What is actually in a eGpu box ? is it just a controller to interface the gpu with the TB3 port and some cooling fans. 400$ for that is way to expensive, the price will surely go down with emerging competition.

Also I think one of the main reasons apple might do a redesign this year is to create a visual gap with the older models. Apple needs to make the older ones feel old visually and not just in terms a specs. Thats how they run there iPhone business.

eGPU boxes also have a power supply. I think the Razer Core has a 500W PSU.
But yes the prices should be a lot cheaper. My personal guess is that a normal eGPU box will be around $200 (hopefully).

500W thats a lot,
cant wait to 3d print my enclosure and use some old computer power supply

I know I will blow you away guys, but...

Intel demoed Skylake NUC with 2.6 GHz Quad Core CPU and Intel HD580 iGPU clocked at 950 MHz using Just Cause 3.

In 1080p it got between 30 and 40 FPS. Similar result to GTX 860M/950M with same resolution and low settings. Intel did not said what settings were used, but still.

Yep, HD580 as fast as GTX950M ;). Good job Intel.

Heck, it's better than most middle class mobile dGPUs. I'd be Very satisfied

At first I balked at the price even though I could greatly use one of these, then I got to thinking about it. Not saying you're wrong at all, if it were $200-$350 I would've preordered yesterday. $500 is a bit much, but there's a lot to consider.

Look at the Akitio Thunder2 PCIe single card box, long considered the gold standard for home-brew eGPU setups. It comes in at around $270, cheaper now since TB2 is now antiquated. Akitio does not support it's use for graphics cards. it works, obviously there are a lot of running setups, but Akitio official doesn't support it.

That at $270 (or now, $230) compares to the Core. The core is certified xconnect for certain AMD cards. That's huge, as long as AMD, Razer and Intel keep working together, they can quickly squash any bugs. Intel is demoing it with their Skylake NUC as "the" appliance to get for enhanced graphics performance. The core will support most cards as long as they fit without any weird jerry rigging. And it passes power, ethernet, USB in a decent sized aluminum enclosure. If all this is supported, say on the Mac, we can get the Core, and "save" on an additional power cord ($80), TB -> Ethernet Adapter ($30), and usb hub or usb-c -> usb-a adapters ($30-$50), it starts to look a little more attractive.

So i'm conflicted still. I need all the cards on the table (TB3 Macs to start with) before I start placing my orders but i'm just hoping Apple gets out of OUR way and lets us use it. They don't even have to build it, just clean up the EFI and make it hot pluggable. I fully expect Akitio to answer with their own TB3 version of the wildly popular Thunder PCIe box, however who knows if they will seek any interaction with AMD.

I truly love this thread.

"Bitte spreche kein Niederländisch, Deutsch ist bereits eine schwere Sprache. (Ich mache Spass, natürlich)"
Just trying to help. Definitely getting there though, WRONG
I was so close...
Help is always welcome. Thank you very much. :)
I'm also amazed by how difficult is German and yet how simple, by a certain point of view.
But anyway,
J'ai introducé une langue étrangère, et tout le monde devient fou. Quelle horreur hahaha. Je dois récupérer mon français parce que je remarque que je ne suis plus capable de ecrire quelques phrases, sans rechercher si le grammaire est juste.
I'm more familiar with french than with german. Or at least, my mother language is so similar to french...

Ok, ok, back to topic, sorry for the language digression guys.
(by the way that's your fault Apple, you see what you did making us wait so long with no rumors?! We started talking in foreign languages! We're all getting crazy!)
So at least we have some real news from the Iris 580, and they look great.
Awesome!
Can't wait to see even further benchmarks!
Thanks koyoot for providing us the news.

I was also wondering why Intel seems, at least for now, not so interested in promoting the results of Iris Pro.
I mean, yeah, they showed this NUC rumored since January (or even before), but except for that, not so much!
Why so?! It's a great result!
"Ehy guys, Intel here, we finally made ad integrated GPU with low consumption that as the same performance as a dGPU, but never mind, don't worry about it, we're not interested on it."

I have what may seem like a dumb question: can you plug in a USB Type-C cable into a Thunderbolt 3 port? Are USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 ports the same?

When you say "Are the ports the same", the answer is no. They are different ports.
But, Thunderbolt 3 uses a port whos pinout matches USB Type-C, meaning it can be a port that uses both.
But you can have a USB-C port that IS NOT a thunderbolt port.

Thunderbolt == USB
USB != Thunderbolt

Talking in tongues confirmed. Someone call Father Merrin! STAT!

Yeah, very promising for the 15". Good battery life when unplugged and 'switched off dGPU' and still some horse power under the hood! And obvs great if you don't wanna spring for the dGPU mbp too!

(SIDEBAR: Wow, what a thread! It's fascinating to read some of the early posts/speculation. Folks have been wanting Skylake forever!)

Do you think there will be options for:
1) 32GB RAM
2) over 2TB of SSD storage?

I ask because my 2011 15" MBP has 16GB of RAM and 2.5TB of storage. Seems silly that a laptop 5 years in the future would have the same limitations!

You have 2,5TB ocuppying 2 enclosures, being probably an hybrid solution of a 500GB SSD + traditional HDD (much slower), with that SSD running throught SATA 3, that means 600MB/s at max, and all the energy that those 2 drives consume plus the extra weigh on your laptop.

If you are worried about storage, andthey don't release a +2TB option this year, get an SDXC card + the 1TB option, which is way faster than you solution (up to 2GB/s). As far as I know, there are up to 2TB SDXC cards.

I wasn't aware you can add storage in the way of a sd card to a mac. Good to know i see 128gig cards for 65$ on amazon

Am I understanding this right and I could do the same thing with my mid 2011 MBA? The 256Gb are very limiting and thus I am just wondering whether my old MBA could actually use those 2GB/s.

Sorry for the lack of knowledge as far as i know or what i have seen ages ago with the sd cards u can find in the cameras and it was used only for pics and videos simple stuff and it takes time to load and now when i saw this sdxc its up to 2 TB .. Is it possible to use for storage like movies documents same use as the External HDD? I am following the thread and i am buying my first mac pro and my biggest problem is the storage and i am not doing any editing compliming anything just storing movies and music and normal use but if this sdxc card useful would save me alot but also is it reliable or might die quick like a flash drive any moment ?

Their THEORETICAL max is 2TB, generally they're only available up to 512GB (a higher $ per GB cost as well). Additionally, they're SLOW compared to SATA/USB based SSDs. SDXC cards generally max out at ~800Mbps while SATA drives max out at at ~4000Mbps.

You can add me to the list of folks impressed by the new Skylake-based NUC. Pricey for an NUC, though. Here are some links:

http://ark.intel.com/products/93341/Intel-Core-i7-6770HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_50-GHz

http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/product-briefs/nuc6i7kyk-brief.pdf

The NUC has the Core i7-6770HQ Skylake CPU with the Iris Pro graphics 580 w/ 128 MB eDRAM that acts like an L4 cache. Up to 32 GB of ddr4-2133, two M.2 SSD slots, TOSLINK audio, HDMI 2.0 video w/ HDCP 2.2 support, lots of other stuff.

It is an NUC, not an MBP, but, it does demonstrate what can be done. I wish it would run OS X.
