When are mac usually available for store pickup after an event ?
Also are they almost garanteed to go on backorder ?

In some cases they've been available directly after the event. We could certainly see an immediate release after the event or they may push the release to Friday to go along with the Nike Apple Watch and possibly the Airpods. Either way, I think its fairly safe to assume that the new Macs could be shipping to stores right now.

As for backorder, the supply will no doubt be low at launch but I don't think we'll see widespread sellouts. Apple has missed the back to school rush and the holiday season hasn't hit yet. Not to mention, the rate that most people update their laptops is much less frequent than a tablet or phone (especially for premium priced laptops). My guess is as long as your OK with buying a stock configuration (13" or 15"), you should be able to walk out with one on day 1 no problem.

I'm with you on that, and am really hoping they don't go crazy with the prices. As you can see some people here aren't expecting that because of how high some of the previous models had been. Difference is they're not selling something better than what exists on the market. The retina MacBook and MacBook Air were the thinnest lightest laptops. The retina MacBook Pro had the best screen. Now the selling point is the Oled bar? I'm not sure that'll warrant the kind of price hike people are saying.

macOS alone puts them above the competition. They're not going to price themselves on the same level. There'll be an Apple premium. Always has been, always will be.

And at the current prices they'd still be priced above the competition. People love to grab their ankles for Apple

That's the kind of casual bending over I'm talking about some people surprisingly being ok with.

Lolwut? How am I ok with whatever Apple's pricing is if i've been waiting for over a year much like everyone else for the hottest thinnest model. I won't pay something stupid like $2600 for the base (i'm after the 15"). Infact if it's over $2100-$2200 with tax/edu discount I might have to reconsider. The value prop is more than just about the specs, if you want GHz and twin GTX 1080 then go and grab a Sager, BUT imo waiting over a year+ to update them without changing the price is kind of a kick to the nuts. Not wrong (morally), but it sure feels like a kick in the nuts lol.

I see you're new here (not sure if lurking) so I'll repost this, I made it back in July (there are a few others around that time frame as well). THIS sums up how I feel about Apple charging top $$$$ for outdated stuff, so please, pleeeasseee, tell me again how i'm happy with Apple at the moment lol.

Yeah that's not going to happen. The current rMB is $1299. Like @shareef777 said, best case is $1499 for the new base rMBP.

True. Maybe we'll see a price drop for the MacBook similar to when Apple dropped the base price of the MacBook Pro. IMO having the MacBook at $1299 makes absolutely no sense. It's a $999 laptop at best and even that may be a little generous, especially at only 12". Having a $1200 13" MacBook Pro without the OLED bar would be the perfect bridge between the MacBook and the pro line.

The market is a lot different than it was back in 2008 and 2012. Slapping an Apple symbol on a product doesn't guarantee success anymore like it used to. The Apple tax will always exists but the price has to be competitive if they want people other than their dedicated fans to buy this thing.

The fact that Apple skipped Broadwell for the 15" and maintained the high pricing says otherwise. Apple just doesn't give a F about the competition or how we feel. They think they can charge more and we'd pay it so they will charge more. And we'll pay so they'll continue this cycle.

Look at the 9.7" iPad. $100 price increase and they continue to sell, so you know they won't drop the price. It's also another reason the 16G iPhone lasted so long when the competition moved to 32G years ago.

It's those darn skylake chips. The 6770/80/90 are no where to be seen. Even though we all think it's 'late', there truly is not one other laptop that has those procs (if the goal is to get the Iris 580) on the market. Should Apple release them Thursday, how can it be considered delayed when they got them out before anyone else.

Thank you. That makes sense. According to rumors the MBP refresh is expected to feature the
  • Core i7-6770HQ: A 2.6GHz quad-core processor
  • Core i7-6870HQ: A 2.7GHz quad-core processor
  • Core i7-6970HQ: A 2.8GHz quad-core processor
All of which had a 'paper' release in Jan 2016. However, even 7-8 months later, there's no sight of any PC vendors utilizing the cores above. Peculiar to say the least. Production issues or vendor hesitancy?

Nobody loves it, that's just the way Apple has been since forever. If you think their pricing is going to get reasonable now then you must of not been buying their products for very long.
The only Apple products I've had are the 2009 MacBook Pro, iPad 2 iPhone 5 & 6. I'm not expecting $500 MacBook, but their products have been competitively priced with similar high end products. The rMB is the same as the HP specter. I guess we'll see what happens Thursday.

