Am I the only one that thinks the Macbook is eventually going to replace the Macbook Air entirely? I mean, the original point of the Air was "Holy **** look how thin this laptop is!" not "Hey look, we made a netbook".

If they can get the costs down on the Macbook bit, it seems to me that the Air just intuitively has a short lifespan.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the product lines are too complex...not sure if Apple cares about that though.

right. I could see the lineup going in 2 directions

line up A (MacBook Air doesn't exist)
rMB - portable - lower cost - lower performance
rMBP - less portable - higher cost - higher performance.

or lineup B(MacBook Air does exist)

low-end(or really upper mid range compared to pcs)
MBA - lower cost - lower performance - moderate mobility

high end
rMB - more portable - lower performance
rMBP - less portable - higher performance.
(Both at higher cost)

My laptop is an Asus from 2008 with 4Gb Ram, so even if the only new feature of the MBP is a redisegned apple's logo I'll buy it :D.

It will be my first Apple's computer, I've used them at work and girlfriend's but never owned one. I've allways been more a PC person but now I feel like changing to Mac, mostly for work (video editing).

Welcome to Apple !!!

Yeah, I also think this justifies an event. To tell the world about the new MacBook Pros with OLED/TouchID and the simplified lineup. I'm really hoping we get these specs/prices:

12" MB 7W CPU (today's MB) $999
14" MB 15W CPU $1199
14" MBP 28W CPU $1399
16" MBP 45W CPU $1899

In that case if woulda made more sense to just refresh the current design with Skylake back in WWDC and bring a whole new design next year... They seriously cannot wait that long just for the cliché of "hey guys new home new looking laptops"

You'd have thought so, maybe plans were changed and the longer game model made sense, and with what appears to be going on with changes all over the place, I wouldn't put it past them. It's been this long, sales are that few and flat what does a few months matter in the grand fanfare of things. Create a vacuum and it will rush to be filled and when the new machine launches, be it this week, or next or in 5 months time - sales are going to spike, reinvigorate the laptop sector and we will all mentally blot out this pain with our shiny new things.

I want to be wrong and I'm prepared already for a) not being disappointed for the long haul (presuming the £ doesnt mean I need to sell an organ to get a new one) and also b) to be amazed in a few weeks time. There doesn't seem to be any grey in the middle.

Oh its on its way out definitely. I dont think its going to get a full redesign with a retina screen etc more likely just a bump to skylake and thunderbolt 3/USB C

I mean this makes sense, and leaving the air as the budget / entry laptop option.
But I really don't see the air being updated without a retina screen. I imagine apple wants retina screen across their entire product line. And they should. The air would behind other ultrabooks if it still has its current display.

This line up looks really nice. I like it.

I think the prices are a bit too lower than we can hope for.
What could apple do to shave off $300 from the rMB they just updated?

also I think you mean 4.5W not 7W.

and the next day and the next day until, until the thread starts talking about November events... then December ones.

I still stand by this being the first launch event in the new auditorium at Campus2 early 2017, shipping March.

"The Mac as the foundation of the company... where this 'new chapter' event comes from"

OR, or, MAYBE....Apple is going to release the Macs in the Campus.....but in October! Maybe they've actually finished building it and have worked to make it LOOK like it's not finished so that they can surprise us all! Because then no one would be able to figure out the release date by building reservations AND they can make a huge DOUBLE announcement for their whole Mac line AND their new campus!!!

Or maybe I've just gone insane. It's one of those two.

The Air may go away, but it will definitely need to be replaced. The difference between the rMB and MBP is huge. There is a very big gap between those laptops. I'm expecting a 13" 15W Kaby Lake rMB to be honest.

That's what I want to see too.

But then there is a problem, the 12" rMB starts at $1300. so this 15w rMB would start at atleast that or higher maybe 1400/ 1500.

a 1400/1500 machine doesn't really replace a 999 machine.
Though maybe apple no longer wants to have a 999 mac. and wants their cheapest mac to start at 1300.
this could drive more iPad pro sales.
I could see this happening

That's a great point about the iPad Pro sales. I wanted to make a point on how Apple likes being thought of as a "luxury" company, and so it's not hard to envision them dropping a 'cheap' laptop like the Air from their lineup.

But the Air is still obviously capturing value and I couldn't think of how they would retain that market segment if they dropped it.

Dell put a 12% discount in all XPS and Inspiron laptops wich finished today. Was this a trick to get buyers right now that we are desperate with no news from the new MBP? :O I was tempted...

The free shipping ends on 27 Oct.

If apple wants be thought of as a luxury company or premium company, it makes sense then. I think over the last 3-4 years the average price of laptops/ultrabooks have gone up. Almost every company has an ultrabook in the $1000 range.

I'm kind of expecting it to be a 14" MacBook, not 13". Nearly the same footprint of the current 13" MacBook Air though.

I also don't think the Air is going away this product cycle. Maybe in 1-2 more cycles.

I had a really weird dream last night.

I think from all the midterm frustration and constant MacRumor checking, I had a dream in which I was working in the Macintosh dep't of Apple, and we were about to go live shortly for an event, and there was Tim Cook standing in front of me, smelling rather very nicely, but berating me for ****ing up the Mac lineup?!?!?!

Am I to blame for all of this?
