That's what they have to do! Look at MS with the not only not leaked but awesome Surface Book.

I mean just look at this...

If you were Apple wouldn't you want step up the competition game?

The surface book is really great. At launch they had quite a few firmware issues but its been ironed out.

The idea of the next generation surface book, with a polaris or pascal GPU equivalent of the 940M, makes me drool. Honestly, id rather have that then the new Macbook Pro 13", I just don't want to wait until September, and the current 940M is too weak to buy the current one for me.

Waited for a few months now for the updated 15 inch, my old 13:incher has taken its toll and I'm unsure how long I can wait. Fingers crossed that they'll update the current line on Monday!
The current laptop series sold are all better than mine, but I'd prefer not to spend 3k on a new laptop just to see the skylake model a month later or so.

Jeez....Honestly, who here bought their first Mac based upon its performance?

Not many of you I bet. Rather, it was due to usability, integration, aesthetic and productivity.

The way some carry on and even shift to Windows systems because the cpu and gpu generation is not has high as the competition, even though the MacBook Pro is a very excellent performing system that is a joy to use....well, maybe they have lost sight of the picture.
So much this. I just dipped back into my Boot Camp partition for the first time in a year and came away with a headache. Apple's lacklustre trackpad driver doesn't help, but damn, why do windows smear when I drag them? Is that because Windows doesn't use triple-buffering? And the text rendering is ugly as sin. And keyboard shortcuts for copy/paste don't work in the CLI window. But, it was the literal two hours to perform all the missed updates that really chafed, on top of the three hours I spent compiling a list of updates to avoid or uninstall because they include intrusive Windows 10 nagware. I've vowed to avoid it for another year if I can…
And this is the thing: Windows 10 sends heaps of data back to Microsoft using hard-coded IPs. There're many threads in which people discuss how to shut this down, without success.

TL;DR: OS X is the only _desktop_ OS worth a damn. Linux is the only genuine competitor, which is doubtless why Apple doesn't offer closed-source drivers for it, pretty much guaranteeing users a massive headache and a below par experience.

Definitely... I saw it in person and it looks quite amazing.. but I hate the hinge.. it ruins a great piece of hardware with that massive gap....
and I'm waiting for a miracle from Apple :p

Guys, general question here while we wait. Any of you has experience with returns and refunds with Apple? Do they really give you back the money if you don't want the product?

If they only update the Macbook to skylake... I'm thinking about buying a rMB 12 to replace my 8 years old laptop. I do cad and 3D on it, and it's fine except for rendering which I do on a desktop workstation. Since the actual rMB is more powerfull in CPU and GPU than my laptop, the Skylake would be even better! It should be fine, except for the passive cooling ... if it doesn't work well and throttles and get a even worse performance than my actual 8 years old I would like know if i can return it and get my money back, will Apple allow me to do that?

Sadly they don't sell the SB on my country :(

You need to check with the retailer. You are obviously not in the US but don't mention where you live. Just go to your local apple site and check their return policy. I'm in Canada and just bought and returned a MBA. I kept all the materials and there was no restocking fee. The retailer provided a 14 day return policy.

Of course Apple will allow you to return it. They have one of the most flexible return policies. It's probably like 14 days or 30 days. But I know its not set and stone, as long as you don't break the computer Apple is fantastic when it comes to returns

Personally my experience:
1. Returned an unopened iPhone 6 Plus - no issues and very easy.

From people I know and trust:
1. Returned opened, used, and wiped rMBP within 14 days - easy no questions asked.
2. Swapped iPad (opened and used) from 32gig to 64gig model within 14 days - easy no questions asked.
3. Swapped various cases within 14 days.

From various people I know:
1. Within 14 days has never been an issue.

EDIT: I'm in Australia.

Thanks guys, that's awesome. Hopefully they'll release also Skylake rMBP on monday but it's good to have an alternative.

