They are not 'iconic'. They will go sooner or later. I don't think there is anything iconic in Apple design and they will remove something if it can be improved on.
If anything is iconic in design it is the Aluminium [yes I talk like Jony too....]

not any more. its going to be ceramic from here on out.

Apple is also very keen on maintaining their identity. In the case of the iPhone, they could have definitely reduced some of the bezel, but if they did, it would look like the android phones.

[doublepost=1475727590][/doublepost]Bezels have not changed much for a long time:

12-inch-macbook-vs-13-inch-macbook-pro-retina.jpg

[doublepost=1475727750][/doublepost]It's also the reason why the Apple Watch isn't round. It'd be difficult to maintain an identity if it's like everything else.

I would say the button is the iconic element on the iPhone - most phones have bezels.

The apple watch isn't round just to create an identification. There is a lot more to design than image, specifically the interface works much better in a more square face. I also prefer this shape to round, even though the traditionalist think it is a travesty.

The reason for a bezel is focus on the screen and allows your eye to be drawn in, and also to give structure. It is not some special Apple feature and you will find them on most screens.
I would suggest it can reduce down to the MacBook size at least and would reduce the footprint slightly. However if the release chassis is real and is the 13" one then there will be no reduced bezel. However if it is the 15" then there is obvious reduction as indicated by the speaker.

I would love this in a matt ceramic. My CC would melt though under the cost........

Plausible, but I'm more willing to bet on a bezel reduction this model year than any other year after 2012 up till now. Why? Because it's purportedly the biggest overhaul of the MBP yet, again quoting Ming.

Plus Bezels of this size will be antiquated soon. If not now, then when? That's the question. Some day they have to go. I mean, can you realistically believe Apple will keep these bezels in 2046, for argument's sake? :p

real question is, will there be an Apple in 2046???

I think most of that is due to limitations in screen technology. The ability to make nearly edge-to-edge screens at low manufacturing cost is still relatively new. Especially with LCDs. Thick bezels have never really looked good and I hope Apple will thin them out if its possible.

There was a person here from a chinese forum that stated only the 15 inch would have the OLED Bar. Now of course Ill take that with a grain of salt, but if thats true what else will Apple really be offering?

That would be a big mistake. The 13" will be the one that sells the most. Hopefully that guy was wrong.

Who knows. Don't forget Apple limited the dual cameras to the 7+ model only. Wouldn't be surprised if they made the OLED touch strip exclusive to the high end 15"...

I know. I think Apple follows a basic design principle: you can tell it's an Apple product from the front and back lol.

I love design in general, and that's why I have such an appreciation for Apple stuff. When I first saw the Apple Watch, everything made so much sense in terms of design. Nowadays, you can instantly tell when someone has an Apple Watch.

Regarding the edge to edge design, you can bet Apple will find a way to make the design their own.

Also don't forget the Newson influence on the Apple Watch - it was huge. Doesn't seem to get mentioned too much, but his signature is all over it.

Apparently the 13' leaked chassis had the OLED cutout above the keyboard.
I am 100% certain that all models will have the oled bar.

who said it was the 13" for definite though..... could be 15" with reduced footprint. Should have a closer look at it........ just did, probably is 13" which would mean either screen size increase, or same bezel / footprint as now.

The funny thing with this whole oled gimmick is the fact, that it will drain battery wheter it's a lot or not is irrevelevant, I'd rather have some real feedback from the functionkeys instead of havingto to use glass for them :(

The good thing is at this point it's pure speculation still holding out hope that this whole thing will be reserved for the top of the line 15inch high premium models.

Since it is a LED display and not all pixels will be lit up all the time the power consumption will be very low. To add, I don't think it will be very high res, and more, a huge factor in power consumption is having to draw complicated graphics in high framerate and resolution. Something that is not the case or needed on the oled bar.

I think that a row of backlit keys has similar power consumption to a OLED bar of that kind mainly because of not having all its pixels draining power when black for example.

I may be very very wrong tho.

Since the OLED bar only makes sense if it is supported by third parties, the incentive must be big enough. And only equipping the 15" doesn't seem to do that.

Thats why I hope they adopt OLED soon, right now it looks like early 2018, because is not only thin but allows for lesser bezels and ofcourse better battery life. Though honestly Im fine with the amount of bezel on the current rMB, and Im sure once scaled to 13/15 sizes, it goings to be far more thinner - pleasing all of us.

It would be a "big mistake", however that depends on how great the OLED bar really is. From what Ive heard, not too happy about it, but will see what Apple has to offer.

Tell me, wouldn't the OLED bar realistically be minimally useful at best?
Memorizing a few keyboard shortcuts would be faster, cheaper, and duplicate most of the functionality.

I think constantly switching contexts is not conducive to functionality. Imagine if the volume up key moved around depending on the app. That's more mental overhead, not less.

It's all about the weight reduction in these next macbook pros, as well as any ability to output to 5k monitors. That's it. Battery life goes to mush in a year to a year and a half anyway, so I don't care about it. Besides, battery life always misleading since I keep multiple tabs, do some coding, etc. It always taxes the battery heavily.

Well that design also had an odd gap for ports, and many concluded that is was a "test" model. We could surely be wrong though, at this point I really dont know, but we will soon! :D

My response is of someone who brought up the user who reiterated rumors on a chinese forum stating that a worker at a factory said the "mold has changed" for the Pro model, with there being no OLED touch strip anymore for the 13" and 2 USB-C instead of 4. When asked whether he was sure it was the Pro and not the rumored 13" Macbook(non Pro), he said it does display the "Pro" on the chassis. Also when asked about OLED on the 15", he said he does not know, as his job is concerned with the 13" assembly only.

I mean it is plausible. The leak we've gotten is what, 5-6 months old? The mold definitely could have changed.

Anyways, unless you have direct influence or are a part of the industrial design of the MBP, then you cannot be 100% certain of anything, else you'd be a top-rated analyst.

We know the chassis leak was from many months ago. How recent was this Chinese forum worker's comment?

If this rumour is true, it is more likely that the OLED bar has been bumped to 2017 or dropped altogether, than they will release it on the 15" only. As someone posted above, the 15" does not sell enough units for its adoption in software.

Are there actual statistics concerning the % of MBPs sold that are 13" vs 15"? Genuinely curious.

Oh and one more thing. 2017 is most likely not a chassis redesign year. 2016 is purported to be the biggest overhaul in terms of design, according to both Gurman and Ming. Hence, if the OLED does not happen in 2016, then it almost certainly wouldn't happen a year after the chassis redesign this year. Food for thought.

Not officially. Understandably sales breakdowns are commercially sensitive. But most anecdotal evidence suggests that the 15" is not a great seller. Of course more people with the 13" probably use it on the move, so it's unsurprising perhaps that many more of those are seen out and about.

I take your point about 2017, but if there have been issues with the OLED bar that mean it is delayed, then they may have no choice, but still need to release some sort of update in 2016.

13'' definitely sells better than the 15''. However mainly industry professionals such as graphic artists buy the 15''. Students like myself usually tend to go towards the 13''. And thats why I think that it may be possible, like the iPhone 7's dual camera, iPhone 6 Plus' OIS...that the 15'' may have this feature as a "Plus Pro" feature if that makes sense. And as industry professionals prefer the 15'', an OLED Bar that changes according to application (e.g. PhotoShop, Illustrator, Lightroom) will be far more useful, applicable to them.

Just my $ 0.02 on this.

Are the new MBPs likely to support Target Display Mode (with upcoming 5k iMacs if necessary)?

I've been holding out on updating both my MBP and iMac until TDM is back in the game...
