trying to do some comparison and really contemplating moving away from macs.

13" rMBP, i5 duo core, 16 gb ram, 256 gb hd, iris pro 550 - 1879
15" rMBP, i7 quad core, 16 gb ram, 256 gb hd, radeon pro 450 - 2249
15" xps, i7 quad core, 16 gb ram, 512 gb hd, nvidia 960m - 2049
13" surface book, i7 duo core, 16gb ram, 512gb, nvidia 965m - 2799

The xps seems like its the best bang for the buck but doesn't have a wheel or a touch bar. Honestly, doesn't seem like anyones offering 32gb of ram for a portable somewhat aesthetically pleasant laptop. So I figured I would buy one of the above and build a desktop computer. Depending on which laptop I get, I would build a hackintosh or a pc for renderings. But was wondering how much faster is the 15" rmbp compared to the 13" in with similar ram. The difference being the CPU and the dGPU. Worth the extra 400? Probably won't get the xps unless theres a crazy deal on one. Like those refurbs that you can get for like 1500. And the Surfacebook still seems expensive compared to the rmbp.
It's 450 more and you get double the storage but only a duo core i7. Also how much faster is that nvidia 965 compared to the 450?

I've decided to pass on the MBP a few months ago, as I won't need it for professional use for the next couple years at least.
My Samsung laptop died a few months ago, but I have a little one at home and barely even get to use my iPad Pro.

Now that I've seen the prices and what's actually on offer I'm quite alright with my decision, even though I would've loved a new toy (alas a very expensive toy)

I've actually decided a few days ago to do a no buy year challenge, as I just think I'm buying too much useless things in general (I'm a woman after all :D)

Maybe in a couple years time, when I'll be back at work, I'll be able to justify such an expensive price tag, but at the moment I can't.

Wait a minute...I haven't seen the whole keynote yet but you're telling me that iPhones can't even connect to the new MBPs without some sort of dongle??? Your flagship phones and flagship laptops don't even connect together without an adaptor...are you kidding me, Apple!? Do you guys even talk to each other over there???

As has been posted 1,328 times before, USB-C to Lightning cables are already available.

9 to 5 Mac have run a poll on who is buying what configuration.

"I don't plan on upgrading after seeing the product" is currently topping the poll :D

Will be interesting to see how this one develops...

Q-6

So now students 'need' 32GB RAM? Sorry, it's just nonsense.

"Students" usually don't need a 1 500+ USD laptop at all, meaning the MBP isn't something for students? But who is it for then? I'm on a 15" 2011 MBP with 16 GB ram. The ram is my systems only bottleneck. The top of the line new 15" costs 2 800 USD. But has exactly the same bottleneck limitation as my almost 6 years old MBP! I am very underwhelmed...

Obviously those 1328 times they meant out the box compatable.
the iphone needs the possibility to recharge in the car, at airports, at friends, etc.. it's too early to move them to an usb-c cable.

the new laptops instead... well, what can you currently do with usb-c? you're basically screwed anyway

I was trying to get the base 13" MBP. I slept a night thinking about it (good morning btw), and the price increase is just too big to justify. So I decided to buy a brand new base 13" 2015 model for 1.050 EUR. I hope I won't regret my choice. Enjoy your machines folks!

I'm not sure why it'd be too early to switch. One they could have given you the option to pick USB c or A. Two the old cables could have worked just as well so if you or a friend had a USB A cable you could still charge it. It would have made more sense to release the MacBook Pro 1st then the iPhone with USB c after, but that obviously wasn't happening.

Still disappointed but i see that the 13 Air is still available, thanks Cook..,meh..,i will buy it and then i'll see what the Kaby Lake will bring, Schilly said that they didn't start any with price in mind..oh dear ,this changes everything .Seriously,i think Cook have to resign and someone must tell in Apple that they are alienating their base ,imagine when Microsoft or the other will start to build some "unofficial" Hackintosh compatible Pc,i mean nothing but just casually working..with MacOs..in some way.For many things Apple looks like Nintendo, their force is software and the app the hardware is running, stats are very clear about that.

I don't think this pricing will hold up for long. It might not come down by a lot, but this is higher than they've ever tested in the past. When the 15" rmbp debuted, it was $2200.

