I replied to a similar post on Reddit, but the trade-offs Razer has made to get those specs in that chassis are such that Apple won't do it. They run hot and loud. Apple doesn't care about gaming enough to be OK with shipping a machine that is loud in a traditional business or classroom setting.

I had both the 2014 and 2015 Blades when they came out, and ended up returning for those reasons (they claimed it got better with that newer generation, but it was the difference between a Boeing and a Cessna taking off), as well as generally poorer quality control than I experience with Apple.

Yeah...those are always the trade offs. But for students like me, these 2000€+ prices are a huge investment and I just want to be sure that I get a laptop which, performance wise (4k editing) will not be obsolete in a year or two. And there's quite a difference between these GPU's.

Do any of you guys consider The Razer Blade?

I have considered the Razer Blade, but it's just not compatible with me:
  • It's not any different in terms of the spec/price ratio. I'm getting a 15" with 512 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM. That comes out to $2,299, which is EXACTLY the price of the corresponding MacBook Pro (with the old specs).
  • The battery life of the MacBook is almost TWICE as long. No contest there.
  • MacOS and the Apple ecosystem is far superior IMO. It's worth at least a few hundred dollars to me.
  • The performance of the MacBook Pro is actually much better. And that's when we're comparing the new Razer Blade to a computer that is using Haswell (see images below). I don't need the GPU to be amazing, all I need is raw horsepower.
I'm sure most of us have shopped around during this wait. Just researching possible alternatives to the Mac taught me so much about computers. But when it comes to buying a high-quality, versatile workhorse Apple truly is the best.

A question for all music producers: what configuration do you plan to get based on our current speculations?

I am a music producer too and i'm so confused. I'm using my late 2012 base 13" mbp, i7 quad core with 8 gb, no dGPU. I wonder if the new 15" with i5 dual core will be totally different or just a little bit more powerful.

I have own the rMBP 15 while I have also been using the dell xps 15 recently. Let me tell you, a look at the screen and you forget about the chin and the retina bs apple sells you. The camera though not centered is not useless any means and much better in quality than the one on my MBP. The dell xps as a product is much ahead of the current MBs. Hoping, come 27th Apple will up their game as well.

I haven't used the latest XPS machines directly, but have read that they're pretty decent machines except for two things. One, reviews say the trackpad still can't compete to trackpads of Macs released a decade ago. And two, macOS is still better then Windows. As for the overall design/aesthetics of the machine, I'd still take the original unibody models over anything Dell has released. It's not to say that the Dell's aren't good, it's just that the Macs are that much better.

Any chance the Time Capsule will get a refresh as well? The current model is from 2013...and mine is from 2010 and now randomly stops giving access to the internet.

Found this image on Twitter, is it true that the 15 inch model never got the Broadwell update and the 13 inch did have the update?

i have a new question from your experiences.

I use my late 2008 and have updated OS's since 10.2, should I do a fresh Installs or just use Time Machine?

I use to do clean install's from 8.1 to 10.2 but have gotten lazy on how time consuming it can be, even though I used to enjoy it.

What do you all think?

Thanks:)

Yes. If you go to buy a 15" today, it will have Haswell inside. But to understand why this isn't so simple, look a few posts up to see the benchmarks showing a Haswell MBP outperforming a Skylake Razer Blade.

Time Machine is fine. Mine goes back to 2005 and has gone across a PowerBook G4, intel iMac, and hackintosh.

They tend to only update them when there is a new wireless spec out. That said, the "mesh" style of Wifi network seems to be in vogue lately (ala Google Wifi) so Apple might transition to something similar. That may not affect Time Capsule, though.

Yep, they're skipping broadwell on the 15 and going straight to Skylake (unless they do go to broadwell and want the internet to instantly implode). Though this brings up a good point. They may skip skylake and take the 13" straight to Kaby Lake. The 13" has been on a newer architecture for a couple years now then the 15". No reason to think they wouldn't keep that going.

They can't, unless they got an advance shipment somehow from Intel.

I'm planning on doing a clean install, then using time machine to transfer specific files after.

I always thought that the 13 inch MPB also had the Haswell architecture and not the "newer" Broadwell. *reads again the 1264 pages*

Ah, I see. No, they actually did update the 13" (I think in 2015?). Intel releases the processors for the 15" lather than they do those used in the 13". Broadwell came too late for the 2015 update, so Apple decided to just ride it out for another year.

All 15 inches have quad core im pretty sure

Go big or go home ... rMBP 17".

Not sure if you're joking or not, but it's something I'd be torn about if it comes up. I'd love that extra screen real estate, and the potential of what else you could fit inside the body (is 2 inches enough for an additional SSD?). But I do edit a lot on a train, so I wonder if that would become impossible.

I apologize in advance for going off topic, but it seems like many people here use virtual machines.

I'm coming back to Mac after a bit and I've been checking out the apps I'll need. I'm a have virtual machine user and use VMware Workstation on my Windows and Linux hosts. I'd like to stay in the VMware world with Fusion since I think that will be the easiest way to move my machines around and while reading I came across an article saying that VMware Fusion can work with Windows installed through Boot Camp. They make it sound like I can install Windows 10 on the Mac using Boot Camp and then access that through Fusion. This would allow me to either use Boot Camp or Fusion to access that installation going forward. Has anyone used this feature and can comment on how well it works? I would love this feature if it is working as I understand it.
