So I don't really want to wait anymore and will probably get what's available now, but I've been told that buying a rMBP right now is basically "buying a laptop that was first available in 2013".

How accurate is that statement?

About the 15 inch model... if we talk about the CPU and iGPU which are the most important pieces of hardware in a computer, that statement is 100% accurate.

CPU in the rMBP 15 October 2013 model was i7-4750HQ. If you buy it today you will get the i7-4770HQ with exactly the same architecture and technology from 2013 but with 200mhz more. And of course, the same iGPU Iris Pro 5200

What CPU will the new 15 inch model have in your opinion ?

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

What about the 13 inch model?

The 13 uses newer tech broadwell, if you wait for skylake there won't be much difference in CPU performance, but it will be a big jump in graphics performance and power saving. Also new technology as TB3 which could be useful.

Thanks, here : https://www.macrumors.com/2015/09/02/intel-skylake-notebooks-desktops/
They seem to say there is nothing lined up for the 15inch,
do you think we can still expect something with a performance similar to the skylake i7-6700HQ to release early 2016 ?

And they are right, there is nothing announced for the 15 inch... yet. Wait until 6 - 9 January and we will see if intel announces something at CES 2016

I guess that means no possibility of a macbook pro announcement around CES 2016? Unless of course Apple separates the 13"/15" launch dates again next year.

If you're even remotely interested in the 13 inch, wait. The light is actually showing at the end of the tunnel for the 13 inch since all Apple is waiting for is the i7 processor that's suitable for the 13" to be released.... and according to various leaked roadmaps from back in May, they should be coming in January.

15" is up in the air, unfortunately.

I just bought a refurbished MacBook for a minecraft server machine as well filling the gap for me these days. It was Mid-2009 plastic (non-unibody) with removable battery and DDR2 RAMs..

Intel plz.

Looking very forward to next week's CES (Jan 6-9). Hopefully Apple drops us some kind of clue on the launch date. I'd imagine they would want to attract some attention away from all the other laptops announced.

Apple will update the macbook pro at march event, until then Intel will release the HD 580 chip as well
so no worry about that

i don't think so, based on rumours will be in March for Apple watch, and for macbooks updates

No, there are no rumors for MacBook updates. Mark Gurman reported a March event for Apple Watch 2 with a "possible" update for a 4 inch iPhone 6c. Any idea that laptops get updated then too is purely speculation at this point. Quite reasonable speculation perhaps, but it's not anything like the "take it to the bank" status of the Apple Watch 2 rumor.

Its looking more like june or later for the 15" rmbp. I had to really think about waiting to replace my macbook back in september, glad I decided not to wait. But now, its probably better to wait.

How is it looking like June or later again?

Cool, thanks. I hope it's ready by March/April.

Yeah it's definitely 13 inch for me, 15 just seems too much work in terms of portability.

Nah, I think March. MBP was introduced January 2006 so Phil Schiller will come out of the back after Cook talks about Apple Watch II, one more thing style. "You know, ten years ago, we changed the world with the MBP" (play clip of Steve and Intel announcing first MBP). Enter 10th anniversary rMBP with skylake and 32 Gb memory. Ives will talk about how they migrated some of the technology from the MacBook but squeezed in more extreme performance (Thunderbolt 3), a killer dubstep beat in the background. The MBP will sit on stage, driving two of the new 5K cinema displays.

I like your optimism. Maybe they will come out with macbooks as powerful as current macbook pros and macbook pros with xeon and 64gb ram. That would sure stick it to the xps. I would be thrilled if they came out with a 5k display 40-50", I feel like I'm the only one tired of 27" and ready for more screen space.
