With regards to OS X vs Windows I'm going to repeat what I wrote on a thread regarding just that:

In the office I work on Windows 7 and for computer games at home I mostly use Windows 10, no complaints, stable as mountains. But...
But it's not a nice place to be. It feels cold and clinical, like a machine.
Using Windows feels like browsing a file cabinet.

(Something about Ununtu removed for the sake of simplicity)

Mac OS, OSX, this is where I want to be.
Like a soft bathrobe or a warm pair of slippers that somehow come with a butler (Automator).
Everything feels connected in OSX. Hard to explain.
It looks nice and unobtrusive, not distracting. Using it feels intuitive (a relative term, I guess).
I never get that "HNNGH! WHAT? WHAT!? JUST DO AS I ****ING TELL YOU AND DON'T ASK ANY ****ING QUESTIONS!" feeling with OSX that I frequently get with Windows.
And to hell with Windows Update, Java updates, Anti Virus updates...Just go away!
I just want to enjoy some peace and quiet with my personal (the operative word here) computer, not fiddle with all the maintenance **** Windows requires to go to my liking.

Edited slightly for relevance.

Still have a slight hope for the 13" in March ...

Thanks for sharing. Did you read anything about Mac Mini update?

Sorry, no.

If it is updated silently in Mar. 21 like what happened last year, can I get it immediately on that day in Apple Store?

Well, since everyone has jumped on the "What if I jumped to Windows because I'm tired of waiting for the Skylake MBP" topic, I'm just going to lay out my take.

I'm a lifelong Windows user. It's easy enough for me to use and, like most people I know, blue screens are a funny myth. I admire OSX for some things (battery life checking without complicated DOS prompts? Neat!). But I had no reason to switch, I liked Windows a lot.

But Microsoft in the past few years has developed a certain attitude that has made me decide to switch to OSX (once the Skylake MBP emerged). This attitude has to do with the assumption that Windows devices (or the Xbox, for that matter) have unlimited internet bandwidth.

You see, I live on a mountain. Not, like, Kilimanjaro but a relatively remote area outside of a major city. I don't have a wired internet connection. I used to, and giving it up was an amazingly hard choice, but when I look out past my pool I can literally see things 40 miles away. And besides, I'm getting by just fine with the internet I managed with cellular/satellite as long as I don't stream stuff or let software downloads get out of control.

But Windows... That's my problem child OS. The machines left in standby overnight wake themselves up and start downloading/uploading things without my permission. Windows 10 updates can be delayed if you're savvy enough to switch some settings, but the default is when Microsoft wants to use your presumably unlimited connection, it's going to. That, and Microsoft takes large amounts of usage data and uploads it regularly, which is something I can't stop. My portable Windows machines get regular trips to Starbucks for updates, but I have to leave my desktop (my powerful main work machine) off overnight lest something terrible happen.

What could happen? How about a failed update? Windows machines can download 1gb of data, but because my connection is somewhat lossy there might be a packet missing and verification fails, so what does it do? It downloads another 1gb and tries again. An unchecked Windows machine in an update loop could eat an entire months worth of Internet in a single night.

I don't know if OSX is any better, but I like their stance on not taking user data which is something Windows 10 hoovers up like a maid in a 5-star hotel. And THAT is why, no matter how long it takes, I'm switching over to OSX when Apple finally decides the time is right for Skylake.

Thank you! Yesterday i saw this http://www.feng.com/iPhone/news/2016-03-09/Skylake-Mac-mini_640696.shtml

Sadly it looks like a clickbait speculation post

http://www.startech.com/m/Cables/th...rbolt-3-usb-c-thunderbolt-adapter~TBT3TBTADAP

Adapters from star tech will be $100-80 give or take depending on where you get it from. Don't remember where I saw the cheapest preorder price.

Predict this puppy to sell like hotcakes as manufacturers still produce Tb2 devices or Tb2 owners migrate to nMacs and need dat I/O. I completely skipped over TB1/TB2 so I'm good lol.

Finally someone found an adapter!!! I use a TB1 HD and once TB3 equipped rMBPs come out i'll be upgrading to that from my 2011 MBP... This should save me around €500,00! Thanks :) Bookmarked and saved :).

Aside from this offtopice rambling: max 2 TB3 ports is my guess. Otherwise they would have to include a secondary or more power-hungry TB3 controller. This takes up more space and uses more battery...