The funny thing is that the same guy who helped developed Final Cut Pro 7, is the same guy who developed Final Cut Pro X. FCPX would've been great if they added the same yet better features like it was offered of its predecessor. However, this didn't happen and Apple was targeting novice editors which is funny since they already have iMovie.

FCPX has been given a new nickname called "iMovie Pro".

Interesting. Really don't know what they were thinking, but judging by the way they pulled FCP7 off the shelf and then hurriedly put it back up, they quickly realized that they screwed something up.

Are they still adding features to FCPX to try and bring it up the same level of professional features that FCP7 had or are they happy to stay in ProSumer land?
Is everyone jumping ship because it just doesn't do what they need it to do anymore or because they've lost faith in Apple commitment to professional needs?

The Logic guys created Garage Band which in many ways was a dumbed down version of Logic, but in many ways not. Then they went in the opposite direction and used many of the aesthetic, library and workflow approaches from Garage Band and incorporated them into into Logic X.
Logic X did regress many of things that they got right in Logic 9, I'd guess in pursuit of making the program leaner. However, they've been slowly adding many of them back. Shaded loops as an example.

Os x did factor in, but not very much. Because at the time I would have had no issue getting a pc laptop and hackintoshing it

Cool.

I totally agree. That was a first generation device and it was still very impressive. Next years model will be refined (maybe less gap, bettery tablet battery life etc.) and with pascal in there I honestly salivate a little. Arguably entering the gaming laptop scene with pascal.
(Also the 10-13hr battery life is just insane for a dGPU)

I bought my first mac because of performance. It had better cpu and GPU specs at a lower price than any pc laptop available on the market.

When? Because my first Mac was 6 years ago (a 2010 13" MBP) and it was clearly outdated by that time, still with a C2D when the competence and the other Mac lines were already using Sandy Bridge i5/i7s. Ok, we are not talking about 15 years ago, but 6 years is not neglible.

I don't know if it's that "oh, in that old times it was much better than now" memories, but listening other people who have been Mac users since many years ago, Apple hasn't been never that perfect, but far from that.

For those looking for a glimmer of hope, there might be some after all: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/03/intels-high-end-quad-core-nuc-ships-in-may-for-650/

According to that Arstechnica article (published on Mar 16th), Intel is ready to start shipping the IrisPro 580 powered NUC (Core i7-6770HQ) in May. Pre-orders start in April with Newegg.

While Newegg is a large retailer, they definitely won't be selling IrisPro powered chips in the volume that Apple will be with MBP 15"s. It seems very likely then that Apple will announce refreshed MBPs on Monday with shipping dates shortly after.

No, Timmy will see this thread and decide not to announce it

This is my prediction as well. Hope we're right.

if apple pull a 'one more thing' off without a single leak, I'll be damned.
Is the Mac Pro release the only time they've done that? Since its US built?
Last year the only info we had of a MacBook Pro update was 3 days before the event when shipping times slipped. The article still questioned if we would still see MacBook Pros at the March event

Keep in mind Mark Gurman knows what Apple wants Mark Gurman to know, don't get it twisted lolzz;)

Hello guys.
I'm drunk.
Just one day left.
Love ya all.
Bye.

+1

A year later, I want to say like early 2011 MBP, they moved to i7 and just upgraded the dGPU to AMD 6xxx series or something like that. I got a 15" MBP with a 1050p screen and the higher end dGPU.

Then again in 2013 the haswell update to MBP. I got the 13" MBP, and still have this machine. I remember this one more since it was more recent. The only computer at the time that could compete with the specs was an ASUS machine, I really liked the ASUS machine, it was also thinner than the MBP which I liked a lot. But the Asus was a couple hundred more expensive. So the mac being cheaper and having OS X won me over.... A year later I ended up buying the broadwell upgrade to the series the year after, also a great computer.