Some years ago they used to adjust their prices in early spring, I'm not shure if they do this anymore? (But once the holiday season is over I think they will adjust the price a bit... We can all also vote with our wallets, don't forget that!)

hey guys. I'm curious. I don't have any usb-c cables at all so I'm going to need a converter to standard usb. I've heard some mixed reviews about the official Apple one.

http://store.apple.com/xc/product/MJ1M2AM/A

such as usb2.0 speeds instead of 3.0. and easily breaking.

what do you guys recommend? preferably something not expensive and pleasing to the eye.

Good morning @ll :)
After a good nights sleep I am still very happy that I ordered my new MBP last night! Upgrading from a 2009 13" mbp it's going to be a hell of a difference :D

Ordered
15" space grey
2,6 ghz
16gb ram
512gb ssd
R 460

ETA 17.11. - 24.11.

Glad that it's still possible to post here! I will sure miss you guys. Always had a great time reading thru all your posts and learned a lot about things I'd never heard of before :p
Thanks for the journey :)

One thing to consider about the 13" w/o touch bar is that it is meant to be the MacBook Air replacement. That's at least what they billed it as during the keynote. So it's not supposed to be a MBP upgrade

The more I look at the touch bar the more I'm liking it. There's no point buying a new MBP without the touch bar. To me it would seems like the previous Force Touch trackpad. Once you used it, you can't go back. The plusses would be touch bar got more things to play. It will be addictive.

They ditched the optical audio output it seems...

Is there word out on when we can try them out in the stores? Anyone going to check if it is in the Netherlands? I can't decide between silver or grey!

Also still a bit undecided over getting the 13 or 15 inch. I'm thinking the 15 inch will last on me a bit longer due to the better performance features so it would be worth the extra cash.

So I know I ordered the 13" Space Grey NON-touch bar base model this morning after the keynote...but now that the day is over and settled in I'm curious as to if I made the right choice or not. I'm ashamed of myself but I kind of wanted the touch bar "just because" it's new and "cool," but the college student in me didn't have the money to cough up a few hundred more dollars. It's already bad enough I'm into Apple products which means I'm already having to spend a lot of money.

I know my question is probably tough to answer considering as of now most of us don't have the machine in our hands yet.. especially most of y'all that have configurations done to them.

ON paper, is the new base model 13" rMBP non touch bar (Supposedly the Air replacement) SLOWER than the 2015 13" base rMBP? I'm no expert when it comes to specifications, but it looks like the processor speed is slower on this years model than the 2015. Is the iGPU faster versus the 2015 model? I was supposed to bite the bullet last month on getting the 2015 13" with 256GB which comes out to around the same as the 2016 one I just ordered. Also how would you guys think the difference is in processing power on paper between the non touch bar and the touch bar 13"?

Nothing good has came out of what you guys think about the 13" non touch bar, is it that bad? or is it just because of you guys are getting 15" with configurations done thus the 13" non touch bar is no competition.

I'm an university student that mostly just use the laptop for word processing, but I do need something good enough to run CAD programs for some of my classes.

Please don't yell at me, I know I sound extremely stupid right now.

As someone who makes a living with Adobe software like Photoshop, I'm somewhat disappointed with the 16gb max ram too. Files from cameras get bigger every year. But there's something even more important I need to ask you guys as you all seem to understand the GPU stuff well: Does some of the GPU options in 15" offer enough power to run Oculus Rift and HTC Vive? Oculus CEO has pointed out multiple times they are not supporting macs simply because no mac is powerful enough because of their graphics cards. I just started my post grad studies in new media, so ability to work with VR is very important. Yes, I know a PC would probably offer more options, but I've had macbook pros for 10 years so moving to Windows isn't something I want to do if it's not absolutely necessary. I also need a laptop, not a Mac Pro or iMac.
  • Oculus system requirements for the GPU are according to them "NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 equivalent or greater"
  • HTC Vive says "NVIDIA GeForce™ GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon™ RX 480, equivalent or better"
There are new VR headsets coming out all the time, so I know these things change. But buying a laptop that doesn't even run the current headsets would be useless. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: This is the reason I've been waiting for all these years. I never needed a redesign, the space grey color option or a touch bar for emojis. They're all ok, but it seems strange to have a "pro" computer that's very popular amongst creative professionals if it doesn't work with popular hardware like VR headsets.

So I ordered a 15", 2.7GHz, 16GB, 512GB, Radeon Pro 460. Let's see how the situation develops towards USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 docks. Then I will decide whether I cancel my order or not.