Congrats!
Just wait until you get the much coveted "regular" title.
Sexual partners of your preference will be tripping over each other stampeding towards you like a Benny Hill sketch. ;)

Care to show us a photo of the view from your windows (as in the ones that are in your house, not MS Windows!) :D ?

I really do not get the hate on windows 10

Many years ago (back in the times of Windows Vista), I switched from Windows to OSX and never looked back... Recently, I purchased a Windows 10 gaming laptop for my son. I spent like a week prepping up this laptop for him: installing software, updating graphic drivers, installing Steam and other gaming paraphernalia, downloading the latest antivirus databases, etc... So yeah, I got my hands dirty with Windows 10 for quite a few days...

And my opinion still stands after all these years: Windows is a pain in the ass to operate! Things just DONT work intuitively: you need to customize, tweak, optimize or patch every single thing along the way. Its file/folder directory system is a pain. Its start menu system is intrusive and obnoxious. The font scaling is atrocious. The endless configuration menus for the most irrelevant parameters are utterly unnecessary. Etc.

So no: I won't ever go back to Windows as my daily operating system of choice, which is a shame because their hardware has almost caught up with Apple (Razer and XPS being good examples).

In the office I work on Windows: no complaints, stable as mountains. But... it's not a nice place to be. It feels cold and clinical, like a machine. Using Windows feels like browsing a file cabinet.

I just couldnt have explained it better. This post summarizes PERFECTLY the difference between Windows and OSX.

You dont need any anti virus for windows 10, your brain is the best anti virus. And you only need touchpad drivers and gpu drivers (if you want to play games) on windows 10. I dont know what you did for a week... Setting up windows 10 takes maybe one hour (installing windows - installing windows updates - installing touchpad and gpu drivers - installing the software you want to use [which you also have to do on OSX]).

Totally agree about the virus. And you don't even need to intall drivers. Just AMD / Nvdia software and they will do it automatically.

"installing Steam and other gaming paraphernalia" he says this like if people don't have to install Steam on OS X. Guess what? I was wondering if I could use my X1 gamepad on OS X, and it seems I will not only have to remap buttons but to pay for an APP! What a joke. Meanwhile I just plug-n play in W10.

Also I was looking to buy the Magic Mouse with my next and first rMBP / Mac Mini, and surprise! OS X isn't able to recognice the third button without an APP. I mean seriously? This isn't a pain in the ass and it is intuitive? Because we are talking about official hardware for OS X here...

And I could keep giving examples, but my point is, I find it funny how Mac users think about OS X as an easy to use and userfriendly operating system, while I, as an all life windows user look at it and the word that cames to my mind is "simple" in an artless meaning. It's so simple you can't do basically anything without messing with the console or depending of external APPs because Apple didn't want to work on that.

Seriously I don't get all the windows hate.

I see several posts of people running rather new rMBPs, such as 2013-2014 models stating things such as...

"OMG OMG, IF APPLE DOESN'T RELEASE A NEW MBP NEXT WEEK I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'LL DO!!! SCREW IT, I'M GETTING THE DELL XPS, SO SICK OF WAITING!!!"

Can I just ask - and this is a legitimate question - what are you guys doing on your computers that a 2013-2014 Quad-Core 15" rMBP is not able to handle? ...And maybe more importantly - what does Skylake bring to the table that you simply cannot live without for a mere two - three months, instead forcing you to buy Windows laptops?

I will be honest, I'm using a late 2013 rMBP and I am thinking of upgrading (which is why I'm here). However, not because I need more performance. The 13" rMBP is all the computer I need, performance-wise.

The reason I want to upgrade has to do with portability and residual value. Back in 2013 I was sick of waiting for a Retina MacBook Air (already in 2013, hah!) so bought the 13" rMBP as everyone claimed it was the "spiritual successor". Still, coming from the MBA, the 13" rMBP still fells brick-like. Sure I have no problem lugging it around, but a thinner, wedge-type rMBP would be tempting, to say the least. Thus, I will only upgrade to the new rMBP if the Skylake version brings a redesign, or to the rMB if it were to be given an additional USB-C port and FaceTime HD camera.

Second, residuals. By selling my rMBP right now, I would almost be able to even out (bought it for a great price, the deal was too good to pass up). Thus, it makes financial sense to sell my old rMBP right now.