I just looked it up, you must have got your computer before April in 2010. Because April 2010, they moved too i5/i7 processors. And that was the reason I registered for this forum 6 years ago, for the "waiting for Arrandale MBP thread"

1) It's off the shelf now and it's been declared EOL which is very sad because it was both easy yet professional to use.

2a) Hmm, yes and no. They're adding features but you have to update your OSX in order to get the latest updates which I think is unfair, unjust, and a pain in the ass especially FCPXs system requirements hasn't changed since it debuted: Intel Core2Duo or faster CPU, 256MB VRAM, and 4GB RAM. Basically, 2008 laptop computer specs. In my opinion, Apple is happy in "ProSumer land" as they discontinued the best laptop editors loved...the Late 2011 1200p Antiglare 17" Macbook Pro is evident of that even though the AMD 6770 dGPU scared them but they still used it because it had 3 USB ports.

Apple had a great thing going but when they released X, they shot FCP7 and let it bleed slowly until it died from internal bleeding. There was nothing wrong with FCP7 except the fact it was based on 32-bit architecture and you had to convert to ProRes every single time, otherwise it wouldn't be efficient. Although most cinema cameras already had ProRes as a preset so it didn't matter. 1080p which FCP7 can only accept, is now considered outdated since Premiere Pro CC can work with 6K RAW files and GoneGirl is proof of that.

2b) Interesting question. Only two major movies were edited in FCPX: Focus and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. However that's comparing to over 1000 movies that were edited in Avid and few in Adobe Premiere Pro...for now. When the editors first heard of Final Cut Pro X, they immediately switched back to Avid and Avid was back in the game. However, this opened a door for Adobe with the help of legendary editor Walter Murch when they (Adobe) were developing CS6. Walter Murch used Final Cut Pro 7 and Avid Media Composer before so he was familiar with how it should feel.

The main reason that FCPX was developed was to use tapeless deliveries which is funny because modern professional NLEs including freeware ones use tapeless deliveries but Avid, Adobe, and Sony both use D/A (digital/analog) capturing. Kodak film is still used in the "Big 6" studios: Paramount, Warner Bros, Universal, 20th Century FOX, Walt Disney, and Sony Pictures.

I think editors have mixed feelings about Final Cut Pro X, but most of them would agree it's a disaster. Avid editors would agree that Avid is clunky and there's still a long waiting list for feature requests, but it soars in big productions. Premiere Pro is getting noticed in both shortfilms and 2.5 hr Hollywood films (however, Avid can do both short and long form media based projects just fine). Premiere Pro is what Final Cut Pro 8 would've if it had survived. The professional group are still pissed that Adobe dropped the perpetual license (Buy It Now price) and only offering subscription based services. If you don't use the Creative Cloud for a long period of time after 30 days or you missed a payment 30 days later, it acted like a LoJack until you pay.

The majority of editors have lost faith with Apple because it no longer caters to the professional market like they used to which helped Apple's popularity. There's still a small market for FCPX but not much to shift Apple into the professional market once again. However one can say that Apple's popularity had nothing to do with professionalism but had to do with the fact people loved the brand itself plus the fact as you guessed it...usability, integration, aesthetic and the new Productivity 2.0 or should I say Productivity 3.0.

If Final Cut Pro 8 survived and if Final Cut Pro 9 was in development, it would've been a hybrid of both Avid and Adobe by now. However, that would be speculation since editors would have different sides of the story of the coulda, woulda, and shoulda.

I'm sorry if this was a super long explanation but I tried my best not to leave anything out. My opinion was based upon other editors I work with and it was modified using my own thinking...

Monday prediction: Apple Watch Bands and new iPads.

One More Thing announcement: Apple Macintosh division sold off to Dell, Dell refreshes current SKUs to "Mid 2016" versions without changing specs, price increase to 2x MSRP, $15 dollar starbucks gc included with every Mac purchase.

Half kidding. Sticking to my "Haswell for Skylake" theory.

This is actually the most plausible thing, event or no event LOL.
