Look, if there's a way in the OS where you can permanently kill the dedicated GPU then I'd be all for buying a dGPU model. However, the only options are 100% dGPU or Automatic switching. There's no OFF option.

In the automatic setting, you can be sitting on mac rumors or reddit and you get a small screen shudder and blip with the popup from gfxstatus that says the the dedicated GPU just kicked on randomly. Or when you're using youtube or some video player and the dGPU disengages and re engages and that kills the video?

I've had multiple dGPU MBPs and this is the first time the iGPU is going to be fast enough for my needs. I plan on buying a base rMBP with iGPU and upgrading to 1TB SSD and 32GB ram if that's an option.

Erm no. On my maxed out 15" rmbp, I use gfxcatdtatus, and when I'm out on battery I'm on integrated only, meaning the dGPU is completely off. When I'm connected to power and/or need the GPU, I just click on the menu bar and click automatic. Simples.

That option is hit or miss sometimes. When 2012 rMBP's dGPU was failing, setting it to integrated only mode helped with the crashing but sometimes gfxstatus still wont prevent it from kicking on and kernal panic the OS. It's a good alternative but still not perfect.

Why can't we have a stupid "off" function in the OS.

Im interested in this too.
So there is a way to completely disable the dGPU ? You are not clearly clarifying this.
We need the "disable the dGPU till I activate it again" - button ;-)

Well I coded encrypted iOS and PHP client server apps, did you?
It's not about encryption, it's about the permission you agree to the companies what they can do with your data and private info. For example read https://www.theguardian.com/technol...p-collecting-whatsapp-phone-numbers-user-data

LOL??? like really, Exchange is the only thing you will do. The phone is invented to let you live in Google. Here s a quote from Slashdot: “you will be running Android 7.1 Nougat, but Google almost wants you to forget that. Instead, it wants you to feel like you are using a Google phone. Google branding, Google chat apps (Duo and Allo), Google Photos and Google Cloud and, of course, the all new Google Assistant.”
Well if you wanna live in the Google datamining eco system, go ahead with a Chromebook, a Pixel etc. But maybe actually use a search engine to look for privacy concerns for all Google apps.

But now I will stop commenting on off topics and go back to what this topic is about!!

I want the new MBPro with the new Cinema Display :D

I get that, my point is that the device doesn't matter. It's the service that matters. I can get a Pixel phone and use the same email providers, Google won't snoop into my other providers emails, just gmail. Which guess what, they already do if you have your gmail account on an iOS device!

There is a third party application you can install that kind of gives you control over your GPU. There are options to keep it on dedicated or integrated only. However, it's not perfect. It works most of the time but it's also hit or miss sometimes.

Notice why he removed the graphics switching based on power source permanently? That used to cause all sorts of problems with crashing applications and what not. There was never a fix so he just removed it. There really should be an option on the OS level to give better control over the GPU.

outside of macbook pro redesign would like there to be a iTunes redesign. the only application i have issues with on macOS. any chances of that happening?

I'm an professional software developer and I care about it.
I am a professional developer too and I don't see where it could be more useful to have a camera centered in any usage. It's not like you are not getting a camera at all. The screen in my opinion is more useful, and if position of camera is so desired then have a look at the lenovo yoga 910. It is possible to have smaller bezels and a useful camera at the same time.

I've got colleagues who are in the US its useful to be able to meet with them over Skype. Its laughable to suggest that is an unusual use case in professional environments.

I don't doubt that its possible to have smaller display bezels and have a functional webcam but the Dell XPS isn't a good example of it. They've gimped the webcam on that machine , it has other serious issues aswell.

I can second this, although i'm only a professional idiot.
I have an EFF sticker over my front webcam, pretty common to see that here in San Francisco. That said, it's becoming quite common for me to conduct business using video chat.

Do people seriously look at a rMBP and think "this thing has huge bezels"?

iMac, Air, yes, I get that. But rMBP? Do I have some sort of mini-bezel-limited-edition?

Well if you compare it to the competition, yes I do think it has huge bezels.

Currently own a 13 Retina and thinking to get more involved with coding using Xcode. Is there a huge benefit of having the 15"? I understand that screen real estate is king but 2" - is that really noticeable?

Love the 13" footprint.