You missed the point of the post. It was not about me spending a week installing stuff - it was about me spending a week using Windows 10 on daily basis (and thus getting familiar with it), and still finding OSX significantly easier to use.

How did we get on Mac vs. PC in a the Skylake thread?

Because Apple is taking too long to update their laptop family and, as a result, their customers are searching for alternatives (Windows laptops). Therefore, they compare both operating systems. It's a valid argument indeed.

Wonder what's under embargo ready for tomorrow's start of GDC. Is there any specific meeting / press event eg for Skull Canyon

I glanced at the schedule but can't find a keynote. But AMDs is at 4:00 and I didn't see it on the schedule either. We should know something tomorrow or tuesday. It's likely we will see something before AMDs keynote. The timeline should look something like this:

-Formally introduce Skylake-H & Xeon with Iris Pro 580. Comparisons of GFX performance to midrange laptop dGPU.
-Deep dive on Skull Canyon NUC, Thunderbolt 3 Capabilities
-AMD Keynote @ 4:00 PM, Laptop dGPU but also XConnect/eGPU for enthusiasts.
Somewhere tucked in there Razer Core will be demoed along with availability and pricing. AMD is leaning on Razer heavily to have the Core used with xconnect so I expect them to make it easy and do it right. Each one sold is potential mind/marketshare for AMD, even though the core also works with nvidia cards.

Wow wow wee wow! That's a lot of usb-c ports.
[doublepost=1457814620][/doublepost]I hope there aren't any TB ports I never use those, no offense to all the fans of those.

They very well just may listen to your concern.

Usb-c is a TB port

The main point why I won't return back to Windows is habit.
I've been more than six years working with OSX, so I've started understand how it works and how I can fix it.
And I like too much, as you say, the way OSX manage Registry, installation, and generally the system.
Heck, I don't want to make anymore a defragmentation on my computer...
Also, Windows is changed so much from the last time I used it (good ol' XP :D ), it would be really weird for me turning back to another OS.
Not to mention all my files, documents, and applications!
And furthermore all the games on Steam which I purchased for OSX.
Naaaah, I'm not turning back working on Windows.
Besides, I can install it on my Mac anyway, to see how it works and maybe to start learning again (and that's something I can't do on Windows).
But having it as my first work OS?
Nope.

your steam games will still run on windows. just letting you know.

For those who are waiting for the proved-reliable insider's information on feng.com, sorry for the delay.

And here we go.

  1. We do have the 13'' update, and it'll be thinner than the 2015 version.
  2. The new 15'' MBP will come this fall with a re-design. New colors. New keyboard. Hidden functional keys. Touch screen. Much thinner.
  3. No MBA update temporarily.
  4. Earlier posts include the rose-gold NMB. But later he said it is postponed. (But the event is also postponed. Maybe it'll be a One More Thing?)

I don't know how you guys feel, but this arrangement sounds reasonable to me.

But, still, don't take it too seriously. The rumors about Macbook in feng.com now is also a mess. Those I picked are posted by the guys have hit it a lot of times before. Hope they don't miss it this time.

Maybe I didn't see it or my Google translation is bad, but the post says "I heard that the keyboard function keys are hidden in shadow, but also engage in touch, OMG." I don't see anything about an actual touch screen. I interpreted it as those buttons on laptops that you can touch, like this.

...really? Well that's good. Thank you. :)
Answering to @MacRazySwe: for me there are a couple of reasons why I won't buy a 2014 MBP.
Consider I would buy a 15"
- The price: 2700 € for a computer that is 2 years old it's unfair.
- The durability: if I have to spend a lot of money on a computer, I want to take the best I can, so it can last more
- The ageing: consequently, if I buy now a MBP it would be old and devalued as crap in a couple of months.
- The GPU: those that fit in the current MBP are quite good, but the GT4 coming with Skylake looks really great.

tl;dr
For me, to sell a "top-of-the line" computer two years old for 2700 € is a fraud.

Now retailers are selling 2015 mbpr 15 inch with 512gb ssd and m370x for around $1900. I'm getting this right away if apple doesn't announce the new rmbps next week

Fraud is obviously the wrong word to use, but I do agree with your point: the MBP 15" has been a VERY bad value for months: outdated CPU, outdated GPU, extremely premium price (specially outside USA), etc. The MBP 13" and the MBAir are priced fairly, but for some reason the MBP 15" is pretty expensive for the specs you get.
