prediction for the day of release do you all have? (Yes I'm that bored)

As the date was changed only very few days after the original announcement, something spontaneously must have happened. A keynote does not seem to be spontaneously planned. So I call this bs.

I think the 27th is possible, the 24th is possible, the 18-20th is possible.

anyone have a reason to rule out one of these days?

At least you have your iPhone. I am still waiting, despite being told i should get it at release. Most horrible rollout ever. I don't have a good feeling for this rollout, seeing as they cant forecast correctly, we probably will wait months before anything new ships.

2016 MBPs are shipping this month.

thursday october 20th or tuesday october 25th
The earnings call is now on the 25th. did you mean 24th?
