I just want to bounce a few ideas off you guys for what computer (MBP, iMac, Mini) I should recommend based off what might be released in October.
I have this friend of mine who is completely and utterly illiterate when it comes to computers. She just told me that this Christmas she's getting a new computer and asked me to help her select one. Let's just say that the enthusiasm of my response reminded me why I'm single and have so few friends. Considering that she's been pretty happy with a fairly basic mid '13 Air I don't think performance issues would be a real problem. On top of that, she's saying that she might want to go with a desktop this time around. Her budget is unknown, but I'd think that something less than $1,600 would be ideal. I'm debating between the mid tier 21.5" iMac, a mid tier 13" MacBook Pro, and a upper-level Mini (and maybe an Air, written in ranked order).
The iMac is a good choice for anyone who can afford it and wants a desktop. I mean, it's a pretty screen with acceptable performance. Questions: Is the Fusion Drive roughly as good as an SSD? I wouldn't want her new computer to be worse. I'm assuming that the iMac will be updated with the MBP this month, but given the current options I'd say the 2.8GHz, Quad-Core, 8 GB RAM 21" with the 1 TB Fusion drive, which will cost $1,400 before student discount.
The MBP is obviously an option, especially since it's getting updated soon. I think she'd be good with the entry level 13" for $1,300, and the new updates would only make it better. Really, the question is how much of a difference there is between the MBP and the iMac. The smaller form factor of a laptop vs a desktop means the desktop can fit better hardware, but for a very casual user is it very noticeable? The real dilemma is between getting a nice laptop to replace in 3 years, or a desktop that lasts (hopefully) twice as long.
The Mini. Not a good idea right now, I know. My question is about the updates. How likely is it that the Mini will actually become a viable option? I'm talking about a fusion or solid state drive, maybe a quad-core option, Skylake, etc. all together and significantly cheaper than the iMac and MBP. I'd think the Mini would be a great option for someone with solid desk space who doesn't need an amazing screen, but without those updates I just can't justify recommending it to my friend.
So any ideas? Anything I should be looking at in particular? What are the chances of a good update to the Mini? What improvements would really make the iMac better? Do you think this update will focus more on the MBP and make it more appealing relative to other Macs?
