I am wondering if here are still people who wants a new thinner and lighter and a more compact 17" Macbook Pro
i think they can make a nice device if they go that way, to keep in the 13" and 15" MBP only the iGPU and into the 17" to put dGPU like 960M or something, 2 usb-c, 1 thunderbolt 3 and with a 10h battery usage at least
but again the history tell us that Apple remove the idea to redesign/update the 17"
Afraid many would thought 17" were too huge, first time I got a 17" laptop I thought it was a monster.
But if they could have a 16" wouldn't be solving issues for both 15" and 17" people? Besides it fits in my bags better (I have a 17" bag)

Oh and btw, Samsung has an 18" tablet;), I guess 17" wasn't that huge after all. It's a Table rather than a lablet.

and remember now that the 13" and 15" are lighter thiner and more compact since 2012, they could make the same treatment for the 17", remove the optical drive glue everything and make it the footprint of the classic 15" MBP

Yes- I am thinking 12/ 14/16 Macbook replaces the whole MBP/ Macbook Air line in March.

If something like that happenes I think they would keep their names, 12 MacBook (mini?) , 14 air, 16 pro.

Or maybe just like iMacs, 12in MacBook, 14in MacBook, and 16in MacBook

Not happening. There would need to be a lot of options, and that's just too confusing to the consumer.

11" air
12" macbook
13" air
13" pro
15" pro

With each size various tiers of storage and cpu speeds. The following makes more sense and is easier to understand:

12" ultra portable
14" dualcore workhorse
16" quadcore workhorse

With each size three level cpu/ storage tiers, mid and high-end tier. (256-512-1tb would be nice imho).

I agree and I don't why cmChimera thinks that it would be confusing.

Even if they do macbook 12 -14 ultrapotable and macbook pro 14 - 16 it will be a clear product line. Exactly the same as now but with 1inch more in each device...

No way. There needs to be at least a consumer line (MB) and a pro line (MBP).

Edit: I do however think Apple will discontinue the MBA in due time.
Didn't Apple seems working on a much more thinner and power-efficient displays right now?

I hope the MBA at least gets an hd display for it's revision. 1440 X 900 is just.....

MBA should see the end of life this gen. The upcoming skylake core m macbook 12 it's going to match the actual MBA performance without throttling and at very good temperatures. Check this video, 2ghz speed no throttling and máx temp 57º C after 3 hours of gaming and benchmarks.

And that's in a SP4... which also has to cool the heat from the screen and battery, on the macbook I guess it will be even cooler. With a 200$ price drop, and other USB-C this machine will be very interesting.

1440x900 is just fine for most people on 13 inch. IPS is long overdue though. However, I don't think you should expect an MBA revision anymore at this point. Most likely it'll be phased out and replaced by the MacBook (perhaps a 13 inch retina MacBook, which would pretty much be the same as a revised MBA).

Interesting--you think that MBA will not be updated for '16 and that '15's are the last gen of mba?

So, only macbooks and macbook pro's?
What is this MBA 15" that has been referred to in some comments? Is it coming next year? Or just recurrent typos?

There is a rumor of thinner MBA 13 and 15 coming in June.

If the MBA is going to be thinner and lighter, then it should be similar or equal to the macbook 12. No point to call them "air" anymore. At the end, if this is true it will be: macbook 12, macbook 13 and macbook 15.

Doesn't make sense for me... unless this rumor is based on a sketch or a prototype that someone saw, and the real screen sizes are 14 and 16.

Then Apple better drop the price way down for the Macbook. Having your lowest price notebook >$1000 would be pretty stupid. As it stands, the 11" and 13" MBA are the entry level machines selling for sub-$1000. They need that price point.

But a newer U chip would be faster too, don't you think?

I actually founded out that U-series chips were very confusing at first, MBA's i7 were actually a different story vs rMBP13's i5 just makes no sense.

The iPad Air is still larger than the iPad Mini...oh wait, MacBook Mini....

I think they will drop it. The design and built process is expensive the first generation, just look at the first macbook air it was 1799$ with only one USB port... they could even let the base model macbook at 900$ and still have profits, because the only thing expensive in it is the screen...

Sure it will be faster but for an entry level device it's not a big deal. The 15W Skylake-U will fit better on the 13-14 "new macbook" or the 15-16
