There's no way they can have something like this ready and implemented in by the release of this new macbook pro...

Patent was filed back in Q2 2015, April - June 2015. Basically around the time the rMB came out and had its keyboard criticized by everyone.

Should be enough time to implement, imo.

Apple seems to be giving us a lot of stuff lately that's nice to have, but not anything I'd actually pay extra for. Force Touch? Sure, why not. Magic Function Key bar? I'm sure it'll look nice. E-ink keys? Fine, ok, maybe I'll learn the Dvorak keyboard one day. But kind of hard to get excited about any of them.

Yes, that would be me.

Any questions?

Ok I have a question to you based on your sources (secret or open source) or your (intuition) whatever that you may have, will the 15" rMBP have a Skylake chip or is it just a outer body and a cosmetic change for the basic 15" rMBP model ?

Interesting question. Very interesting.

Let me get back to you on that, hopefully by the 28th I should have some info.

Oh cmon you know it, why would you not say it ?? You don't work for Apple neither do you have any deal with Apple. So why not ?

It does have to do with Halloween, but there is always more to it!

Maybe it is a trick on us and he is announcing they are discontinuing the Mac line completely? LOL

I actually called one of my local Apple Stores and needed to ask a question of the business support team for ordering a new laptop next week and the person that answered said we don't know what they are going to talk about next week all we know if there is a keynote. I told him that everyone knows it is for the release of new Macs and he repeated his line about not knowing what was going to be discussed in the keynote. I know they aren't allowed to disclose that but please don't insult my intelligence.

Or was he implying we are about to be tricked next week? LOL

OMG

guRmAN
seRbAN

THIS IS THE TRUTH. We got Gurman banned!!! We're so lucky that you could come back with another account! Naturally we won't tell the mods about this.

While I'm at it, do you know if we are getting a 15" screen in the 13" form factor this time?

Like I said, I should have some fresh info on the 28th. I plan on setting up a titanpad conversation. Please do join.

Can we send you PMs asking about three prototypes of rMBP?

One of the milestones of this post haha! Can't believe so many people signed up for Serban's "sneak peek". And the chaos that followed when somebody deleted the list. Good times, except we didn't have the invites.

don't remind me i still have PTSD from that one.

Had five "serbans" all vying for control in a lawless shared text box. Mods shutting things down. Ridiculous amounts of chaos.

Just warning everyone now, not to buy the 15" with the dGPU. I'm going to buy one for myself and I also have a 2007 MBP with the nvidia 8600M and a 2011 MBP with the AMD 6750M, both of which had quality issues. So if my track record is anything to go by, the dGPU's in the new MBP will have issues too. Sorry guys.

Hmm anyone has different opinion about this?

I've never had a Macbook, and dont know if the iGPU is good enough. And it's weird all dGPU have problems on Mac...

makes a lot of sense. thanks a lot for the detailed response. now i see that people will be comparing my 2016 map to other 2016 models if I decide to sell in the future. I never thought of that.

a lot of people here have been telling me to get the 16gb upgrade but I feel most (if not all) use their MBPs for more professional work such as VMs and CAD programs. the most intensive work I can imagine myself doing at one time is a FCPX render while having iTunes/Spotify playing music and using photoshop to edit a single, under 15 mpx, photo. maybe 20-30 tabs open in safari in another space. do you think I should upgrade to the 16gb for $180?

I also wonder what you are doing? I presume you are getting the 15in so you will get 16gb anyway. but if the base 15in came with 8gb would you upgrade? what programs do you use?

I work in graphic design and web development field. It's not uncommon for me to have more than one Adobe application open, sometimes handling the files that weight gigabytes or contain many hundreds of layers. I also regularly have more than one browser open, a terminal with a couple of sessions, a code editor and a bunch of task managers and note taking apps (I use at least 5 of those regularly). I'm also a big fan of small utility apps like color pickers, password managers, screenshot takers etc. I have a good dozen of them on most of the time.

My 8GB machine handles most of that just fine. It may 'think' for few seconds with really heavy files, but the only file that made me kind of crazy lately was 4GB in size and contained near a hundred of hi-res smart objects. In daily use my 2012 rMBP15 feels neither old, not incapable.

I'm not sure if I'll be getting a new MBP actually. I'm currently waiting for the whole mac lineup to be released to see where I'll be going from here.

Will I be getting 16GB? Yes. In fact I'm not dismissing the idea of more. Not because I really need them. I could do just fine with 8GB for a couple more years at least. But it would be nice to have extra power those few moments I actually need it. Also few hundred dollars projected on 4-5 years of use do not seem like too much of a difference to me.

That's my situation and my considerations though. Your mileage may vary. For the usage you described that extra RAM does not seem absolutely essential. But 180$ isn't that huge of a sum either. It may or not be worth the extra performance padding and saved worries for you.

Rumoured, based on the specs from wikipedia:
- 2015 launch
- Chips will use the 14 nm process node. Expect some decent battery life
- Support for DDR4 memory
- Support for PCIe 4.0

I also think that this will be the model where dGPUs and Apple will part ways in notebooks. I don't think we'll see a dedicated GPU, even as a BTO option.

What are your thoughts?
lol

what if Apple discounted the whole Mac lineup. (i know that won't happen since iOS development is Mac only but let's imagine). would you buy the current MacBook Pro knowing there won't be a successor?

Yeah probably. I could probably get 5-6 years out of it, at which point most vendors will rewrite their software for Windows.

Plus OS X could probably be used as a VM on Windows. This is already possible today but the existing hypervisors need to be patched before they let you install OS X. This could be done out of the box.

Yes, it would still be the best laptop available on the market for my needs. When it got to the point of buying a new one, I'd pick the best laptop available at that time, regardless of the brand.
