Don't think the 13 inch will ship with 16gb RAM standard tbh

I'm basically going by previous major changes.

Retina came with 8 GB standard
Before that, unibody was 4 GB standard
Before that, it was 2 GB standard

If apple continues the pattern hopefully it will be 16 GB standard.

However, the Fn button serves no particular function on a Mac once you get rid of the F keys. My bet then is that the Esc is moving to where the current Fn key sits.

Interesting idea, but I doubt the Fn key will be removed. It will still have a purpose – depending on your setting, pressing it will make the bar display plain function keys or the app-specific widgets.

I really hope this is true and the entry-level 13" comes with 16GB / 256GB standard.

I like this. My only small point of contention is that it does alter the standard English keyboard, as tilde is standardized at that position even in DVORAK. And software that makes use of the F keys? Do you expect people to mime at their webcams and get a response?

Maybe, I just think people expecting more bang for their buck configuration wise might be disappointed. Apple won't think twice about cheaping out on some of the specs if it will protect their margins.

Look at the last update to the 21.5 inch iMac. 4k display with a 5400 rpm hard drive and no discrete graphics option!

You are missing the point. The Esc has more critical function than the Fn or F keys. It seems more plausible to put a Fn switch on the Touchbar than it does to put Esc there unless you can guarantee Touchbar stability. There's also an ergonomic reason why the shift buttons are longer and inserting a tilde there isn't a solution any sane typist would approve.

These days it should really come with a 512GB SSD standard. After all, it is a "Pro" machine.

But this is Apple, so I understand I'm being crazy for assuming something so logical.

They put 5400rpm HDDs in 4k iMacs. TBH I wouldn't even be surprised if they still made a 128GB 13" base model.

It's all about increasing the average sale price without changing the base price. Foot in door sales tactics are one of Apple's many strong points.

It does support 64GB but it is only configurable from Apple up to 32 GB. The 5K iMac still have user upgradeable RAM so you can add more from third party suppliers.

Yep. That machine is the Mac version of the 16gb iPhone.

Go to your nearest university. What computer are students using? Probably Apple and 9 times out of 10, it's a 13" MacBook Pro. They are far from Pro machines. The 15" is the only one that holds this title and the specs show.

Based on my recent experience it is the 13" Air. I agree with you that the 15" is the only MacBook deserving of the "Pro" moniker.

It would be a really awkward position for the Esc, but I guess we'll get used to it. Not having a US keyboard right now already puts the backtick to the right of the left Shift, so the §± key would be a good candidate for Esc, but I was thinking to get a US keyboard in my next MacBook especially for the upper position of the backtick/tilde.

By the way, isn't it awkward to only have a Delete key rather than Backspace (US keyboards)?

Tbh, theres a beautiful feeling in waiting for something.

And I don't want this feeling to stop. I JUST LOVE IT! (I call this the MacBook Pro Syndrome)

So I've decided, I'll watch the keynote, and have my first look at the new MacBook Pro in 2026.

And because:

On a Mac Delete works the same as Backspace on PC. If you press Fn and Delete then it does the function of a PC's Delete button.

But you probably already know this and I just misunderstood your point

I'm thinking the OLED row is thicker than rumored. Why limit it to being so thin? Hajek's rendering is half the size of a keyboard key. I think we'll have plenty of room to move around. The taptic engine is going to make it a lot of fun.

Besides the productivity and photo/video apps, I'm hoping for a gaming demo (both to show off Metal/the GPU and the OLED bar). If Blizzard supports the bar for WoW by putting spells or something cool on it, that'd be awesome.

As dedicated as this thread is, you'd be hard pressed to find ANYONE drop $6k for a laptop. I'm going with a maxed out machine, but wouldn't spend over $5k all in (with AppleCare). Apple recognizes there are people like that, but they also recognize that those are VERY FEW and not profitable to pursue.

There are a lot of people who use macbooks as a workhorse. I've got parallels running with several eclipse IDEs open, some pdfs, tons of tabs, and often all 7 slots in my usb expander have stuff plugged in doing stuff. I am almost always having all 16gb memory used with a lot of swap space used. If I could get a macbook with 64gb or 128gb ram and more cores it would make financial sense to upgrade because I rely on this machine to earn money. Getting an imac or a mac pro is out of the question because I travel a lot and often work on things that need to be connected to with a laptop away from my desk. Apple needs to stop jerking us around with these fake "pro" laptops or else we will be forced to use ugly pc laptops.

Look at what you can get in a 15" xeon thinkpad- 64gb ram, quad core 3.7GHz xeon, and 2 1-terabyte pci ssds in raid0, all for $3300. This blows away a loaded macbook pro for the same price. Apple needs to do something.