No, most other OEMs aren't afraid to sacrificethinness/heat/battery for a dGPU, even a low tier one. Iris/Pro is great for Apple because low heat+decent price+decent perf(not really, before 580)+openCL. The 6700HQ (which you can find almost everywhere) is almost the same as the 6770HQ except for some eDRAM and Iris Pro, so other vendors aren't going to pay the premium and compete with Apple for Iris Pro when they can get by with the 6700HQ+dGPU.

Vaio (I think) is the only vendor who is using Iris (non pro) 25W chips across their entire line, a ballsy move but they seem like nice machines.

I didn't mean you specifically sorry if that didn't come off clear. I'm saying paying the premium price of 1700 for bare bones ram and HD space is pretty crazy. We're only a few days to finding out what Apple decides to do.

The spectre is 13" and comes with an i5 kabylake proc at under $1200 while the rMB is a 12" with m3 skylake at $1300. Not the same. There's always been an Apple premium. Not gonna change now.

Sad but true. Though in the case of the 9.7" iPad, we did get better speakers, Apple Pencil support, true tone display (still exclusive to the 9.7"), P3 color, 32gb standard and the A9X. It was sold as an iPad Pro, not an iPad Air 3 (which probably would have just had a better camera and new processor), so one could say that the $100 price jump was justified.

In the case of the MacBook Pro, I am fully expecting a price jump (anyone expecting it to stay at the current $1299 price will most likely be disappointed) but I'd have a hard time paying more than $1400 for a base 13". And for $1400, it better not have a puny 128gb SSD. At that price they better throw in 16gigs of ram too.

I guess we'll see in a couple days. I'd hate to spend all of this time waiting only to be faced with a $1500-$1600 base 13" and $2300 base 15". Just seems kinda crazy to me.

I think you're pulling hairs at this point. Kabylake wasn't available when they did the refresh, just like it won't be available this Thursday for the MBP. The chip they use is set in stone at this point. I was specifically referring to the memory, hard drive and form factor.

I think the new base SSD will be 256GB. The rMB is telling of what's to come. I could see that dropping by a couple hundred to $1099, $1199 for a 13" variant, $1499 for the 256/8 pro of that and $1999 for the 512/16 15".

But that's the point. The spectre got updated with kabylake the moment it was available. Apple doesn't do that (hence no broadwell 15") as they know the brand is more then just the specs.

I apologize in advance for the multi-quotes about to rain down from the heavens, but on the occasion of the 1300th page, and being on the doorstep of macnirvana, I wanted to take a stroll down memory lane, back to the heady days of March, when we were excited for the coming twin pillars of 300pages in this thread, and the announcement of new MBPs at the march "Loop You In" event! How naive we were :p

Page 300 is so close within our grasps. I started reading this thread since page 30. Nice to see the page count in tenfold

Cooks 'one more thing....'

"Sorry guys, was going to release new MBP's today but only if the Skylake macrumors thread hit 300! See you in june."

Seriously almost at 300 guys. Hoping for something like: "Thank you all for coming. We have one more thing for you macrumors' users, reaching the 300th page is a milestone and we want to give you a reward. THE NEW MACBOOK PRO!"

Let's all gather round the fire for a moment.

We all fought long and hard.

We gave our utmost.

@WRONG got drunk and told us how much we meant to him.

And now we're finally here.

300 pages. Three HUNDRED pages.

We wait only a short while yet, friends.

I'm more excited about us reaching page 300 than for a possible rMBP update

Lol I didn't notice while posting that we effectively reach page 300.

dslkjsadk.jpg

Wow, 300 pages and still nothing from Apple. What's the over/under on hitting 500 before an actual Skylake release happens?
As much as I hate to admit it, I think we will be taking this thread to 600 pages before the Skylake MBPs are released. I hope I'm wrong . . .

the price of the i5 and m3 are very similar. Apple isn't saving money by using the m3. it's for low power consumption and heat

i know the pricing on the new macbooks aren't out yet, but will the student discounts still apply on any mac, or will they say screw the students.

Thanks for the insight. Will Apple offer a dGPU option in the upcoming release? Out of curiosity:

Iris Pro 580 is ~2x more powerful than Intel HD 530.
Nvidia 1060 (for example in the new Razer Blade) is ~4-5x faster than Iris Pro 580 to put things into perspective.
