ArsTechnica has their hands-on up.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2016/1...acbook-pros-their-keyboard-and-the-touch-bar/

The keyboard uses a "second-generation" version of the butterfly switch mechanism that Apple first used in the 12-inch MacBook, and for the 13-inch Pro without the Touch Bar the layout is exactly identical. For those worried about key travel and how the keyboard might feel, there's both good and bad news. The good news is that key travel is noticeably improved, and the best thing about the MacBook keyboard—very firm keycaps that make it difficult to mistype—is still fully present here. If you've used the MacBook keyboard and gotten used to it or grown to like it (as several people in the Ars Slack channel have), you'll love the changes.

The bad news is that if you hate the slim MacBook keyboard, this second-generation version has much more in common with the MacBook keyboard than with the old MacBook Pro keyboard. It has been a few months since I've used one of the desktop Magic Keyboards, but going from memory I'd say that the MacBook Pro's keyboard travel falls somewhere in between the Magic Keyboard and the one on the original MacBook. I don't mind it, and I suspect most people will be able to get used to it, but I also think it will continue to be divisive.

So the 6870HQ and 6970HQ will likely never see the light of day despite being "launched Q1 2016." Very strange.

Yeah it is odd. We were all like "No one's using those processors yet! Apple is waiting for Iris Pro! That's why the delay--it's Intel's fault--Skylake isn't outdated!"

I still agree that Skylake is not outdated, but we were all wrong about everything else.

Let the buyer beware.
For those of you who don't like i7 (slightly likely to generate more heat and causes to fan to operate more, etc than i5) and looking for i5 MacBook Pro, CPU performance gain wouldn't happen unless you get Touch Bar model. (that is comparing this year's model to 2014' or 2015' models)

2015' MacBook Pro 13' Retina Display: i5 2.9GHz Broadwell CPU.
vs.
2016' Macbook Pro 13' non Touch Bar: i5 2.0GHz Skylake CPU. (its also the only model with USB ports)

Practically, upgrade only begins from Touch Bar basic models.

Wow. I just noticed this. Is there something else beyond just the Ghz. Is it true that the old 2015 model as you have compared is actually faster machine?

Does anyone have any insight to this?

Finally able to catch up. Wow.
1) The 2015 model stays the same price??? (Not in the UK*)
2) The even more expensive non-OLED model replacement for Air? How?
3) THE UK PRICES!!!!* (In the UK* ;) )
4) The 13" Air remains unchanged for the same price! (Not in the UK*)
5) Mac Pro, unchanged, gets a 500 quid price bump! (In the UK*)
6) They think those configs at these prices will increase Mac sales? Good luck with that! (Including the UK*)

caresses his 2015 rMBP My sweet baby, I love you, all is forgiven and you shall keep me company for quite a while longer.

* Personally I would like to thank everyone who voted for Brexit, my baby rMBP cost me 1100 euro including Applecare from Amazon UK.

PLEASE keep in mind that all the advertised specs in the presentation only hold true for the MAXED spec models.

the 3.1 GB/s write speeds are only for the 2TB SSD; inferior models will be around half of that speed.
2.3x faster GPU only holds true for the maxed out AMD 460; 450/455 are inferior.
Same goes for CPU specs, etc.

Could someone please confirm this? About 51 minutes in http://www.apple.com/apple-events/october-2016/ it says that the 13" model also offers SSD writing speeds up to 3.1GB/s, but the 13" model can't be configured with 2TB.

Wow, at the moment I'm really close the buy the 15", 2.7, 460 Pro and 512GB SSD. I really wanted 32GB of RAM, but I think for the next two years I have to live with it. I also had a quick look at the Lenovo P50, but damn, it's really expensive, too.

No, but AMD Pro 460's performance can be directly inferred by its compute power when compared to the exact same architecture of the RX 460 (both are AMD Polaris based).

2.15 TFLOPs vs. 1.86 TFLOPs, expect a decrease in performance. We'll wait for benchmarks to confirm.
Where is information of compute performance of the GPUs?

So looks like the processors being used in the 15" are the 6920HQ and the 6820HQ, both released in September 2015. At least no one will be wrong when they say that the new MBP is using year-old processors, because they are literally a year old. Not that the Iris Pro ones were huge upgrades, but it is interesting nonetheless. (The ones being used have no L4 cache, but I'm not savvy enough to know the significance of that).

cant decide on 2.7GHZ or 2.9GHZ.
Is it worth $240? Trying to think of how it would benefit me.
will it benefit me with gaming in photoshop in any way?

This is the last decision I need to make before pulling the trigger. help!

Wow. Clap clap clap.

They're using the lower end variant of the skylake cpu. The one released in 2015. The one with HD 530. No HD 580.

Ok.

So one question.

What the **** took so long.

I'm looking at this thing, looking at it specs, and it should have come out last March. This thing should have been released in March. March.

It didn't need to have Polaris graphics. They could have/should have just put in a decent graphics card in at the time. This 450 isn't exactly a monster.

...If I wasn't lacking a Mac right now, which I need, I sure would not buy this product. Too bad. Take my money for now Apple.

If this just had 3 things:
  • DDR4, 32GB max
  • current high end skylake skew
  • Bumped resolution
I would be ****ing elated about this product. None of these things are huge things to ask for.

C'mon. At this price these things should be standard but, let's not kid ourselves, it's Apple. They should have at least given us these options. This aint 2012.

I'm not even going to be salty about the graphics card. I already knew going into this that Apple's motto in this area is "Good 'nuf".

Definitely thinking I'll sell this when the 32GB or better display resolution update of this comes out.

Edit:

Also, I'm surprised there aren't more posts complaining about the lack of a glowing logo. I don't really care but I know a lot of people were saying they did.
Apart from the better iGPU (the 580 over the 530) are the late 2016 CPU's better?

Apart from the better iGPU (the 580 over the 530) are the late 2016 CPU's better?

The 2015 ones say "N/A" for L4 cache, whereas the 2016 ones say 128 MB, but I don't really know what L4 cache is or how important it is.

But yeah given this, I want dGPU enabled all the time. Thought it was going to be the 580, but since it's not, I pretty much don't want the iGPU being used unless I'm just taking notes or something.

It really is genius what they're doing. Apple have said time and time again that iOS and iPad/iPhone are the future of the company. What better way to kill off the Mac line?

1. Update MacBook Pros with insane prices and 1.5 year old technology as "new".
2. Don't update Mac Pro or Mac mini (thus killing those two)
3. Offer 16 gb as the "top of the line" memory in notebooks.
4. Did I mention insane prices?

A year from now, this will be the headline:
"After abysmal notebook sales, Apple decides to discontinue it's entire Mac line."

New 2016 15inch, 512gb sad MacBook Pro, with 2.9 cpu and AMD 460 video card in space grey is ordered.

been waiting a long time to upgrade my 2010 MacBook pro. last years update didn't cut it for me, so i was happy to wait.

i wonder how long this one will last me, now that magsafe is missing

Bought the 13" with oled 512GB 16GB for €2291,74 (Netherlands with student discount).
Ridiculously expensive, but I had been saving up since march and now I atleast know I have one in about 2 weeks :).

I'm happy, I'm out.
Bye guys, it's been fun following this thread.

Luckily I already got the one with the 460 (thank God for student discounts)

Okay... so let's be honest with ourselves.. as far as we know there are no more Iris Pro chips for future Intel processors after Skylake... so... I don't know... is it really that bad?
