Not anywhere I've lived. Yes, both of those models had crazy wait periods for online orders (like 3-4 weeks, nowhere near iPhone levels) but if you had an Apple store (or 5) near you, it was just a matter of spending 15 minutes online.Hahaha really? There are never shortages on Macbooks/Macbook Pros when they are first launched? Not even when a redesign/new product is launched(retina MBP 2012, Macbook), instead of just a spec update of an existing model?
To say you only need dGPU for FPS games is misleading and untrue. Another example is a city builder game called Cities Skylines which can be very demanding when the city grows large and it has to draw thousands of buildings and cars and people.
I think if you only like simple games and don't do 3D work or video or CAD/GIS or even high-end photography you can get away with an iGPU. The iGPU is good for spreadsheets, databases, programming/coding/web, writing, typesetting/desktop publishing and certain types of data analysis like statistics (SPSS) etc. If you work or plan to work with media (graphics, video, photos), 3D modelling or enjoy gaming then I recommend a dGPU.
I used to have a 17" MBP and when gaming on that it became too hot to touch in places (seriously burn-worthy) but still it never died (the adapter did but not the laptop, you could've fried an egg on that adapter)! The newer rMBPs are much better and the next Skylake rMBP will be much better again because of the shrink in processor fabrication from 28 to 16 mm (AMD). There's a pretty attractive slim laptop with Nvidia 1060 in it, can't remember the brand.
I certainly don't think the cons in having a dGPU outweigh the pros, if there are even any cons anymore anyway. It's either a cost factor or a need factor. If you need it and/or can afford it there's hardly any downside to having it.
[Pre-chorus:]
Oh, baby, look what you started
The temperature's rising in here
Is this gonna happen?
Been waiting and waiting for you to make a move
(woo, oh, oh, oh)
Before I make a move
(woo, oh, oh, oh)
Ah, so the long wait period for the MBP is if we order online for delivery, and if we choose preorder pickup in store, we can get it within a day?Not anywhere I've lived. Go sit in your corner and reflect on what you've just said. Shoo.Who would be amused if Apple *finally* schedules a "let's talk about computers" event on October 27th and subsequently uses it to unveil a range of new iPads and a new productivity powerhouse - the 14 inch MacBook?![]()

Hmm, I see. I meant more of quantity of preordering for store pickup vs. delivery from China. Someone above told me that it'd take quite a while preordering for shipment from China, while preorder in-store pickup availability is quite high? Do you have experience with preorder in-store pickup?I couldn't get a MacBook for quite a while after launch in Australia....... I will be ordering my MBP immediately to avoid any such issues this time round.

Even better if it had Kabylake and the OLED strip...... oh I would laugh and cry at the same time.
as an aside I will probably have the new MBP in my hands before a 128gb black iPhone 7. Why on earth do Apple do this every year and not have the inventory levels to meet demand. Does my head in - the MacBook fiasco as mentioned above was the first time I really got annoyed at Apple.
Let us all prey it doesn't happen with the new MBP but I would put money on it does so order as quick as you can or be prepared to wait a month.

I'm not sure to be honest. I've always just walked in and bought them after checking inventory online. Never pre-ordered a MacBook before. However, I've mostly ever lived in large urban areas in the US where supply is generally high, even for iPhones.Ah, so the long wait period for the MBP is if we order online for delivery, and if we choose preorder pickup in store, we can get it within a day?
Just to reflect my experience with this. I bought my iPad Pro release weekend, no pre-order, along with all the accessories. I imagine this was not the case if you were outside the US or somewhere not NYC or LA.There were a couple of MacBooks available in store on launch day at a flagship store [the one I was in one which didn't have any whatsoever], and then it was hard to get hold of. I can't remember off hand how long it took for decent supply but I would say in months rather than weeks.
Sorry, but I can't actually remember if you could do a pre-order then or not. I will be certainly be trying to order the MBP as soon as possible, as I have little doubt the same will happen.
Remember the lack of pencils and keyboards for the iPad pro 13". That was a wind up too, and there was no way to pre-order one. The Apple staff said just have to come in store on the off chance.
I wasn't that desperate for either the MacBook or the iPad at those times [more like useful tools for me than necessities] but this MBP is actually important now as my workflow is effected by my current tools [I will note the iPad pro has been amazing for me in terms of a digital design device]
- October 25th: Yes I know this is the day for the earnings call but who's to say Apple can't announce the new Macs during the earnings call? What better way to instill faith in investors than announcing a new product during the investor meeting and releasing it soon after. This is not something that hasn't been done before. I've seen many companies announce new products and services during investor meetings.
Or October 31st because it's Halloween and Apple wants to scare the **** out of us with the 15W processor and 1 USB-C port.If we don't see invites go out tomorrow or Tuesday, we can cross October 18th off the list. Luckily, there is still:
- October 20th: (we would need to see invites by Wednesday or Thursday)
- October 24th: This day has been rumored by a couple sites and supposedly the day was revealed by "insiders". I guess we'll find out for sure soon enough but if there is any truth to the rumors, we would need to see invites between this Friday (14th) and next Monday (17th).

- October 27th: We've already discussed some good reasons why the 27th may not be the day but heres a couple reasons why the 27th would be a good move for Apple:
1. If they announce it on the 27th and release it on the 28th, that will put the product on store shelves while the hype is still at its highest point. Meaning more sales.
2. It gives Apple a way to bounce back if the investor meeting results in their stock price dipping.
One of these days has to be correct. As much as I was rooting for a reveal on the 18th, I think I might move my bet to the 24th or 25th.

I've been told that the SMART tool does not really tell you if the drive is prone to fail. It just tells you its either working, or not working when it fails. Pretty useless I guess.Maybe you should check drive health via smart tools, have an extended run. if no issue is found: backup at least daily and keep using it.
Same, man, same. It's funny that if it's around the 27th, that they'd literally also wait until the very end of the launch month to release the MBPs.I hope it's the 18th!
You can somewhat predict that your hard drive is going to fail based on the manufacturer and bad/reallocated sector count.I've been told that the SMART tool does not really tell you if the drive is prone to fail. Are you Serban? Sounds reasonable!Hey you guys!
