I've asked myself that question several times...I'd get a maxed out 2015 15-inch Pro and maybe a 2016 rMB.

Been thinking about it a lot recently. I use a Mac for development and we seem a way off them being able to run full Xcode on iOS but when you see Swift playgrounds being introduced you have to think we are on the way there.

I'm genuinely of the opinion that they couldn't announce iPads and Macs at the same event these days. Particularly Mac notebooks. There is just too much overlap in the way the products are marketed i think.

I have to ask, what are you doing that requires more than 32 GB of RAM? Not trying to be a dick, I am actually curious, how much RAM do you need?

I'm not the perfect example as I'm running a 13" rMBP Late 2012 with a miserable 8GB of RAM but running a couple of IDEs plus some virtual machines adds up really quick, not to mention the hundreds of stack overflow tabs on the browser, especially if using Chrome, it's taxing.

Not that 16GB is not enough, for me is more like give me the option to buy 32GB so I have some headroom for the time being and future-proof the laptop if in the next couple years stuff starts using more and more RAM.

If I were doing important video work, I'd use external drives anyway. If the laptop is lost or stolen, at least I'd still have some of the backup data on external drive.

Plus, as people have said, the USB-C / TB3 would allow for super fast external drives anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about the disk space in the new MBPs.

That wouldn't work for audio work using samples. I honestly need to have access to pretty much the full 1TB library if I'm to do mobile composing and editing work without a lot of headaches. When I say mobile, I mean on an airplane. I can't afford the seats that have room for a laptop + external fast HD. Perhaps one of these new fangled fast 1TB 3.0 USB flash sticks would work. I'd happily pay quite a bit extra to be able to do my work on a plane... and I'd really love to do it without a bunch of stuff sticking out the side. Amazing that I could do that w/my 2008 and it's a real problem on a newer mac.

I know I'm in a vast minority as far as my use case is concerned...

On another point, some of my sessions would certainly eat up a good bit of RAM. I could get away with less, but I'm sure I'd use 32GB if I had it.

You didn't read the thread!
See below:

Music production. The extreme need for ram comes from full orchestral scores with virtual instruments / plugins + real instruments /etc. + a win 10 VM so I can use win only tools would be handy.

You might think that's overkill so check this out to give you an idea of a common setup for this kind of work: http://osxdaily.com/2015/09/05/mac-setup-home-recording-studio/

16 gb just isn't enough to justify the kind of cash I'm going to be investing.

You are not alone brother! We are legion!!

macOS has really clever memory management. You get by with 8GB in normal use just fine beacuse it can compress memory that isn't needed right now. But it also uses a lot of memory if it is available. I have 32GB on my iMac and it usually uses at least 20GB on moderate use. It let's applications use the excess memory as a virtual hard drive to make things really snappy. I'm not 100% of how the memory management actually works but I really haven't had much issues with 6GB on my ancient MBP and I don't have too much unused RAM on my 32GB iMac.

For some memory heavy tasks there just is no way around it. You have to have a lot of memory or you need to use your "slow" SSD. Those tasks are not too common though. Some sort of statistical analysis or complex problem solving I guess.

Actually, Xcode + VM + several dozens of Safari tabs + some other stuff... and 16GB are easily filled :)

Yes! I do electronic music design for Broadway shows, and also spend a lot of time on the plane. Looking forward to not having to drag external drives along with me someday...

Thanks, that is impressive, with so much in this thread it is hard to keep track of everything. I wish I could say I would be using my new laptop to anywhere near that level of performance/demand. I will be doing mostly excel, movie watching, surfing internet and music. Could probably do with a MacBook Air but I love the retina screen and need more ports and bigger screen than a MacBook

Wait...did I miss the news article said that Apple is definitely planning on a Macbook event this month? Or is this all still based on conjecture due to the moving of the Earnings call?

I understand. In my case, 16 GB is good for the 13", but for the 15" I would need 32 GB. Some of the numerical modeling I do (yes, I develop on my laptop when I am on the road) needs about 8 GB/core.

If the new MacBook Pros don't get announced this month I'm going to find out where Tim Cook lives, rush over to his place and......show him the link to this thread so he can see how many people he has turned into madmen for not having released the new MacBook Pros yet.

It's either that, or kidnapping him to the macrumors™ headquarters for interrogation with the help of Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo so that we can release some juicy info about the macs to keep people from going completely insane heheh
