It's not like the dGPU can't get thinner or less power-hungry. Tech advances. Also, define 'significantly thinner' because it's probably going to be pretty minor compared to the current model. The Iris Pro 580 is an improvement, but it will pale in comparison to what a current dGPU can do (even a fairly weak part like what AMD is offering up).

Anyways. I'll bet my account that the 15" has an option for a dGPU and that it's a Polaris part.
If you look at TFLOPS, the 580 is more powerful than the current dGPU.
It's around 15-25% thinner (probably 15-20) - however even lower than that would significant when it comes to internal components.

You're right, tech does advance and Polaris is much better when it comes to power since it's 14nm. But i'm not the one you need to convince, I think they should include a dGPU on all MacBook Pro models (or at least on option for both 13" and 15") and I would be willing to sacrifice an hour or two of battery life to have that.

I am not saying for certain that they'll be dropping a dGPU model, but it is likely to happen
I really hope they don't drop it - I don't care about the downsides of ports, the keyboard, and Magic Toolbar, graphics is the main concern for me.

I've been following this thread since June of 2015. I apologise if I missed it when this was discussed in the past few days but you could have honestly just answered my question in less than 90 seconds or rather just leave me hanging.

Hehe these are the type of posts I was laughing at to myself last night.

You come in and you post, and then some guy comes in and says, "Hey man haven't you read the last 500 pages man? Gees wtf, we've already discussed this 300 times, gees, go back and start from the beginning till you catch up stupid NooB!"

It's like dude wtf I have been since like 600-700 and read every day until like page 1300 then I was like F.This, this is just like "super thread running diarrhea", 40+ pages a day yeah right!

Give it a break guys, Thursday's gonna be here k?

PEACE OUT!

Yes ! I think you need to watch it on an OS device if I'm not wrong though.
It's going to be at 7 PM local time, which is perfect. Snacks and drinks are ready to be consumed !

I didn't log in the forum for two days now in order to keep alive the surprise during keynote so seeing the last few messages I'm not sure if we are still excited or worried ...

Nice. It's 6PM for me, which is perfect as well. Time to warm up my mandarin!

What? They haven't replaced DGPUs in anything. Every product that offered a dGPU in their lineup still offers one.
Are you being sarcastic or do you genuinely believe that?
Every Mac used to have a dGPU but that changed over time because iGPUs have become sufficient.
However, to give you the most recent examples, both the entry level 15" MacBook Pro and all 21.5" iMacs have dropped their dGPUs.

To be more specific, I was referring to the dGPUs used in laptops from companies other than Apple when I said current. In no way do I consider anything in the MacBook Pro sold right now to be "current" :)

A new Polaris dGPU would be wayyyy faster than the Iris Pro 580.

Mac Mini had a dGPU right? Now I'm not even sure.
You mean Mac Mini G4? ;)
Ok I digress, the 2011 dual core i7 model comes with the infamous and falling Radeon HD 6630M......
Surely they are eliminating DGPUs from their product line, notably the departure of dGPU in the iMac 4K last year, MBP in 2013.
By the way, they chose to not include 9600m GT in the low-end 15'" MBP mid 2009, but this option is discontinued in 2010.
You are welcomed.

dGPUs have always been an option, and they've flip-flopped several times about offering them on the entry level MacBooks. I'll give you the 21.5" iMac though, didn't realize they completely cut the dGPU there. Fact still remains though, for the past 8 or so years it's always been the differentiator in the top tier SKUs.

The fact that iGPUs are good enough for the entry level is great, but for the foreseeable future (especially with intel seemingly discontinuing the GT4e) they have to keep offering the DGPU for the top end SKUs.

Apple store down.

So soon?

Edit: I took the screen shot at 4:53pm Texas time.
I saw the screen below maybe a minute before I went back to take the screen shot.
1 minute later it was back up

The MS event is making me realise how badly Apple has been treating its loyal customers - making them using outdated products and wait for unnecessaril long time for refreshes.

Apple is behaving unbelievablely arrogantly, something they could afford to do in the past because of their dominance and sexiness. But both are fast diminishing. They are going down it's a perception many here hold and it's confirmed with their year on year result.

I agree with you, but I just think it's likely that they'll drop it given the redesign and their priorities.

If it is removed, then I hope somebody comes out with a truly mobile GPU solution, maybe in the total volume of a 2.5" SSD or less, but it would attach to the side.

The German version works just fine.
Yea, the US store is up now as well.

It was definitely down for a minute though. I was checking the status of my second iPhone 7+ order when I saw that.

The good news is:
1) The store blinked. For at least a minute! This must mean Apple is doing something to prep it for all the wonderful MacBook Pro's !!! :)

2) My SIM-Free iPhone 7+ ship date has moved up 2 weeks from 15 Dec to 02 Dec!

What's This?
Ships: 4-6 weeks

Yes that's right, Apple are always behind now. But what they usually do when they drop the dGPU is don't update it until the current dGPU is outperformed by the new iGPU. For example, the 4K iMac used the GTX 750M until they updated it with the Iris Pro 6200 which was technically faster. At the time, however, the 900-series was out.

Really excited for tomorrow. I've been a semi-happy owner of a Day One 2006 MacBook Pro Core Duo (which was a bit of a lemon tbh, think it went in for repairs under AppleCare like 7 or 8 times? Alas.), a really happy owner of a 15" 2011 MacBook Pro i7, and, soon, a 15" 2016 MacBook Pro. Hooray!

My only question is whether or not I should be planning a trip to the Apple Store, debit card in hand, tomorrow or next week. Fingers crossed it's tomorrow, but I won't be complaining either way!

Good luck everyone!

If I want to buy a maxed-out 15" MBP, can I do that at a physical store? Or is it better to just do that online?

Also, I'm sure this has already been asked, but are the laptops typically available at the retail locations immediately? Or would it be just as quick to order online?

Any French members here? I'll be in France in November and would like to pick up a new MBP there if possible. Two questions come to mind:

- Is any particular online store better than the others?
- If you order with the British keyboard option, how much time does that add to the delivery?

I doubt it is possible, except from the Apple store maybe, did you try for the current versions ?
But from the others (Fnac, Darty, Amazon, Gros bill, etc), never saw such an option.

From what I've been checking, high end BTOs are shipped to the store for collection so it makes timing same as home delivery.

In the UK, the event is at 6pm and it's unlikely that the laptops will be available in the store right after it. Now, if they say available tomorrow (pre-order available now) it's another thing but I'm just hoping that is the case
