Did you get a 2015 or 2016 MacBook? Nothing wrong with those, and currently Apple's only hardware to get shown some luv. If it had a Thunderbolt port i'd look twice.

I got the 2016 Macbook base model, thought about getting the 2015 one but if I'm just going to get my money back eventually I figured why not just get the new one haha. I just got everything set up and it's looking really good, I just hope I don't fall in love with it...

the only thing that i am thinking could go wrong would be the OLED touch bar. everything else shouldnt have an issue. theyve been using touch id for years now, the trackpad isnt new, the keyboard wont be new. the ports are what they are. the OLED could possibly not function after awhile i guess, but i guess i'll take that risk,
And even then we have a 1 year warranty, should there be an "OLEDgate" I'm sure returns towards the end of the 1 year won't be a problem - get the MacBook when it comes out, get it replaced before the warranty expires, best of both worlds

yeah, it will probably be an issue limited to only the first models they make. warranty helps out in that regard

I wonder in which stores/states would the very first models end up being in. If they are indeed launching late october, then the first models have already been produced quite a while back.

I'm guessing no one here is going to heed the advice to never buy a first model year product. :)

You know, maybe I'm just a lucky sod but I've actually never had a problem with (Apple) 1st gen stuff:

  • We bought the Titanium Powerbook back in 2001. It was and is a LOVELY computer. The darn thing is STILL usable, and we haven't replaced a bloody thing!
  • Remember the iMac G4? That old flower pot? A classic, wasn't it? :) My parents bought it right when it was released and it was AWESOME. It basically was the computer I grew up on. We used it almost every day until we bought the plastic MacBook back in '07, and intermittently until we bought the iMac in '12. 1st gen product, not a SINGLE problem. The darn thing STILL works quite well!
  • My mother got the very first iPhone right at release. Again, not a single issue over its (long) life.
  • I got the first iPad as a gift the month it was released and I still use it today. Granted, these days it has all the zippiness of a geriatric mule traversing the Andes, but it still is a functional device. I was just using it to play a game earlier today.
  • I also got the Apple Watch as a birthday gift a little bit after its release. It's a bit early to pass judgement on its longevity and quality, but I've used it every day since I got it and it's been an exceptionally useful companion.

I may just have been an exceptionally lucky person but I've been impressed by the quality and reliability of Apple products, even gen 1 ones. I have absolutely no problem with the idea that this computer is a brand-new design; I've been led to expect only the best.

That, and I have no patience left COME ON APPLE GIVE US OUR MACS!!!!!!

Oh hell no, these guys, they're lifers, they already bought the rMBP 2016. Even if the $#!+ don't come out till March, the chips are on the table! in the pot, all in.

haha!

Not creepin, but I see an Apple Magic Keyboard (hinting you have an iMac) and I see a MacBook Pro Retina 13 inch covered with stickers in the back. Why did you buy this, if you plan on returning it?

You clearly have a computer for school.

You are a bad person.

Kinda but I'll tell you why he bought it, DISAPPEARANCE FACTOR.

I bought a used early 2015 rMB back in June and fell in love with it. Better watch out lol.

Yesterday my unibody macbook slipped and fell from about 2 feet high while it was operating. For those of you who moved on into the 21st century, there is a mechanical HDD inside here. Not sure if I should replace it as I wait for the new macbooks or let it chug along until the day comes.

I don't hear clicks or anything.

As long as the 2008's had it, the sudden motion sensor should have moved the head off the platter to ensure a head crash didn't occur. Never a bad idea to have a TM backup, though.

Maybe you should check drive health via smart tools, have an extended run. if no issue is found: backup at least daily and keep using it.

I think this is about yields. A 5K OLED iMac would not be available in the quantity of the iPhone. Also, the Apple Watch OLED's are much smaller than the iPhone displays and are also produced in a much lower quantity. It makes sense for Apple to do a slow roll-out of OLED across their line-up. First the Watch, then the rMBP keyboard, then the iMac, and finally the iPhone.

The iPhone already has a great display, for OLED to be a definite improvement it absolutely has to have high yields so that QA won't be an expensive endeavour.

I never thought of it that way, frankly.

Actually makes sense from a business standpoint. But if Apple were to put in OLED displays into those 5K iMacs or Thunderbolt Displays, we would have heard some kind of production rumor. All we've heard about OLED so far is that SHARP will be producing them, and we might see IPP w/ OLED in 2018.

But then again, the quantity of these displays and iMacs may be so low in comparison to the IPP and of course iPhones that it doesn't solicit a production rumor.

