So reading recent posts we will most likely be getting the fully redesigned version in the summer/fall? I have been holding off since October to upgrade from my barely kicking 2011 MBP. This is becoming ridiculous now. There is no point in buying in March just to have a whole redesigned version come a few months later. Why not just release only the fully redesigned version in March? Why two versions? This is so frustrating when you have a computer that is running on fumes.

My best guess:

March - 13" gets Skylake and some other small improvements

June - 15" gets a brand new redesign with Skylake

October - redesign comes to the 13"

But I don't get this why this very slow and cautious and extremely lethargic move for the 15" rMBP why this Alienated treatment for the 15" rMBP ??

I don't know for sure, this is all just speculation. All I know is that Apple loves to stagger out its redesigns. They did that with the original retina MBP. I think they put all their resources into the redesign and only have time to complete one of them at launch. Then the 13" comes later with the redesign.

Yeah but why this special focus and emphasis only on the 13" so the last year or so after the last update and if we consider even this 2016 update 13" will have 3 updates in a period less than a year ! I mean that's outrageous !! Considering 15" gets zilch !!

Especially if you take into account that real money-maker for Apple is the 15", and not the 13" model.

Usually its an issue of Parts availability. Although we know it exist, technically the proper chip for the rMBP 15" hasn't even been released yet, though their is no reason Apple can't have a pre-prod chip and can release once the embargo is lifted in Mid March.

I wouldn't say its a wash; 13" is very popular with the education scene.

I really feel like Apple wants me to purchase the XPS 15. I have been eyeing it for about two months now and I keep holding off for a rMBP update. If it's going to be summer/fall why even release it with Skylake? Just wait a few more months to release it. When the rMBP redesign releases Skylake will be about a year old...

Apple fell WAY behind on this on.

The chips to make the 15" aren't even available. How are they behind? If you need a computer right now, just buy one.

Regardless of who is to blame Apple or Intel they are still very much behind. When the Skylake Mac version arrives Skylake will pretty much be old news. That's the reality of the situation.

The 13" sells way more.

Not really...Kaby Lake just adds a few hardware decoders to it's iGPU, Cannonlake is just a die shrink (to 10nm) which could easily be delayed into Q1 2018. (Significant)Innovation stopped with Haswell (Well Sandy Bridge 2011, but still), it's not Intel's fault...It's not like they can go and protest against the laws of physics. As @cmChimera said, if you can't wait till March/June just get it now (and sell it afterwards if you want to upgrade).

Seriously Apple and Intel, all I want is a refreshed 15" with a 6850HQ, Intel Iris Pro 580, a 950/960M,and DDR4 RAM. I don't want want a thinner chassis where it throttles and has 6-7 hours of battery life. Not sure why this is the most difficult sh*t to do in the history of tech.

Completely agree with you.
That's exactly what I would like to see, but I'm afraid it's almost the opposite we're going to see...

Why all think that this benchmark is from new MacBook Pro .
How do we know it is apple product ?

If it is for sure, then we will see soon the upgrade ....

About that Geekbench. Im very sceptic about it. Scores are too low, more in line with scores of 12 inch Macbook, not Macbook Pro.

Also DDR3? 1600 MHz? Nope, I do not believe in it a second.

When people here talk about a "redesign" is that purely aesthetics or is it upgrades to the actual hardware?

They usually go together, since a more efficient processor lets them shrink the size and weight. Apple never makes a redesign without shrinking the device.

Surely the redesigned 15" will come in June shortly after the release of appropriate Skylake chips.

In the same boat with a 15" 2011 MBP (i7 2.4, 16GB, 750GB 5,400rpm) and waiting for the refresh. My trackpad doesn't register clicks anymore (tap works just fine, though, and my muscle memory has completely adapted to the change) and it only charges if you point the magsafe adapter the wrong, port-coverging way... but I wouldn't say it's running on fumes.

I use this to edit HD video in FCP X as well as do motion graphics and sound production in Motion and Logic Pro X and it still gets the job done fine enough. Here's an example of something I just made with my 2011 MBP 15.

I know even the current MBP would show me a huge increase in speed and responsiveness when it comes to working with these apps, but it doesn't change the fact that my current MBP still works.

What are you doing with yours that is making you feel like it's struggling so much?

You would probably feel light-speed levels of improvements with any of the current ones! That's how I felt, I jumped from a mid june 13" 2012, it died, bought a mid october 15" 2014 and holy crap at the difference. If it is going good for you hold onto it and get the complete overhaul with the hopefully soon to be released one.

Occupation: I do videogames/programming, motiongraphics (After Effects), 3dsmax and all the tour around that. And it's a blast, super portable, can jump from dock station to dock station (have good old TB displays at two places). I don't need the new one but damn I want it, I'll get one for sure. Now, if the 13" gets enough of iGPU meat, I might even go with that, TB3 would take care of the eGPU when docked.

I couldn't wait any longer. I replaced my 2011 MBP 17 with a 2015 rMBP with the upgraded i5, 256GB SSD, and 16GB Ram. It's a beautiful computer, and I got it for a great price.

I sometimes consider the 13" but two things keep holding me back:

No dedicated GPU, which for compositing work is a drag. Even GUI elements in Final Cut like waveforms and thumbnails stutter and lag without a proper GPU to keep things going.

Screen real estate. Apple Pro Apps are not shy about wanting their elbow room. You could edit in FCP X on a 13" screen in practice. But over a prolonged time it would drive you nuts.

Someday I might get an iMac for all my heavy lifting, at which point a 13" satellite machine would be a sweet thing to have when going mobile. But for now I think the 15" gives me the best enough of both worlds in terms of portability and power.

My new 13" mentioned above is my only computer now, and I will be buying a Thunderbolt Display to go with it for screen real estate.