---New rumors from Chinese supply chain---

According to the latest news from a Chinese forum, the Apple's largest metal casings supplier Taiwan-based Catcher Technology Co., has a 18.3% growth on their Q3 revenue

Apparently this growth is benefited from a large order from Apple :apple:, i.e. the new Macbook pro has been put into mass production, so there is no reason that we can't see the new products before Nov.

Just like Tim said: "Stay tuned."

PS: I will kiss the ass of my new macbook pro , or KICK Tim's ass if nothing's gonna happen.

Well, I finally caved and ordered a fully loaded 15". I found a really great deal at my local Best Buy and I just couldn't pass it up. They actually threw in an external SSD which I can store photos on. It's been a hell of a run, but I've really lost hope at this point. I've been thinking about this for far too long. Apple just doesn't care about this product segment anymore. I just know we'll be disappointed and not see anything until the spring. It's been painful going from event to event without any sign of new machines. I tried my best to cling onto every rumor we could get our hands on, but I mostly just see iPhone news, even rumors about next year's phone. I heavily debated the MB and the iPad Pro but just couldn't make the compromise. Even the iMac seemed like a good choice but Apple's spinning hard drives and high upgrade prices made me weary that I wasn't getting the best bang for my buck. I even shopped around at the various Windows offerings thinking I could stick with Windows 10 for a bit longer. I just really, really wanted a Mac so I could fully integrate with macOS. I guess this'll have to do. So, if you haven't realized by this point, I'm totally joking. I'll never give in. I'll never surrender. I'll wait for this machine or die trying. Keep fighting the good fight, guys and gals.

Sorry but you didn't trick me!

Ah, you beautiful b*strard, I knew you'd never abandon us! Thanks for the laugh though :p

a real traitor here.. :D

I saw Serfue Pro 4 for the first time.. I know it's a good device but never ever expected it to be that good.. now i know the performance of MBP still better of course and also nothing like macOS but for me the most important thing is the display/color accuracy for photo editing and movie watching and i'm surprised how beautiful the display of the Surface Pro 4 is.. even displaymate amazed by it "it's the most accurate displays available on any mobile platform and OS".. for now this $695 device is enough for me. i will miss logic/safari and some other programs and might come back later to mac but for now will save my money to something else..

i just can't believe how beautiful is that display o_O

It seems like the chinese forums talk about actual **** with earnings backing them up, unlike here LOL.
From what I'm seeing, they produce the MBP's unibody through CNC? How certain is it that the growth in revenue was indeed from Apple?

Keep us updated :)

Is that Chinese forum the same one that apparently said the 13 inch wouldn't be getting the OLED bar? I recall reading that somewhere on here...

And if everything is soldered together? Will that factor into your decision to buy?
Ha, well...I may pass on it entirely if it has a soldered SSD at least. I figured everything else (CPU, RAM, GPU) will be soldered to the motherboard. I don't think they'll do something as ridiculous as solder the speakers, display cable, oled bar, or wifi to the motherboard. They'll still need to be repaired by Apple technicians so it can't be 100% un-serviceable. But.. you never know with Jony Ive these days...we will see.

On a different note, it gets real freakin' lonely here at night. 4AM ET here and i'm at my liveliest.

For anyone interested in the performance of the chip they'll likely use in the new 15", this guy talks about it and how the iGPU performs.

I'm still hesitating a lot regarding getting the coming 15 with iGPU or dGPU.
I am not a gamer at all, but do a bit of 3D stuff, (and graphic stuff with mathematica), and also a bit of video editing (and plan to do some more).

I thought the dGPU benefits were mostly for 3D/Gaming aspects, and not so much for video, but here the guy says it is also important for video, is it really the case ?

Note : what pushes me to iGPU is avoiding additional issues, and avoiding additional heat/fan noise.

Depends. If the software makes use of GPU acceleration via OpenCL or similar then yes it would. I believe Apple uses OpenCL in Final Cut Pro X. In fact, they go so far as to say you require an OpenCL-compatible card for FCPX: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202239

Some tasks could benefit a lot, others not at all. So it depends on your workflow and software. If you do some googling you'll find some benchmarks of different graphics cards in video applications. http://fcp.co seems to have a lot of info.

Put it this way. You'll never wish you had less graphics performance.

Put it this way. You'll never wish you had less graphics performance.

That is misleading. Several generations have experienced a higher than normal rate of failure due to gpu problems. They can't handle a full cpu load + full gpu load. They throttle and/or drain the battery, although newer ones aren't as bad. Graphics switching can also be buggy. OpenCL performance in relative terms is also quite different from other things. Integrated may not be significantly slower. It has to be directly compared.

Seems quite good for an hackintosh, just kidding, the thing is,if Intel has this out why not a new Macbook Pro/Air are? Please Apple
